  1. It reminded me of these - attributed to Champion, I think, but not uv-reactive.
  2. Be careful with tape. If you want to repair it, archival paper tabs and paper glue would probably be better. George's box repair articles would be a good read, for sure.
  3. The Vaseline glass with red striping is unusual. It'd be a sweet Peltier Sunset. The bubbles are right but I think that's a fold and not a seam - and uranium glass? It also seems to have some furnace debris. Can't blame Bill for a little wistful thinking though, he loves those oddball Pelts. It could be some kind of Euro swirl, I guess. I would like to see it in hand. Please let me know if you want to part with it - it's a pretty one.
  4. Phantom Conquerors usually have more of the white filaments in and under the clear base glass, though.
  5. I wish I had one. It's a pretty marble and an unusual combination of glass and colors. If I had seen any numbers of these, I would likely remember it, and I don't so . . . ? The only similar glass/color combo I can think of, and it's really not that similar to production examples, would be in an Akro Cherry Ade (I wonder if there are dug examples). Hopefully, someone else will recognize it.

I definitely need to pay more attention to slags.
  7. They can be a lot tougher to identify than other marbles, and the vast majority are common types, which most collectors aren't all that interested in (these are also the ones that are toughest to distinguish one maker from another). But some people that collect swirls can identify the more interesting ones (and a lot that aren't all that interesting) with pretty high accuracy. And serious swirl collectors would rather not offer an ID (or will hedge a lot), rather than misidentifying one. Pick out some of the more interesting ones and post pics if you want some help.
  8. . . . but it's in just the right place. Nice marble! Vitro did make some nice turquoises - a couple of favorites.
  9. I'll go with the Hillbilly Magic run from 2011.
  10. Darla, I could see Kokomo. There are some nice marbles in this thread. A really good turquoise color is not easy to find on a marble, IMO. Here's a big Vitro. I always like the ones with more clear.
  11. I agree with a mineral sphere on the right. And I like the one on the left, it looks like stoneware to me.
  12. That is a special marble, Lloyd - a beautiful specimen.
  13. For collecting purposes, it might be important to more precisely specify size (to 1/32" or even 1/64"). But for packaging and sales purposes, if they didn't go through the #0 hole and they did fit through the #1 hole they were sized as #1s, which means #1 marbles ranged in size from >5/8" to <11/16". This is a pretty big range when you think about it (just shy of 1/8"). But when you're making kid's toys by the boxcar, it's probably a reasonable tolerance.
  14. It looks like she's having a good time and enjoys marbles just like her Dad, Craig, and she is adorable - must get that from her Mother.
  15. Indeed, nothing beats authentic examples, bags, boxes, dug, etc. for learning the different types, and the more you can have in hand, the better.

Thanks for these pictures, Winnie. They are wonderful! Can you imagine how awesome they would have seemed when they were new? It's fun to think about.

    That's what I see.
  18. Some of Edward Grist's last books, with Ron's marbles, Popular American Marbles and American Machine Made Marbles are good books for swirls. JoeMarbles site, Steph's Study Hall and searches here can also be informative. To me, it looks like you have a lot of Alleys, perhaps some Champion, Ravenswood, etc., and some newer ones too. If you start sorting by color and then try to group marbles with the same-color and similar-patterns you'll be heading in the right direction. Then you could try bringing the groups of marbles with similar patterns and different colors together. It sounds like all kinds of fun to me!
  19. Very cool - and Mickey was only 7 years old!
  20. Pick out the ones with multiple colors, the odd ones, and the busy ones, and show them to us!
  21. I think I see three colors - four counting the base glass. What do you see?
  22. Hey Pop, All three of the swirls in the front of your second pic in the op are Ravenswood. I agree with Dave about the cat's eye too.
