Hi

I have inherited some marbles including the prettiest and some unusual onionskins. I thought I'd share as I think I have a couple which are particularly unusual and some which are just the most beautiful works of art in my humble opinion.

Ive had to try and pick up some learning about what they are but i'm up for hearing your views and thoughts.

The first red and white one I believe is an early faceted ground pontil German onionskin cloud (17mm or less than 11/16s). I love the feathering pattern its so pretty.

The second - is a looping onionskin I believe - again early German faceted pontil - the window seems to me to be extraordinary. I have three which I wonder if they are the same cane - all are gorgeous colours. About 11/16s or 18mm)

I'd love to hear what you think folks.

Blimey I'm sad to hear that. I thought I'd understood what they were - I'd never have come to the forum with an opinion on what there were if I'd been given any reason to doubt they were german onionskins. But hey I'm new to the world of marbles so what do I know..

Thanks for sharing your opinion - I appreciate your efforts to let me know your thoughts.

All older German onionskins, except maybe the one might be a few years newer but still a German onions. I can't make out the pontils (ground and faceted or unfinished or even a melted pigtail which usually only occurred on the larger marbles)The Looped is verry rare. The Cloud is yes verry nice also.  I see faceted pontils on the Looped and the cloud indicating early production, i.e. mid 1850's to 1870 or so. All the faceting stopped just after the 1870's to time consuming for the evolving English game board market. After 1870 there were a lot W two unfinished pontils or one ground and one unfinished, though there was still some faceting going on. Verry nice marbles, not easy to come by. I seen them on AAM about a month or so ago also, I believe I commented then also ?? Can't remember ??  That shade of Green was also one of the harder colors to come by.  Nice marbles, good shape too. I believe @Alan  has some knowledge on these also.

Hi Chad

Oh I didnt know the green ones are a good colour - they are my favorites for colour for sure - I  will post more photos re the pontils - all are the same faceted but only at one end. Thank you very much for the info re the likely dating. I'd be very happy to keep them as I really do thing they are works of art but I think others would appreciate having them even more than me! Thanks for replying.

Yes, you're right - I did  request some help around identifying what marbles I had from AAM and it was great that everyone was soo helpful  - yourself and Alan included - its been so interesting to learn more and I feel most fortunate to have them. I'm very grateful .

I've come to this forum to post piccies on the suggestion of a chap that I've been chatting to about them - he thought it would be nice to  show them off as it were. Obviously , I'm hoping to sell them too so it was also suggested that  it would be a good idea to make sure that people know they exist. I'd love to see them go to someone who really would enjoy having them!

I havent sold to the US before but I think I need to in this case.

I've uploaded three more piccies of each of the orange ones to show the faceted pontil better, its hard to show on the last three.

I've uploaded some more piccies of the other two green ones for interest too. Again three of each.

Good pix, & yes I can see the single faceted pontil. The other may be melted as I don't see the usual rough surface left by an unfinished. One thing about the marbles you have there all in mint shape and not going to lose value. You'll have them and until you find the right buyer. Verry nice, look like they were made yesterday, somebody took good care of these, definitely some great marbles. I have some big Germans posted here in several places that look as if they have never been touched also. Germans were the first marbles I began collecting in the early 80's.
