  1. Used pretty much concurrently? Or are there some vague age demarcations? or is there little-to-no info on which boxes came first, middlin' and last? Of course what I've been most curious about for the longest time is that nebulous area "between" NLR's and Rainbos. If some boxes were definitely pre-1930, and some were definitely post-1935 and some likely post-1940, or post WWII ... for example ... that could help some other jigsaw pieces fall into place. ... that's my hope .... It's more of a curiosity to me now than it used to be. It used to seem vital. I used to "need" to understand when and where and how "tweeners" happened. Now, I'm beginning to get why some don't care. It's either got the NLR look or it doesn't. If it doesn't, it can still be pretty, but quit trying to force things into the NLR box. I get that now. But I'm still _interested_. :-)
  2. Here's the spinner cup Brian Graham shared awhile back. (The thread was lost in the reorganization of the board. He gave me the okay to repost it.) Thanks Brian. :-)
  3. Oh my. Now this would have been a fun present to give and get! An O' Boy! gift box. (click to enlarge) From the Marquee auction description:
  4. Peppermint? Not sure how blue came to be needed to qualify a marble as a "Peppermint Swirl", but otherwise the similarities in appearance between the marble and the candy are fairly strong. imho :-) . . (1) (2)
  5. Which boxes would be older, "National Line" or "National Marbles"? These are both Peerless boxes so I thought they'd be interesting for comparison. The first is one Lizzy posted awhile back of someone's grandparents' mibs. It's the only "National Line" box I've been able to find in my saved photos, which seems really weird to me since the name is so famous. The second is from Norm's collection at Bonham's. (Both say "National Toy Marbles" on one end. On the opposite end the National Line box says it was "Manufactured by M. Gropper & Sons, Inc., New York, N. Y., U. S. A." Don't know what's on the other end of the National Marbles box.)
  6. It's a plausible story. A bench mounted press doesn't sound like it would take up a lot of room. Sounds to me as if it would have been relatively easy to hide.

  11. I love these. They're so different from anything else. How mass-produced do you think these were? How individualized? Would you consider them hand-made?
  12. Felicia, here's the thread I was thinking of where they were talking about how many colors a corkscrew could possibly have, 6 Plus Color Popeye? A lot of the talk is about whether one particular popeye auctioned at eBay was authentic ... and later about whether the bidders on the auction were "authentic" because the price went so high. But part was specifically about how Akro used nozzles to get different colors into one marble, and how many total nozzles they might have used. Also there was some talk about the mechanics of the spinner cup, and whether it could stop or slow down or otherwise produce an anomaly. (The spinner cup is what made the ribbon colors twist around the marble.) Well, now that I've pointed you at the thread, I'm going to go back and try to understand it. I'm not very mechanically inclined but I sure find it fascinating.
  13. Thank you BOTH! Al, your pix showed what I wanted Felicia to see. Elizabeth, yours are whipped cream and a cherry on top!
  14. I've been going through my list of old Akro links today. There was one to a thread about opaque sparklers. The thread's gone, but I still have these scans from it, from Baumann's Collecting Antique Marbles, 4th ed. Thought someone might consider them interesting. (as do I but I have my own copy of the book, so this is really for you ) (click to enlarge)
  15. I've been wanting a thread for tournament memorabilia. So, here's a spot for someone (anyone who wishes) to add examples "sometime". I'll start it out with this Wildwood, NJ video making the rounds at the various boards today. South Jersey Video Magazine: 2006 National Marbles Championship. (Note: the video was very choppy the first time I listened. But when I played it again right afterwards, the delivery was very clear. )
  16. Thanks Dani. Felicia, my cautious answer is "probably". We have to tread very gently with picture-less identifications! lol! But a popeye is a corkscrew, so if it looks enough like a popeye, it probably is a cork. (Plus, I remember seeing that one in the printed photos you snail mailed me, and I thought it might be a cork before you even mentioned it.) Btw, yours would have to have noticeable amounts of clear and wispy white glass in addition to the white base and blue and yellow ribbons before it was a "Popeye". But since it has three colors (white, blue and yellow), it at least qualifies to be what is known as a "Special". (imho) There are corkscrews with many colors in the same marble. One recent thread here had a theoretical discussion about how many colors a cork could have. The discussion went into the physical properties of the machinery used to create cork ribbons. I'll try to find a link to that.
  17. I'm trying to update my lists of interesting threads. One broken link once went to a thread called "Odd Akro". I had made a note beside the link saying it was about the direction of spin of a corkscrew but I don't remember what direction the Akro in question spun, so I don't know what was odd! I figure if it was an interesting question then, it might be interesting now, so IS one direction of spin more common than another for corks? If so, which one? And how much more common is it? What do your own samplings tell you? 60% of the small sample in my house spiral in what I think of as a clockwise fashion. With a sample size as small as mine, 60% is pretty much the same as 50%, statistically speaking, so I can't draw a conclusion from my bunch.

    Master Shooters

Roger, regarding your A to my Q ... If you saw a marble above an inch which looked like it could be a Master, would the size have the power to make you say, "No, not master, gotta be something else"? A monetary translation of the question would be something along the lines of, if you found a marble for sale tomorrow which looked totally like a sunburst, but it was 1.2" wide, how much would you pay for it? If the seller was asking a price consistent with "too rare to value", would you think about paying it? Or would you walk away unless he came down to a, "this is interesting, I don't believe it's a Master, but it's still unusual" price? Jane, sweet pink!
  20. Though I hope I'll find more among the threads I haven't yet read, there aren't a lot of Master threads on the board. When they happen, a wide of assortment of examples might be put in the same thread. So, even though most of the categories below have nothing in them, they are keywords for some of the things you might see in the "Various examples" and "Picture gallery" threads. 1933

Yup, John had it. That's where I'd seen it before, his postcard of "the Master Marble House on the Enchanted Island", which he has now so nicely added here. The pre-written note on the back says, The drawing of the house says "Master Marbles Shop" on it. I guess you'd go into that bubbly glass building and buy your College Collection sets and who knows what all! Talk about a hefty advertising budget! My next question is how long did the house of marbles stand?!
