  1. Who’s all going? We have 30 rooms reserved so far most of which will have two collectors in them. There are 25 exhibitor tables reserved. If you missed the cutoff date for a room reservation give me a call, I might be able to help you out still. Don't forget there is a ringer tournament for adults being held on Friday night - trophies for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will be awarded! I'm really looking forward to catching up with old friends and meeting some new ones!
  2. lol... sorry - forgot to post the size. It is 13/16 at the widest point.
  3. I'd have to measure it again when I get home but I think it is either 13/16 or 7/8 - can't remember for sure... lol
  4. Mike - I have an extra box that I'd trade you
  5. Do you know if Peltier ever bought/resold CA's when times were tough (to supplement low production runs of their own marbles)? I am especially curious about the early years. I know MK bought/resold Pelts at one point so I didn't know if the practice could have also taken place at Peltier? Has anyone ever heard anything like this?
  6. I believe the NY address was 225 Fourth Avenue - please let me know if you find otherwise. Thanks again, Mike!
  7. I was hoping you would reply, Mike! Thanks very much for the information! Do you happen to know if the Ottawa location was located at the Peltier factory?
  8. Does anyone have information on the M. Gropper & Sons, Inc. Ottawa, IL location? I guess I wouldn’t pass up any good info on the New York, NY location either. Was the Ottawa location close or maybe even co-located at the Peltier Glass factory? Is it safe to assume that the New York, NY location was the first and/or primary distribution location?
  9. I agree with Galen's thoughts in that a transitional is a marble that was hand gathered and made spherical using a machine. This process was in "transition" or in between making marbles solely by hand and making them with a fully automated machine that included a feeding system. My opinion is that the type of cutoff should no longer mandate whether we consider a marble to be a transitional or not - I think the only real requirement is that it must be hand gathered and finished via a machine. Thoughts? Changing the nomenclature amongst a diverse group of collectors is never easy especially when a thought or term has been gospel for so long. I have seen Galen try to repeatedly educate folks on why the Miller machine had nothing to do with the pattern on early Peltier marbles but they still get called "Millers", including by myself. I know that the machine had nothing to do with the pattern, but when let's face it - when someone says "Miller" you know exactly what it means. Great discussion topic by the way and I'm glad to see that it stayed peaceful This board seems to be getting a bit more active as of late and as long as we can keep an open forum like this discussion was I believe it will attract even more folks to the table, or.... keyboard.
  10. An excerpt from "Grandma, You Did What?" A Memoir By Carol J. Almson We decided to cross the overgrown bottom of the canal and sneak up on Peltier’s Marble Factory. If we got though the fence, we could scurry around Peltier’s lot and find about a gazillion marbles. From the outside the building was creepy, with missing red bricks, some windows covered in wire mesh, and others broken out. The roof was gone in some places. If Mr. Peltier showed up, we’d have to escape, but it’d be okay ‘cause he was from France and didn’t know English. Anyway, we filled our jeans’ pockets with the most beautiful marbles I had ever seen and just sauntered away. Easy. Later that day we go the idea to go back to the canal. We’d never been there at dusk before. A freight train was parked near the marble factory. As we approached the first car, we could see it was filled almost to the top with pure white silica sand. That’s why Ottawa had two glass factories. Silica sand is everywhere!
  11. Sweet box! Nice and bright colors.
  12. Wow! What a beauty! Great photos, too!
  13. Jeff has some of the rarest handmades that I have ever seen! Welcome Jeff!
  14. Hey there Gnome! Apologies for the delayed response... Yes, I am primarily a Pelt guy. I'm always up for ID's - I will warn you that I am not terribly strong on my WV swirl ID's. Feel free to run them buy me if you like. E-mail is probably easiest as I generally carry it on my hip. [email protected]
  15. Please let me know if those two groups are for sale.... Thank you!
  16. I don't know about the red mesh bag as I have not seen one of those before... Peltier did make a poly bag with a blue label that read "Marine Crystals". I'll attach a photo for reference.
  17. Don't blame ya, Clyde! I knew it would be a slim chance - but I had to ask
  18. There must be something to be said that you can find so many of the other NLR's (i.e. Christmas Trees, K&M's, Supermen, etc.) in the 3/4'' plus size but not many (if any) of the two color versions. In the 50 ct. and 100 ct. boxes - there were almost always a row of Zebra's (black and/or red) so I don't know why the yellow, red and orange base glass would have been any less desirable. I'm sure the Peltier folks had it down to a science but if it were me, I'd prefer the colored base glass more than the white base glass. Maybe (and very likely) it all came down to profit margins.
