Damn.... 50ยข was pretty pricey for the era... No wonder we don't see many.

WOW!! I've never heard of those!!! COOL!!! There were some similar marbles that came in with reproduction fox & geese boards back in the 1990's?? They were small-ish in size and probably much cruder in quality... (They do appear hand rounded... Probably by little third world starving children...) Before anyone starts searching these out, they should be aware of the new ones... The best way to know what's old, is to know what's not.... I have some, if we can do a comparison of pics, it may be good reference...

:Emoticon-jawdrop: Wow!! That's cool!!

These are a little more "Agricultural" that Industrial..... Marebles Those are some pretty fancy prices for clearies!!!! :Sad_headshake_tweetz:

If that's the case, I'd try my best to save as much of it as you can and hold out for a better method than the machine... I'm thinkin' the picture is an illusion of the stretched color making it look lemon shaped? (Top right of new photos)... How bad is the out-of-round?

A rock tumbler is like a barrel, partially filled with a wet sand-like substance (varied grit size for varied fine-ness of finish) that rolls around like a cement mixer. When stones or glass are added, any fractured pieces are chipped off and sharp edges are smoothed. To attempt to remove damage... Now that I can see the "Out of Round" better, it does not look like the original shape of the marble... I'm betting this had a LOT more damage that has already been removed... Probably by hand, just because the pontils have been spared. And, either the person doing it gave up at this point, or just didn't have a way to polish it any finer.... Your right!! Ignorance of the law is no excuse!!!! LOL It was probably done by someone who was experimenting... It may have been a plain white ball of fractured glass when they started... When I tossed marbles (NOT like this one!!! LOL) into a tumbler, it was pre-1973 (I was still in school...) Not too many people I knew had a clue of how to fix severely damaged marbles. So, I experimented.... I never really learned a lot about how to do it. But, I DID learn a lot about what NOT to do!!! LOL (Scratch rock tumbler OFF the list..... :Sad_headshake_tweetz: ) If this really looks like a lemon (Or, is that an illusion of the picture in the top right corner?) it may be just fine to send it to Leroy.... The ends will open up a lot. But, it will be as beautiful and as round as it can possibly be... That may be as much as you can hope for.... Now I can see the possibility of MANY small lobes... If the color surface really looks distinctly, evenly scalloped, it is... I've heard of as many as 24, or more, lobes. This looks like it may be a lot more than that. (It's still kinda hard to be sure with the pictures... But, it does sort of look like it could be.)

This is one of the many great losses with the passing of Larry Castle!! Larry could hand polish this marble, keeping whatever may be still there for pontils.... The damage does look to be pretty shallow, so polishing would be a good move... It looks like it may have spent some time in an aquarium, or someone may have rolled it around in a stone polisher (I experimented like that, many years ago... The surface looks familiar!!) It could be that even the natural rough look of the pontils has been lost. I think it's definitely in the "damaged beyond holding it's value as-is" stage... The question now becomes... How to restore?? It could go to Leroy and be beautiful... The ends may open up, depending on how deep Leroy has to polish and how deep the color of the pontils is... If it's naturally out of round, larger at the pontils, that's a down side for machine polishing... But, it is the easiest and least expensive route... Then, the question becomes... Would a more expensive, not as easy method retain more value?? I think so..... Even if the pontils can't be restored to look natural, they won't open up, if done by hand. JVV is right... His method is probably the best... Yes, it may end up a little more out of round. But, that's what it is anyway, so not so much of a big deal.... Some have tried J's method of working with the pads and had difficulty... So, J... When will you offer that service for sale??? LOL (It may be worth the cost of shipping to Netherlands!!!) Other than the pad use... My thinking would be, to try and find someone who can polish as Larry did (By hand on a polishing wheel....) Is there anyone still doing this?? Anyone know?? I'm not seeing lobes in this marble.... But, the best way to check it out is... put it into water and look at it from the pontil view... It should show a lot more, like below....

I've just received a forwarded email to Lloyd Huffer, from Larry's email.... That marble show in the sky just keeps getting better!!! My heart goes out to Larry's family and closer friends... I always enjoyed the few short times we met, or communicated from a distance... He was a wonderful man.... I always thought I'd see him again, one day....

:rol: Ya know.... Let's make it REALLY easy and say.... Show a marble that reminds you of the holidaze... We only have this month to do it, so do it GOOD!!! :Happy_143: (Bob... Snow, sugar or salt??? Whose gonna clean that up??? ROFL!!)

Uh Oh.... Pardon my late night confusion..... When I put in "Snowy" I was pulling the word from the quote... NOT claiming that the mica in the marble needed to be "snowy" in appearance!!! Then.... OK, your right... As a handmade collector, I forget how much this excludes the machine made collectors... So, let's call aventurine acceptable... I was leery of including aventurine, cuz I think we did it before.... Oh Heck!! Let's just say.... If the marble reminds you of the holiday season, it's a GO!!! We really don't have to stick to rules for this, right???

Ziggyzora made this request in the last November color post.... So, here's the challenge!! Marbles should be predominant in either red or green (or Both!!) But, they must have "snowy" mica!!! Ready, Set......... GO!!!!

WOW, Winnie, that's wild!!! What is it??

Totally awesome, Jo!!!! Great pics, beautiful marbles and how cool is it to have it documented for so many to enjoy!! I can't wait to see the show!! You GO, Girl!!!

DAMN Royal!!! :Emoticon-jawdrop: Those are gorgous!!!!

LOL, Kevin!! Ya know, the real funky-ness is in the picture, rather than the cat... I took it a long time ago with one of those "eye ball" computer video cams, before I bought a digital camera. A pure accident, that came out AWESOME!!! Does that last one cork?? It looks like a cork style...

Damn... What a cool find!!! That would certainly be fair... At $15.00 ea. your lookin' at $180... I would think, in that condition, they would fly for that.... Then, given the original case box?? I'd even think $200-250 might be fair...

We get crap for deleting threads, too..... Hell, I even used to get crap for correcting embarrassing spelling errors.... So, I stopped... :Sad_headshake_tweetz:

Chill Boys!!! Hey Kevin... 'Sorry man... But, you hit on an old sore spot for a lot of people... That would be... reviving an ancient post for no apparent reason... If there IS a good reason, it's probably a wiser move to make a new post, state the reason and link the old thread into the new post.... This particular thread was kinda rough for a lot of us... Let's let it go....... Please?? :Happy_143:

Oh Crap, Bo... Don't fall for THAT one!!! That's where all my generation lost their cred to a new bunch, who thought they knew it all and still profess to, cuz they conned people into believing they were experts and got someone to publish it!!! Now, those of us who "Used" to know stuff, don't know "$hit" and there's print to PROVE it!!! :icon_lmao: What's an End-of-Day??? How many colors have to be in a Joseph's Coat?? Can a cloud have 2 pontils?? After about 30 years of "Thinking" I knew what I was doing, I learned (from a guy no one knew "Who the hell is that?? Stan's kid??") all I knew was wrong..... Yep, I read it in his book!!! :Sad_headshake_tweetz:

DAMN Derrick!!!! I'm not quite sure I know how to spell the noise I made when I enlarged that picture!!! :Emoticon-jawdrop:

Mary, I was kinda holding out for someone who could give a good precise explaination, because I'm just not too confident in mine.... I have a box of Akro Flinties, but they're not where I can get to them in a hurry, so I can't look... They aren't clear, or transparent.... They are translucent... Which is "cloudy" like murky water... Light can be seen through it and you may be able to see particles or bubbles that are near the surface, but otherwise, it's solid... Opague would be dead solid. You cannot see light through it at all... Those are the three basic "densities" of color in marbles... Transparent, translucent and opaque. I *think* the "eyes" that are mentioned, are like a transparent tunnel going through the marble that allows a lot more light through in that spot... Maybe, possible to even see through it?? Vaguely?? (That I don't know...) One of the reasons I hesitated to answer was... I don't think the flinties in my box have eyes... I think I'd have noticed that, but because I didn't and I can't actually look, right now, I'm not sure... Soooo, do all Flinties have eyes?? Either they don't, or my memory is worse than I thought. edit: HA, I shoulda held out just a little longer!!! Steph & I were typing at the same time!!!

Edna, how incredibly COOOOOL it must have been to watch this!!!! Thanks so much for bringing it to us!! Windy!!!! GREAT news!!! See, marble karma!! LOL
