Need Id Of An Antique Marble
stacyw replied to mark in Ft. Myers's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
FWIW, I think Alan's statement is a bit too broad. Steph is 100% on the right track by searching for primary source such as advertising, including prices, from this time period. Making a generalization about "most American children" over a period of 50 years does not take into account how very diverse were the circumstances of people in different geographic areas or how drastically things changed during that period. The items that might have been plentiful and inexpensive in a populated port city like Philadelphia or Boston, may have also been rare and dear in a small Midwestern town. And finding few glass marbles in residential excavations may also be because, sometimes, beautiful German glass marbles were prized possessions and were treated as keepsakes long after their owners stopped playing with them. The nineteenth century Mom may have tossed Junior's clay commies in the rubbish pile when he grew up , but even a beat-up 4-panelled onion skin would have been pretty enough to put in a jar.- 15 replies

pretty mk's???????

Zaboo - would that be like the one in Road Dog's avatar?

Understood. But I still think it's good to know what folks consider HTF if only because an inexperienced collector, such as I, might have something that someone else is searching for to complete a row or collection.

One Share Of Jabo Marbles Busting Into Spring Run 3/4"

He gets grumpy in the off-season. -
Bravo Roger - thoughtful response and great illustrations.

Great thread - keep it going. It's very educational for those of us with less experience to see photos of the HTF ones. I hadn't pulled out the Akro box in a while - forgot how much I like them.

The British " beans and tomato" for breakfast thing is a bit weird at first, but after you are there a few days, you realize that you had better develop a taste for it because it's the best meal you will get all day. And it's not bad when you get used to it. And Zaboo that's cool that Japanese cats are different! I remember that on a visit to Russia ( 30+years ago) the cats looked different there too - longer ears.

Awww, he's a sweetie! Norwegians and Maine Coons are such mushes. We have one now who sheds his whole coat in the Spring too. He does not even look like the same cat before and after. Thanks for the cute pictures.

Love the cat and salmon pic. And I hope he got some - the poor kitty looks like he could use a good meal.

Morphy Auctions Green Glass Guinea
stacyw replied to wediscount2's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Just wondering - does anyone have images of other green-based guineas that they could post? It would be interesting to see how the marble in question compares. No matter which maker this marble was from, it certainly has promoted an interesting discuassion. -
Black olives on the tuna sub makes perfect sense to me - Salad nicoise on a bun! And provolone is a must on any sub in my book. As for the Eggs Benedict -yum. On any trip to a diner, morning, noon or night, that's what I am most likely to order.

You know, I had been wondering about this since you posted the pic. Raisins didn't sound appetizing and peppercorns would be too spicy and then today while driving I was thinking - black olives! Yes, that would work. And then I saw your answer .

No sale here either. -
Ann, those eggs are so cute. Might have to make some this weekend. What are the eyes made from?

Since I share with my best friend a fondness for both beer and "Larry the Cable Guy", I will be stalking Dollar Tree to find this for his next year's Christmas Stocking. I'm betting that shelf life of this product is long enough to make that feasible!

Darn it Steph - Thanks to you I've been humming that Kangaroo song for 2 days!

Collectors...ethics..and The Buy It Now Offer
stacyw replied to 3oranges's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
I respectfully disagree that the unsolicited "buy it now" is the same ethical category as a flea market. Each EBay seller has the option to place a legitimate "buy it now" option on their auction. If they don't, it is an open auction and all potential buyers should have the same chance to bid within the framework of the rules. Accepting an unsolicted offer before the auction has run it's course is like rewarding the guy with the most chutzpah and penalizing those who follow the rules. JMHO -
Collectors...ethics..and The Buy It Now Offer
stacyw replied to 3oranges's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
I too hate those offers from folks who want me to end auctions early. If I had a "buy-it-now" price, I would have listed it. And often the person DOESN'T bid after I explain politely that I don't end auctions early and that if the item doesn't sell I may entertain their offer. It's as if these people resent playing by the rules and if they can't cheat, they don't want to participate. -
Great description of "our" pizza technique! What's funny is that we do it, but we don't know we do it until someone points it out.

Don't know what the mib is ( although it does look like "black eyed pea" colors), but that's one handsome cat!
