Refer back to....... (The wisest words in the thread.) Some got it, some don't.... What's not to get? (Just smile Galen. C'mon, I KNOW you can do it!!) Bartender, I'll have 2 of whatever he's drinkin'!!!
-
Ooops, I forgot to thank Wayne and his great analogy!!! Ya need a great question to get great answers!! Thanks Wayne!!
-
Is that a Beetem??? What size?? (I think Glass Eye might be copying his...) I wouldn't say that!!! They aren't cheap!! And yes, they are BEAUTIFUL!!!
-
I seem to remember that.... It'd be nice to see more of it.... (Without the flapping and clucking.... )
-
I love the purple & red parrot!!! 'Nice shoppin'!!!!

I didn't know a lot were locked... But apparently, there is some sort of net etiquette thing about not digging up a lot of old threads... I never could figure that out... Though, when I saw this one, I was thinkin' I'd have to look up some pictures. Then, I realized I'd already done it... So, I guess it's to avoid confusion and back-peddling... I think the solution is to begin a new thread and link the old thread into it... That green spiral is so cool!!!!

I love it!!!

How absolutely AWESOME!!!! Every once in a while we have a thread that really makes me proud to be a part of this board. This is one of those threads!!! Thanks so much Ron!!! And, Thanks and Good Luck, Nancy!!! Keep us posted when things happen!!

Steph already mentioned it's a good point... I know there was consideration for those who could accept, or have relatives accept the award... The historical names should simply be there without much question. (It would be cool to find relatives who cared...) I think everyone caught on.... Post #3 is a perfect response!!! In respect to those who put in a lot of effort and did a lot of work in the Texas group, I'm kinda glad we could turn the humor to a logical explanation for why some aren't jumping onboard the train so fast.... Also a good point... There's a lot more names on Mark's list than I'd have considered... As long as the scope was that wide, I added a few I wouldn't have with a smaller field. Yes.... That will narrow the field again.... Holy Molies, Cees!!!! Be patient!! We're still in Texas, for now!!! LOL (Considering the earlier collectible marbles came from Europe, you make a good point, too!!) I'd second that!!!
-
C'mon Steve!!! You know me better than that!! (Thanks David!!) All I'm sayin' is.... If a kid tosses a stone into the hen house and everything goes "aflap." You know damned well that kids gonna toss a stone every chance he gets.... Even if it DOES get him in trouble once in a while... And, if he gets in trouble, He's gonna come up with every excuse imaginable to justify it!! ("I thought I saw a fox....") The best way to make it stop? Toss 'im a cluck and move on.....
-
Which may also be a fun reason for them to do it!!! .... Just sayin'..... Mmmmmmmm, it does have a certain effect!!! LOL
-
There ya go, David!!!! On there's 2 good views to this... It's the "nasty" that makes it a problem... Avoiding "Nasty" means we all have to have some respect for others opinions. Even if we don't paticularly agree, or like them....
-
And yes!! That is absolutely correct, Ann!!! This is a "Discussion Board".... Consider.... Just how boring "Wow, that's cool!!" "Nice!!" "Yeah!!! I like that" can get after a while?? If we have nothing to discuss besides how awesome everything is, I could sure get a lot more of my "real" work done!!! (I must admit... It's awesome when everyone DOES get along!!)
-
David and I have had a few PM's about this.... Now David, do you see my point?? I am totally onboard with this "Hall of Fame" idea... And, I appreciate the thought behind what has transpired in Texas... But, I also think, before this becomes the "American" hall of fame, it needs to be handled with much less haste and far more thought, to be taken seriously....

Hey guys, there's no need to get nasty with each other, here... It's simply a matter of looking at a situation from 2 different angles. Brian, I understand what your saying.... And, I agree. I collect carpet balls... A few (mmm, quite a few, now...) years ago, a woman who was a direct descendant of the family that created most of the early carpet balls, re-opened production in (I think) the original factory... These were considered by many to be repros!! Well..... Why?? No matter what we do in these cases, there's no way around the fact that... On one hand, they are a continuation and should simply be accepted for that... On the other hand... If a valuation scale has been established for the older version, will the new version damage that scale?? I can solidly stand behind the idea of "Buy what you like, like what you buy..." It shouldn't be about the money.... BUT, let's get REAL!!! For those of you who have never invested serious money in a marble, that's easy!!! Sure... I bought some of those newer carpet balls... I bought them because I LIKED them!!! But, at least for one, I probably paid more than I should have.... C'mon... NOBODY likes to do that... Also.... As soon as word got out about these balls, the value of my old ones dropped at least 50%. That's OK, I don't plan on selling them any time soon... But, I would like to think that when it does come time for me to pass them on (either to family, or in sale) they'd be worth at least what I paid for them!! Due to the cloudiness of that market, because of the newly made balls... I honestly doubt that will happen in my lifetime.... I keep hearing a LOT about Galen's negativity... You can do all you want to try and silence Galen. But, Galen has some very good points. And, he's not the only one who feels that way!!! He's simply the only one who doesn't give a rat's ass about what you call him for his opinion. Honestly, I don't like Galen's negativity, either.... But, he is a member of our community and his thoughts represent the thoughts of more than you may know... Some boards would play Ostrich, ban him and say he and his thoughts don't exist... They DO exist!!! AND, they DO have credibility!!!! If the carpet ball analogy isn't enough, I can go on..... I had a whole kitchen full of cobalt blue Fiesta.... Worth a LOT of money as one of the top colors.... Until Homer-Laughlin "re-issued" a color so similar, it's difficult to tell them apart. The collectors fear it and the retail people figure, "Why should I pay big bucks for old, when I can buy it new, for cheap??" Whether we like it or not, there IS an element of economics here.... For a serious length of time, the "general" German handmade marbles were "dead" on the market... Because books came out about machine made marbles.... I heard over and over.... "Everyone wants the machine made's now..." Brian, you DON'T have to take Galen so seriously.... He doesn't care if you do or don't. He DOES have a point, though.... It may not be the brightest, most fun aspect of our hobby... But, it's a point that everyone should consider just a little bit...
-
I never had the luck of meeting Patry... But, she was a joy to have on the boards... I'm sure there's many others for this list. I only know those who were in the east, or traveled here... Oh, another.... Lyn Christian and his trust dalmation "Agate!!"
-
Gail, what happened??? Did it ever show up? There's only 3 of us who could have deleted it and none of us would!! I'm so bummed.... I've done a couple of those reports and, yeah..., It's a ton of work!! However it happened, I'm so sorry!!
-
Thanks Mark!!! We were posting at the same time.... Now, THAT'S a list!! Add to it... Bev Brule Bill Sweet Stan & Claire Block (Ditch the kids...) Bud Braumlich (Sp??) Dudley Giberson Jim Ridpath Larry Castle Marlow Peterson Lloyd Huffer Larry Svacina NOW, we're getting somewhere!!
-
I agree with Alan... You need to get some REAL names up there... Les Jones was a good hit... Beyond that, you need a history lesson!!

American Marble Hall Of Fame Information

I apologize Edna!! I didn't realize the detail you went through to explain this in the Texas Show thread.... Check it out HERE 'Seems like it should have a title thread of it's own anyway!!! -
Texas Marble Collectors, Inc. May 1 Show
Scoop replied to sissydear's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Wow!! What a GREAT thread!!! I've been passing over it because it's so long... I apologize!!! When I created the post about the hall of fame, I hadn't seen how well it was documented here... That's what I was looking for.... I'll post a link. Cal and Sheryl!!!! I miss you guys!!!!! I guess I'm gonna have to try making it to a west coast (Or, Texas) show!!! -
What would you mean by contemporary? Jabo or Vacor?? It certainly doesn't look artist made... If a new marble is machine made, could we use "modern" instead?? Contemporary is and has been, so connected to artist made marbles... Using it in context with production marbles seems needlessly confusing. (Ooops, excuse me... Is my OCD showing?? )
-
LOL.... You guys look funny when your mad.... These side by side pictures are EXACTLY what I was looking for in a past thread!! Where were they then?? And... Whether we like or dislike Jabos, why can't we simply pull together a reference that shows all that is said here??? We can't stop production.... AND, We can't make everyone happy about production... So, why are we still arguing about it?? Let's DO something about it.... As far as these 4 marbles go.... I think they illustrate EXACTLY what Galen has been talking about... I know I'll get kicked for agreeing with him... But, damn-it he IS right!!! Anyone who can't see that is swimming in "De Nile!!!" While we have the ability, quantity and knowledge, we should be getting these comparisons.... And the explaination of how they differ..... documented... (Hint - Joesmarbles.com.... An EXCELLENT place to do it!!) OTOH....... Considering.... I'll take the Jabos over the Germans anyday...... 'Sorry to the naysayers... Those marbles ROCK!!
-
If the "word" is out on Penn. Dutch, what the heck happened to THIS one??? Alan's Auction... 'Wish I'd been home!! I'da bid a lot more than that!! Sure it's got some dings... But, great colors!!! 'Sorry I missed the question on size of mine... I'd have to dig it out (The photo was in file) Off the top of my head, I'd say it's about the same as the one in this auction... About 1¾" sounds close...

I am sincerely interested in hearing about this idea from the Texas Marble Club. I'd like to give Edna and the rest of the club a fresh page to let us know what has transpired so far on this idea... We understand it is a work in progress. But, we'd like to know how it originated and get an idea of the "vision" for it, so that we can embrace it as a POSITIVE thing. (There's another thread available for anything else....) Edna? Can you fill us in? Thanks!!
