JABO has a Copperhead too

Bingo! FYI..on the NYSE you stand in "the crowd" at a "post" on "the floor." In the commodities markets in USA, you trade on the "floor" in "the pit."

BINGO!

eBay mechanics are such that if someone bids the reserve, it automatically becomes the high bid and shows. If however, you bid more that the reserve and there are no other bids, the bid that shows is the reserve amount , not the bidder's maximum bid.

Gosh, I am not sure the above is a true statement, but you guys decide. My observation of markets is simple. Buyers bid and sellers offer. If you are neither, then you either leave or stand and watch quietly. The vast majority of the time, guys on the floor say nothing unless they have an ax to grind. In a typical 4 hour trading day, the guys with the deck yell the most, putting orders on the market as they are received. Those who are interested bid or offer and the rest watch. Most members are quiet for 1/2 to 2/3 of any given trading day. So, on most days except during a :"fast market" most folks say little and yet the market is liquid and complete. There is no requirement that everyone bid or offer. The only requirement is that the order be shown to all via "open outcry" so that those with interest can all bid or offer at "open outcry." My conclusion of the auction of that box auction is that it was complete and those with an interest bid. It sure was available to one and all.

Speculation is that Lawrence E and Fisher were friends and that is how it originally got to Vitro. The speculation continues the Fisher liked the box and the idea and tried putting some Vitros in the box....and there it sat until rediscovered at Anacordes.

Congrats on your Panther! This thread just goes to show how important it is to get them in hand.Marbles are tactile.

The box was found in an old Vitro desk when that stuff arrived at Anacordes. It is the box pictured and IDed as Vitro in the Vitro book. It was part of the "big Anacordes buy." It was sold and now Bert is selling it. I do not know if he is the owner or selling it on consignment. It has been said that the box when sold the first time sold for a lot bigger number than $6,300. Some think the value is about $15,000 to 20,000. I have no idea what the value is. If I wanted to know the reserve, I write Bert and ask. The box itself matches the box owned by the Alley family as do some of the marbles.

Morphy's is having an auction on Dec.3. It should be even better than usual because Paul Baumannn's collection is being auctioned that day.

Anyone Game To Take Close Ups Of Their Jabo Tributes?
psia-antique replied to Steph's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
We only had one color of base glass for the Tribute Run. It was Fenton Hobnail white. -
literal is French for broken heart. It is also a town and a lake in Missouri.

It is the game from which Rolley Hole is derived. It can be traced back to about 1840-1850 on the TN/KY border in the Cherokee population. Prior to that it doesn't seemed to be traced. It seems to have either come from the South via the Aztecs or from Europe. It was originally played with stone, now it is played with pool balls. There is a CD with 60+ plus Cherokee words that are their language which are marble terms used while playing. This CD was provided to me by Dennis Sixkiller of the Cherokee Nation. A serious match can take an hour and a half to play. The biggest tourney of which I aware is played annually over Labor Day week end in Oklahoma at the Cherokee Nation. Darren Shell has a Cherokee Yard at his Marina in the Upper Cumberland region and wrote about the game is great book entitled "A Stone's Throw." I played with Darren at his place. I have taught the game to folks around here and near the reservation.

Old Or New , That Is The Question?

Since you say too many have been produced, please tell us how many were produced? How many marbles per run? How many marbles per tank wash? What % broke ? What % have cold roll marks? What % are just plain ugly? What % have gone to children to be played with? Where is the farthest from the US that these marbles have been shipped? How many have been broken when used as the target marbles in games? How many are given by partners and/or JABO to folks for photography or other projects? This list of questions could go on for quite a while! It is impossible to have price gouging on eBay. People bid or don't bid at any price depending on what they are willing to pay. Then when the marble is bought price equilibrium is set until the next similar marble trades. I would like to hear this data of the analysis you are using. Without it, you have left yourself blowing in the breeze.Your argument sounds valid, but it is specious. Attrition rates are actually much higher for JABO since there are so few. Here is a proof. Since inception JABO has made fewer that 80,000,00 marbles. Pelt in big years made 138,000, 000 per year. So if JABO made 3,000,000 experimentals in 1 year and Pelt made 138,000,000 and both companies had 100,000 lost, broken, "slingshotted", cold rolled, etc. then JABO's attrition rate would be significantly higher. Many folks give them to kids and friends. Edna had the marble tree and so it goes. These marbles like the CAC exotics will continue to be collected for one and only one reason....their beauty. If folks think them pretty, they will be bought and collected. If they are unattractive, they won't be collected. Marbles are a hobby, not an investment. If you like any marbles, buy them. If you don't like any marbles, don't buy them. It is that simple. The little hard data that is out there suggests you are wrong. Look at the #1 marble search by company on eBay. How many fee $ are driven through eBay? how many fee $are driven through PayPal? This is a very interesting thread. I hope many contribute with facts.

Beri can make glass in house. She already has the tower for sand. MK used to batch back in the day. BUT,the cost of batching will probably increase the cost of manufacturing of a marble by a factor of about 2 to 3 times (off the top of my head guesstimate) its cost now. My guess is that the real concern will be getting alternate sources and keeping them...either because of payable problems, volume of available glass from those suppliers, or inability to sell mibs competitively against the foreign competition. My guess is that over the short term, both JABO and MK will be OK, but the price structure of marble making just changed for the worse again. This situation will also become of test of wills on the part of the owners of these two companies. They will have to decide to fight and fight hard to survive. I wish Beri and David well in this battle for survival.

"The following year 1993 only one team from America arrived to play; they were team captain Rick Mawhinney, players Ray Jarrell, Travis Cherry, Debra Stanley-Lapic with her two nieces Brenda and Darlene Schwartz. At the end of the main tournament we played an International match of five games for the Fenn Cup (first played for in 1953). The British team was drawn from the club teams and was made up of Colin Gardener, Mark Parsons, Paul Smith, Ian Gardener, Barry and Darren Ray. The result was very close with the Americans winning the first two games and British winning the next two. It was all down to the last game, the Americans won the nose drop, after the first round the score was 13 - 5 to Britain. The second round saw four players killed, two from each team, the score was now 19 - 7 to Britain. The third round saw Britain in the lead 20 – 14, at this point Ray Jearrell from West Virginia made a break of 11 marbles to win the series. Just before they departed their captain produced the ‘World Trophy’ that had been played for the year before saying, “this is the cup we brought with us and this is the cup we intend to take back with us” and in so doing claimed to be ‘World Champions’. As the matches was only an International between Britain and America I thought that this un-sportsman like behaviour was out of order and any contest for the trophy should have been between more than just two countries, as in 1992. As far as I know this cup has never been contested for since." Does anyone know where the referenced trophy is? Has it been used since? Can it be used again? The 92 team and their results are well documented in " A Stone" Throw" by Darren Shell including a picture of Junior B Strong and the queen posing together with their shooters. Any tale I have heard from Tinsley Green has been outstanding. Could the leadership/membership of this board do anything so that we can send a US Team annually?
