Thanks everyone. Yes there are a couple cold rolls. I think Al might be seeing something I didn't see at first. It might just well be a Master. And I thought I knew Sunbursts pretty well. I'll show it to Willie since Sunbursts are his absolute favorites. Here's a better backlit shot.

Where have you been, you pelthead you? Missed you a bunch! Alas, I'm sure all those fires have kept you very busy lately. ~Roger

Until I can set up a much needed shooting gallery, hopefully this will do to help. Pelt on the left, Kokomo on the right, and I can sort of see a little muddy on one side of the middle (suspect) if this is a Pelt. If Peltier, it might be a bifurcated example. I added another pic also.

Hello, I just got in from another antiques show. So sorry for the delay. The reason I am going with Vitro is the pastel shades being very similar to the Vitro Easter Egg or Parakeet colors. Let me get back to you on this one as I am working on my quarterly taxes (due today!).

I'm in awe! JEEZ! Those colors are really talking to each other!

Cac's For My Collection

Cars vs marbles = apples vs oranges. 'Makes' for a great but silly argument. Good thing we are all family around here, right? It's all good, right? Rich, you are an artist. Galen collects your art. Sometimes it is better to just sell your art without a title. It is never a good idea to leave a work unsigned, these days, for obvious reasons. The CAC workers didn't have that choice, and why would they? But you are not even selling your wares, supposedly, so why all this? You always ask if we like any of your work, and most reply yes, including myself, of course. Please tell me how long it might take you to make the near-perfect mib, by torch. The CAC workers each rolled out well over ten times their weight in little mibs every day. They were not exactly artisans as such, like yourself, but factory workers punching a clock. Your shooter mib = +/-50 bucks. (ca. 2013) Real shooter CAC = +/- average of 500 bucks (ca. 1928) The ten fold aspect makes for a good argument IMO. If the 'bad' sellers on the bay can make ten times their money, well duh! I think that is what this is all about. So why all the back and forth? It takes two baby, it takes two baby, just me and you. (Remember that song?) -

The next time someone asks me how far marbles go back, I might have a newly composed answer for them. Neanderthal children might have had fun playing with these orbs if there were ever such a thing as playtime, that is. "Hammerstones date to the Oldowan stone tool industry in Africa, approximately 1.9 million years ago and they were probably in use much longer than that. In fact, these tools have been used by several different species of humans. The longest period of time they were in use by an extinct human was by Homo erectus who used them for approximately 1.2 million years. Homo habilis, Homo erectus and Neanderthals have used hammerstones hundreds of thousands of years longer than modern humans have been using them. Even otters and chimpanzees use stones to break open shells and nuts." -

Not necessarily. Flint doesn't require such a hard stone, a simple antler horn will do better. Might have another purpose. You can't smash these with a hammer Galen, you'll break the hammer, trust me. I don't know why you can't see that this is stone in my pictures. Sorry. -

Wow! I think I may have stumbled onto a site with similar stones. Looks like they think they were used for knapping flints. Interesting. View on black "A selection from the 18 hammer stones found at Cliffs End. They were found with other objects which date them to the Late Bronze Age (30-50mm). Most show signs of wear, predominately from knapping flint." Cool, huh? -
Super mib!! I'm seeing a blend of EOD (end of day) with swirls and mica. What an unusual beauty!! Not a Joseph, as the end of day (speckles) ruin that chance imo.

Still puzzled about these three stones. I'll try a rock/minerals-forum and get back to everyone. Did you ever find that old link Danny? Thanks again. -

Don't listen to him Rich, CAC glass is still CAC glass no matter how you add it up. Those beauties are the best I've seen out of you yet, and I wouldn't mind owning one that is well over an inch and very busy with four or five colors for my own collection. Bravo!! -

In my mind the most compelling thing about these two matched sizes is the weight difference which is less than a gram. Stunning accuracy for that time period, if in fact these are really ancient, which is why I am thinking they were used as counter-balances for some kind of weighing. Do they roll well? Yes they do! Even with those wide flat areas, once you get them rolling, watch out!
