Buying marbles back in the day

I'd guess that many retailers got marbles in bulk or stock boxes and sold them out of bins for pennies. Gift boxes were most likely reserved for special occasions, especially in the earlier days. There were probably gumball-like dispensers in the later years too. Many were also probably given away as promotional items or incentives too.

You mean back in the day = when they were originally retailed?

I wasn't around then, but I suspect most of the nicer one's ended up as matched sets in early catalog gift boxes, at a premium.

At the time, a random bulk lot to be delivered to the corner store up the street, makes more sense than the other side of the country.
