Three for ID

Thanks for your time. I have these three I’m struggling to ID. I have an idea of what I “Think” they are but that’s not good enough for me. Any input is appreciated.

First pic I think is Alley due to the large size and the light blue base Marble measures 0.98”inches in diameter

The next one is also shooter size measuring 0.85” inches in diameter. I think it’s Vitro but I can’t rule out Peltier or MK in my mind for some reason.
 

Last one I think is Akro but I can’t commit to it. Measures 0.61” inches in diameter

I am thinking JABO for the first one, a very nice Vitro Blackie for the second, and Akro for the third.

Hmm I hadn’t considered Jabo, could be. Here’s a pic of the first marble with a group of Alley. I was trying to compare but……

Yeah Ric, the second one is a nice marble. The offset of the black/purple band throws me off. Is there any correlation between the size of Vitro Agate Shooters and their age? It just seems to me that most of the older Vitro shooters I’ve come across are similarly sized between 0.75 and 0.85” inches in diameter where the newer ones like tiger eyes I see some almost 1” inch in diameter. It could just be me overthinking things or my sample size being to limited? I appreciate all y’all’s time on this stuff. I really do.

You really have to be careful when looking for big Alleys because JABO made quite a few that are tempting. I think this one may be from a contact run - Mamie's?? And I think if you found a 1" Blackie you'd really have something. I have quite a few big ones but they are all shy of 1". And it wouldn't surprise me that, Blackies, being a bit newer, when glass was more expensive, just never really were produced at 1".

Ok, for the first marble, the blue and yellow swirl shooter measuring 0.98” inches. I did a comparison. Let me know what y’all think here.

Picture 1 (top picture) this is the marble included with a group of Alley Agate marbles.
 

picture 2 shows the same marble with a group of Jabo. 
 

To me, I think Ric is correct on the marble being Jabo. It looks like it fits the marble group in picture 2 (bottom picture)better than the group of Alley Agates in picture 1

So Ric, would you say that Vitro made larger numbers of big shooters (around 1” inch) in their early years? Then later when materials cost increased there was a trending towards a smaller sized shooter marble? Any idea in the timeline here?

That is my general feeling but as far as a time-line, I am not too sure.

Alley for sure, made at Pennsboro location and early at St.Marys location. Good numbers were dug at both locations. 

Vitro Blackie

Vitro made 3/4 - 7/8 - one inch and above all throughout the years at Parkersburg. They even made later Cosmic Rainbows at 1 & 1/8 inch and more.  I have opaque base Vitro at 1 & 1/4 inch.  Vitro had the one and one quarter inch machine from House of Marbles in England on lease for many years. When Vitro closed that machine went back to House of Marbles. Vitro made 7/8 inch All Reds right into the late 1980's.  All the Jabo 3/4 inch investor runs marbles were made on the early(1940) Vitro machine. Sammy Hogue owns that machine now,  I think the one inch machine at Jabo was also a Vitro original. I am not sure where it ended up ? It was hard to run steady good marbles on it. Keeping that much glass and steel hot enough to not get roll marks and out of shape marbles.  This is why most of the Jabo investor runs were 3/4 inch size. Marbles big enough to see all the colors easy. But not so big that the non standard loss would be to much. Maybe much the same with Vitro. But Vitro made big numbers of 7/8 and one inch marbles. The 7/8 inch and one inch size were both made on the one inch machine at Jabo. I think any of the one inch and up Alleys or one inch and up Vitros will only skyrocket in value for the future. People are collecting and hanging onto them tight now days. Any opaque one inch or more multi color Vitro is worth holding onto.  Any 7/8 and one inch Tiger Eyes. old All Reds, Parrots, Whities, Blackies, 3 color Boulders, Cosmics, Wedding Cakes now $200.00 each, Buttermilks, etc. all being grabbed up and prices going up.  Offically a shooter is 3/.4 inch, and above at 7/8 and one inch is a Boulder. Many call above one inch a Toe Breaker.

One inch and 7/8 Jabo and Alleys still fool me every few months.  But each year a little less.

Thanks y’all, I’ll have to go get that Alley out of the Jabo box and put it with my Alley Agates. As for the last marble the Akro, I don’t see many like this one I’m guessing it’s a harder marble to find? Does this one have a name attached to it?

I don't think there is a name associated with it and the more I look at it the more Vitro it looks to me, so I don't know what to think about it, other than that it looks like a veneered marble.

I would call this one a patch and sort it as a Vitro. The way that the black fades into the white steers me that way.

Of course they are always better to ID in hand.

I just call them like I see them.
