bumblebee
From The Ottawa Free Trader, Dec. 15, 1855. I had not seen this article before. It has interesting details on the dyeing processes. There isn't a legible OCR text so I'll try to post images of it here in order.
bumblebee
In a similar vein, this Aug 22, 1863 Lancaster Gazette article quotes the Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine:
Chuck G
Thank you for the (GREAT) information. I kinda had an idea of how coloration of stone was done, collecting Indian artifacts and arrowheads being slightly a different color. Indians used heated stone also, to temper their flint. I know agate and flint are slightly different in hardness. This is wonderful information and all should learn from it. Chuck G---

Berryb
I always understood that the dying process was pretty toxic. But If it could be done in an old crock pot with honey, salt water and maybe substitute vinegar for the acid..... Hmmmmm. I have a friend with lots of agate, I'll talk to him. What's the worst that could happen, maybe your rocks smell like pickles. Bruce

Royal3
Truly fascinating find, Jason. Is there a more remarkable natural substance on the planet than honey?
