  1. Just a thought - has anyone considered that they might be some type of encaustic(pigment, wax, resin mix)? If they are, subjecting one to a strong heat source would tell.
  2. VERY funny..and the irony of the item he's selling vs. the description is not lost on me but there's enough truth in what he says to make it just a little bit sad too. In my book the woodchucks are still funnier. Not only does the commercial make me laugh, but every time I see BigJohn's signature quote, I crack up all over again.
  3. Wow, nice display Jeeperman. I especially like the "marble study" area you have there. I hope many others will add to this thread. Big fun to see the collections in their "natural habitat"! Stacy
  4. What a beautiful collection of slags - thanks Jeeperman!
  5. Here are a few of my more unusual cats.
  6. Here are some of my favorite drizzles. Maybe there is even a transitional in there? Galen?
  7. Better be careful Steph, Griff might want to borrow that dress!

    How Many Colors?

Here's one I got recently. Don't know if it's old or new, foreign or domestic, but it's colorful. 1 inch and this one from my family group. My guess is Master but most in that group were Akro so.... 11/16"
  9. How about these 3 from my older family marbles: 31/32" 15/16" and 1 inch
  10. This arrived today... 21/32 of black adventurine with some wild eyelashes (or horsehairs or cricket legs). It makes a nice picture posed with it's little 17/32 brother, which was in my "family marbles" box. Too bad the rainbow sparkles don't photograph too well.
  11. Maybe - years from now - I'll be able to tell the difference
  12. Thanks Galen. I find the historical aspect of marble construction and design very intriguing. Here's a shot of some handgathereds(?)in my collection - and as usual all comments and/or corrections are welcome.
  13. Galen, Do the German handgathers date from any particular time period? And are there any resources you can recommend for the study of handgathered marbles? Thanks.
  14. Thanks for the encouragement. SO, these are "fancy tigereyes".. I was just calling 'em my favorite marbles! Might have to look for more of these as well.
  15. So now my mission is to find 20 more of these... You guys are a bad influence
  16. Yummy! Another newbie question...Is a 25 count case something that collectors strive for or is it a vintage Vitro container of some sort?
  17. Thanks Chuck for that fantastic post - a great reference. After looking at that, I can see that mine doesn't qualify. The ones you and Jeeperman posted look more like "brains" and seem to have transparent bases. Here's a question...Were these in any way designated by Alley as a specific type or construction or is this a later collectors' differentiation?
  18. Please don't laugh if I'm completly off the mark here, but does this qualify? It's 29/32" and it was from my older ones. excuse the lint - I just wiped it off with a tissue and took a quick pic.
  19. Can you post or point me to a view of a calligraphy Alley? Thanks.
  20. These 3 are favorites of mine and I think they would qualify.Thjey have a transparent base with lovely milky white and turquoise threads in it. Am I correct in identifying them as Vitro? And can someone tell me if there is a name for them? Thanks, Stacy
  21. Holy Toledo! I think I'm getting a case of the vapors. This should go down in history as one of the best threads ever. Stacy
  22. Pull up this page and it looks like the two avatars are watching the "singer" - perhaps with different motives Happy Birthday Stacy
  23. WOW! This one is gorgeous. Also, a major deja vu - when I was a kid, I had a souvenier "glass"(really lucite) paperweight from Florida with a pink flamingo inside that used to fascinate me - never thought about it nearly 50 years until I saw this marble. It was exactly those colors. thanks for the memories, Stacy
  24. Late to this party, but just today my Dad dropped off the box of marbles that I remember admiring as a child. They are all pre-1945, and there are MANY Akros. I just picked out a few obvious ones for the quick photo. The remarkable thing is the condition. Most of them are MINT. I have been drooling over them all day. Stacy
