    Big Akro?

I last spoke to Ron about the Paul Bunyans marbles at the Decatur show in April, just a few days before he passed away. We had been discussing these marbles over many years and had gone back and forth between Master, Akro and Ravenswood - even though they they don't look like any other known Ravenswood production. At one point, probably about 15 years ago or so, Ron had interviewed a woman whose father worked for Ravenswood and she said that she remembered her father making them. She showed Ron several examples and said that her father would occasionally bring those marbles home when they were still warm. She claimed that he made them on weekends over a relatively short period of time at the Trenle Blake pottery factory that was just a stone's throw away from the Ravenswood site. Trenle Blake is well known for producing the very popular heavy white with green stripes dinner ware that was common in diners and restaurants back in the day. And over the past few years Ron had become convinced that her account was most likely true and that the marbles were actually made, packaged and sold by Ravenswood, just as she described, primarily to supply marbles for the wooden Paul Bunyan/Babe the Blue Ox "Perpetual Motion" Toy. Ron certainly had other reasons for ultimately coming to believe that this was the history of these marbles but this is the gist of it.
  2. Hmmmm, not an American marble I'm familiar with. Really nice though - any Cat's Eye in nice colored glass is great!

    ‽‽‽

Looks like a nice Akro patch to me, Joe - cool eye lashes too.
  4. Do you have a subscription or something? 😉 I especially like that second one - do you know what it's called?
  5. Those are nice games, Chad! I'm always down for a game of skip ball - it's one of my favorites too.
  6. Blue Oxbloods usually have the blue and oxblood separate but since they aren't showing any oxblood in the photo I'm thinking it's not one of those. I'm thinking that last one may have oxblood under the blue. I call them "Bluebloods" - it's usually pretty hard to see the oxblood without a really strong light but it is an interesting type of Akro marble.
  7. Pretty sure it's from (John) Gentile Glass out of Star City, WV.

    Corkscrew?

Welcome to the Marble Connection. The marble you are showing is likely Asian. They are frequently referred to as Imperial types. I think they were made as early as the 1960s.
  9. To be specific, I'd call it an art glass marble, as opposed to a toy glass marble made for play.
  10. A nice corkscrew but for a good Popeye I would hope to see more clear and wispier white. It might be a sort of "tweener" though.

    Alley? Pelt?

I'm sure you've seen the pattern, Rick. Here is an example (Edna's marble @sissydear). I think this was from the D.A.S. True North Run. I probably have a Pelt or two with the trait but this was easier to find. 🙂
  12. This red, white and blue is 3/4". Jackson's Marbles this large are rare.
  13. Here is another good Jackson type.
  14. I just fixed a couple of broken photo links in my old posts in this topic. Here are a couple of more Jacksons. They are often referred to as Furnace Marbles and they are very hard to find without fractures.
  15. I just fixed a bunch of broken photo links in my old posts in this topic. And since it's a mostly pics thread . . . This type in the salesman's sample case.
  16. Part of what had me thinking Pelt . . .
  17. The first is a Prizename and the last is a two-color Spiral (Corkscrew). I never heard of a "Buttermilk" Akro. That name is usually associated with a particular type of Vitro.
  18. Akro may have marketed it as an Ace - nice marble.
  19. I think RAR nailed it. And yes, I question the green one too. It looks like it has one vane that is too large and too thin for a Peltier Banana- the glass looks off to me too.
  20. It's beautiful, Bill. I could look at that all day. I'll bet your dog loves the weather - looks like a furry beast. 🙂 We're expecting our first hard freeze this weekend here in west-central Indiana, and I'm looking forward to it!
  21. That is a Moss Agate on the left but it's hard to tell if it's Akro or Master from these views. The other two are Alley Agates.
