  1. Your post isn't the one I was referring to. It's Steve's. My head is spinning. You should see it...it's really cool
  2. We, who once upon a time, dabbled a bit in calculus, find it infinitely easier to understand than your post.
  3. Uh oh...now we're getting into calculus... ...I think... ...it's been a long time...
  4. Here are the ridiculous answers I come up with. All answers are rounded to the fourth decimal. Volume of a 1/2" marble = .0654" Volume of a 5/8" marble = .1278" Volume of a 3/4" marble = .2208" Volume of a 1" marble = .5233" My guess is it takes roughly (8) 1/2" marbles to equal the volume of a 1" marble. (Steph is the resident mathematician. She'll give you the real answers...)
  5. A new or repaired tank, and maybe new (or repaired, heh heh) ownership in Jabo. You know, somebody who's actually interested in making marbles instead of just making money... I'm not made of money... Hey! Looks like maybe I'm not so ignorant after all
  6. Jabo He shows only one view of this marble, tho there are 3 pics...
  7. OK, so dirty up the rollers a little, and one item on my agenda will be taken care of. If I didn't think the new Jabos had potential, I wouldn't have bothered with this (dumbass) thread. They keep getting better all the time. I'm just trying to push it along a little... And I just wondered why there aren't any more 1" ones, when there used to be. Wasn't necessarily saying they HAD to make them 1" before I would consider buying them.
  8. I've been told that the 1" machine needs repairs...
  9. One more question: Jabo used to make 1" marbles. Why can't they do that now? Or can they? And if they can, why DON'T they?
  10. This marble got an extra dose of all the right qualities. Whatever caused the unusual size, also caused the superior pattern, etc, I would guess...
  11. Attached is my one and only private-run Jabo. It is a Foxfire error marble that measures a little over 13/16". It has all kinds of little as-made imperfections in the glass that vintage marbles often have: little dimples, short creases, tiny pits (but no "damage"). The surface has kind of an orange-peel texture. I LOVE IT! So much better than the few new Jabos I've had in hand, with their ultra-smooth surfaces. This one has just a smattering of fine particles of aventurine here and there...enough to make it interesting, but not overpowering. And there's NO WHITE, not even one little spot of it. The pattern is outrageous, and ALL OVER THE MARBLE! No dull areas at all. And the color combination fits so well together, like fall leaves. Not too many colors, and they blend into each other like an oil painting. IT IS ABSOLUTELY PERFECT!!! So, my question is this: Whatever "error" caused this marble to happen, why can't someone figure out how to duplicate that "error" at will? That's the kind of errors we need lots more of!
  12. Gorgeous! Better than a real Guinea. Too bad it's cracked.
  13. I learned a new word today: "bromides". Don't think I've ever heard that one before in all my born days.
  14. Yes, and the two CACs identified among the Jabos.
  15. JOKER III 2010 REDUX by David Chamberlain ยป Mon Mar 08, 2010 9:36 am Gee, I didn't think this self-same thread had digressed so far that it was irretrievably lost. Anyway, I wanted to hop back in and kick some ass! Then it got wussy-locked! What a shame when enthusiasm, joy and respect for a significant marble accomplishment is met with contempt, ridicule and incomprehension. And then for it to be clothed in the same old trite bromides.....well, it almost puts one to thinking there's no hope for some people in this hobby. It's as if they've reached a stasis* (not to be confused with status) and are mired in stultification. It's a pain in the butt I have to point this out repeatedly. *stagnation Re. the possibility of Dave McCullough venturing into the realm of corkscrews, patches and so forth.....Huh? This guy is a swirl expert; that's what drives him to better himself. SWIRL MARBLES! The cool thing about this batch of 57 Joker III marbles I got that really gets me going is that Dave has put his own patented mark on a marble characteristic that we all love seeing when any marble company comes even close to accomplishing it. And he has done it so successfully that even in the opaque example that don't necessarily scream FLAME! you can detect incipient sparks that sear the surface of the marble in previously unheard of numbers and combinations of colors. Like, what more could you ask for? Ron told me that he'd mentioned to Dave that some of his planned color combinations seemed questionable. Turned out that he was proven wrong! These are pastel wonders. I've got one here that has Dark blue, Powder Blue, Brown, Yellow, Aqua, Green, Lavender and White and it is perfect. Another with Purple, Lavender, Green, Orange, Yellow, Oxblood and White similarly perfect. And then one with Pink, Purple, Green and Yellow...all the color necessary for an outstanding marble. How anyone could have anything but praise for these marbles is beyond me.The hackneyed response that some poor newbie is going to bite the dust over these does not hold water. Buy what you like, buy condition and do not be motivated by greed. David Chamberlain Last edited by David Chamberlain on Mon Mar 08, 2010 9:47 am, edited 1 time in total.
  16. It would be much easier to identify the CACs with the marbles in hand, more views of the marbles, and close up pictures of each one. I'm not all that familiar with CACs, but I would guess that the topmost marble is one. Kevin has also banned Steph on his board. Her last post was her advice to Kevin to "take a flashlight" to his first marble show. Interestingly, Kevin apparently invited Lou to join his board, even though it is Lou, not Steph or Sue, who disciplined him on this board by requiring that his posts be approved before being posted. Kevin, I wouldn't've (there I go again) thought you to be a woman-beater... Oh wait...Steph, at least, probably had it coming, because we all know what an irrational troublemaker she is... hmmm...wonder if I'm banned now too...
  17. It's ok to collect for value. Value is probably always at least a factor, even for those who collect for beauty. But why pretend to have some noble or altruistic motive when your real concern is your collection being devalued?
  18. I don't know how a Vacor Serpent could fool anybody. Some of them are nice, but not very many look much like a Peltier Superman. This thread was allowed to remain positive for a grand total of 51 minutes before it got slammed. It's so stupid. Somebody being "worried" that newbies might get fooled over someone else's efforts to make a high-quality marble. Wonder what the real concern is...Even if Jabo's INTENTION was to make marbles that look exactly like CACs or Peltiers, I would still say more power to them, as long as they didn't try to pass them off as being what they are not. Then let the buyers decide what they are worth. And if other people try to pass them off as being what they are not, well, that's not Jabo's problem. In no way am I condoning dishonesty. I guess I never could understand "intrinsic worth" as it applies to marbles (and probably lots of other things too). In fact, the whole idea of collecting (anything) seems rather silly to me. Maybe someday I'll get over it.
  19. No offense taken! I was just going by what I see on eBay, and there aren't many Ravenswoods of any size listed, that I've seen.
  20. Hey! I was just trying to make small talk.
  21. That blue/brown shooter in post #2 does look Ravenswood to me. That is what I would have guessed it as being. Maybe most of the shooters are in collections, and maybe there never were very many to begin with. There aren't all that many of the smaller Ravenswoods, compared to other makers, seems like, anyway. And of the few that I have (ten total), four are noticeably out of round. So, maybe they decided not to make many shooters for that reason also.
  22. Wonder if she's buying them from this guy, using another user id. He doesn't even bother to change his photo from week to week. Doesn't get much for them either. He's been selling them two a week for quite awhile now... Woodstocks
  23. Time to change the seller id...let's see how this Jabo does, now that she officially sells "vintage" marbles... Another Jabo Woodstock Oops, forgot about not posting eBay links. Oh well, nobody's going to be able to afford this one anyway...
  24. Ha ha ha!! Good story, Marie. We lived on a farm until I was seven. One day, my younger brother and I went into the hen house to harass the chickens (but not the rooster cuz it was too big and mean), and before we left, we locked some of them up in the roost. It was a very hot, muggy day, and a couple of them almost died from heat exhaustion. Luckily, someone freed them in time. That evening, the skies grew dark and a violent wind came up. We all went down in the basement, fearing for our lives, while a tornado did some minor damage to our house. My mother said it was because God was angry at me and my brother for what we did. For a long time I believed that locking up chickens in the roost was what caused tornadoes. ..... ....really, I did...
