Steph
Very rare box: (click to enlarge) (source) Burt/Bermar's report at LOM of a discussion he had with the buyer: Just talked with Rick about this box. Some avid collectors have been in touch with him, verifying the authenticity of this box, referring to a picture in an Akro brochure, and making offers to buy it. One person who has one contacted Rick and said though there are probably others, this is only the second he has seen. Since I met Rick and Darlene a few years ago, I have come to appreciate their friendship. Actually, I think of all of us marble collectors as friends and am happy when any of us makes a lucky find. Rick and Darlene will have this box with them at the New Philly show.

Steph
Akro Prize Name box with contest coupons. (click to enlarge) (source) Some text from the enclosure introducing the prize names and explaining the contest: . . . In presenting to our juvenile customers this beautiful new line of marbles, we have been at a loss to find a suitable name to describe them, therefore we will put it up to our boy and girl friends to give this new marble a name. . . . Attached you will find ten coupons. Give one to each customer who purchases ten of these marbles. They will fill in his or her name and address with with their suggestions for a name for our new marble, and mail to THE AKRO AGATE COMPANY, CLARKSBURG, W. VA. . . . As soon as possible after the Contest closes, we will have three judges, men of national reputation in marble games, select the most fitting name from all of the suggestions sent us. . . . We now manufacture marbles under the following names: Akro Striped Onyx, Akro Cardinal Red, Akro Moonie, Akro Imperial and Akro Flintie. MR. DEALER Then came the contest rules. There were to be five prizes, ranging from $10 to $100. The deadline for entries was Midnight, May 1, 1930. And winners were to be announced in the June issue of Boys' Life. honeybern
I've been going through my list of old Akro links today. There was one to a thread about opaque sparklers. The thread's gone, but I still have these scans from it, from Baumann's Collecting Antique Marbles, 4th ed. Thought someone might consider them interesting. (as do I but I have my own copy of the book, so this is really for you ) (click to enlarge) Apparently these mibs gained status with Baumann (or his publisher) sometime between the 3rd and 4th eds as in the lessor ed they were simply pictured on the "oxbloods" page (plate 41) although, not so much status, it seems, to bother to note that 1 of these "opaque sparklers" just happened to be transparent. Clear as a baby's clear blue sky (a bit of a bubbly one but clear, nonetheless). "Click" to actually enlarge. "Skuze me, whilst I kiss de sky" - Jimi Hendrix, "Are You Experienced?" An please skuze the inverted scan. (@ Troglodytes and Neanderthals-that means up-side down)
honeybern
A definite Popeye patch, and its brother Cork! These two are from the same Popeye box. One of those pictured above. There also seems to be at least one more "error" in that box. (click to enlarge) "An honingst to goodnisk Popeye Patch??? pedidoll
w0w!!!! did you get them with marbles in or did you have to fill ?
cheese
They have never been apart, the marbles are original to the boxes. Found in the attic of an old general store maybe 30 or so years ago.
Steph
wow wow wow This was a huge and wonderful surprise. What were the strings for?
cheese
I'm not positive, but it looks like on the box there are marks where the string probably was criss crossed and tied to hold the lid on. I didn't find the boxes, they were bought off the person who did find them. I think it was their family's store that had been closed and boarded up for decades, then a lot of cool stuff was found when it was cleaned out in the 1980s or so. cheese
I know, right? If I recall, they also had new old metal pedal cars and lots of other old toys they found. They were selling this stuff at a flea market. These boxes of marbles were the only ones they had. I was a kid at the time, but my mom new how much I loved marbles and even though I didn't have the $60 for them, she did . I am so grateful for that! Steph
That's luscious. A cork, yes? So much diversity exists in Akro corks beyond the standard company names that I know about.
ann
Wow -- is that almost kinda-like a snake, Bill? I think their variety (like that of Pelt Rainbos) is what makes corks dangerous for me . . . Two recent varieties I couldn't resist:
