  1. I'll try, Bill... I took that picture a while ago... It can only be in one of 10-15? places?? LOL 'Look forward to seeing you!! :-)
  2. I wonder what was in the prescription bottle?? That may explain the description???
  3. Ohhhhhhh Yeahhhhhhh!!! I was watchin' that one!! $2402.00 to be exact!! 'Kinda makes me wanna go see where I stashed mine.... LOL
  4. Hey Ric, I think your right on track with both of yours... The green one is odd with that hole in it... It could be a blow-out (does the inner end look like the inside of a bubble?) It looks very round and regular for a blow-out... Who knows what has happened to these things over the years.... But, I think it's origin is the same as the others here.
  5. Yep... If it looks like a bead, acts like a bead and has a hole all the way through it, Odds are..... It's a Bead!! Most beads / glass I've seen like this, is usually made in Bohemia, currently part of the Czech Republic. Odds are, it was torch-made... Here's one of many sites with a history of Czech lampwork... Big Bead, Little Bead
  6. I was gonna say that too.... Before I got to the Z problem, I was thinking the N made a nice Z.....
  7. I'm pretty positive that I have some that are double ribbons... 'Not sure if I can lay hands on 'em easily.... I'll try!!
  8. The "Hard-ass" style isn't new here... It's probably the most effective method of pulling things back together... It's had very effective results in the past.... It's also had some drastic results. Lou & I have pulled it off before, very successfully... But, I don't think either of us has the nature to keep that mask on for too long... Maybe Dave can pull it off better... The thing is... For every action, there is a reaction. Anticipating the reaction is tricky... Wise words here..... Nothing is always what it seems. And, people don't always act as expected... You nailed it, Scott!!!!
  9. Hey RD, I made the post happen... But, not the story. That was Don's!! I wondered about "Glass Wax"... I haven't seen it in a while, but I remember having some when we were kids... ('Seems to me we had it to do Christmas designs on the windows....) Also... An old brick mason once told me... If you put masonary sealer in a "sick" bottle, it will eliminate (or cover) the stain and it's so tough, it holds up for ever... I've never tried it... On a marble, the problem would be how to coat it evenly without leaving any marks... But, with a handmade, maybe a type of "punty" could be glued to the pontil??? Maybe a candle, melted to the pontil? So, the wax would act as a resist? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.............
  10. Uhhhhhhhh.... I think Lou got confused.... It was actually Steph that mentioned Dave... I'm fine with it!! Good Luck, Man!! But, it wasn't my request... My suggestion was setting a time line for moderators and let everyone try it out... 3 months, 6 months, a year?? I'm not sure how long it takes to get the "drift..." Dave.... If I've said it once, I've said it a THOUSAND times.... Mods don't have the power to ban... Guess what that means??? If you guessed that you can't ban anyone......... YOUR RIGHT!!!!! You CAN however, do whatever you like to influence Lou to ban.... Sometimes it works, sometimes it don't..... I'll be hangin' out... I'm not in any kinda huff, or anything.... I just came to the conclusion that... When asked to address a situation that a mod needs to address, every fiber in my body and soul said... "My GOD, I'm sick and tired of this!!!" If I can't do what I'm supposed to do, when I'm supposed to do it... It's time to pass the torch... Hang in, Dave!!!
  11. I mentioned that to Don, too.... He said in hand it looks a lot better. The lights highlight the surface wear.
  12. This marble has been really disturbing me, because there is no way at all to explain it... I'm not understanding the mention of a fancy Bennington... Or, the "marble on the left." I'm assuming the single marble above is the same marble as the one in the group shot, closest to the quarter?... The middle marble looks machine made... The one on the left... I can't make out much at all... Am I missing other photos?? If the single one in question is glass (it seems to be)and it's been dug in a place that hasn't been goofed around with, there's few explanations that make sense... The most logical that I can come up with, would be a "random torch made marble"... There have been glassworkers making torch made items for years... Just as the best explanation for other handmade marble oddities has often been, "Possibly made by a glassworker as a gift for a child." This would be my guess... The fact that it's red and green says "Christmas?" to me.... Then, Dan suggested hat pins... Hmmmmmm!!! Does it have a teeny metallic spot on it?? So many "Old Attic" marble bags included objects that could be used as marbles, but never began that way.... If a hatpin was broken, or no longer used, cutting off the shaft and giving the "ball" to a child seemed like a common enough practice. Here's a couple of hatpins that fit that bill... I believe they may be a bit larger... But, not much. I think they run about 5/8"... The reason I mention a site "Not goofed with..." There are a LOT of pranksters out there, who just love to toss something into a popular dug area, with the thought of, "This will really screw with their heads!!! LOL" Never assume something in the ground has been there for a long time....
  13. Don has had difficulties with posting his photos here. So, here ya go, Don!!! Sometimes, you really have to wait for a marble before you can own it, in this case it took over TWENTY YEARS, forget instant gratification. When I first started collecting marbles, I met an antique dealer that liked them too, and showed me her modest collection. I don't remember exactly when that was, it's lost in the mists of time, but it was sometime in the 80's, I really don't remember early or late. She had a nice little collection, but no headliners except one--what is or is darn near the biggest double-ribbon core swirl I have ever seen, and I've seen a few. It's a full 2 1/4 inches. She wasn't ready to sell, so I just thanked her and filed away the dream. I saw her many times, but no go. Finally, a few years ago, she took sick and died. I am on good terms with her son who is also a dealer, and since we are not interested in the same items, we get along great, he is a furniture guy mainly. I started talking to him about them, and he said his mom always meant to sell me her marbles, but ran out of time. Long story shorter, he showed them to me 2 years ago, but we couldn't get together on price. He said there were more, and he would find them, and we'd do a bigger deal. OK. It was good to see the old DRC again, to know it was still there. Finally, about a month ago, I got the call, the others had been found, and cash was needed more than the marbles. A deal was struck, I thought it was fair both ways, (in other words, I would have liked them to be less, but that's life) and I finally have brought the big DRC in from the Outlands to the embrace of my collection. It's kind of scratched up, but it looks worse in the pics than it is. I can't help it, I haven't owned it its whole life. It is too good to buff somehow, it really escaped a lot of the abuse many swirls got, so I'll just take it as is. I could polish it myself, but I am resisting temptation. Some of the others are nice, but nothing to stop traffic. All the little stuff was ordinary, there were a couple nice dark green/blue mica's. This was my biggest buy, in money and amount of big marbles, in 15 years. Depending on when I first saw them, it could be over 25 years in the making. So, as so often happens, you have to have somebody die to get something, but it pays to stay in touch, and be kindly towards the heirs! I have another similar story I may post soon, about a sulphide. Stay tuned, and long live big ol' handmade marbles, they are one of the corner stones upon which marble collecting was based.
  14. Ask her to change the category... If she wants proof of the marbles "vintage," there are sites that show these as brand new... I agree Galen, she DOES know exactly what she's doing!!!
  15. David, I think you did the perfect thing... Being aggressively nasty or accusing in these situations never works out... I don't keep too much track of the sellers we've had issues with, here... It seems to me Tammy has been one. She has her auctions down to a fine science... "Less said, more insinuated." Other than calling it a "Vintage" marble and having it listed in the Pre-1970 handmade category, she's left all other assumptions to the buyer. If we were to take on any campaign to correct her, we should begin by consistantly requesting that she change categories... "Vintage" is subjective as a word. And, her title cannot be changed once there are bids... So, that's moot... She can change categories. If she doesn't change when requested (especially by many people...) I would think that would be grounds to report her... Bidding, winning and leaving negs??? If the "nice way" doesn't work, it's an option....
  16. Roger, the last time this came up, I made the mistake of saying, "It doesn't matter..." (I'm not sure... But, I think that was the basis of your signature comment??) Maybe this time I can say it better and explain what I meant.... I don't think there's any way of forcing it to be cut & dried. Just with the few people we have in this thread, there are varied opinions... Honestly, I can't remember the stand I took before (if I took one at all...) I just don't think there's any way we can stop people from having these varied opinions... Like the comment, "Depends on whether your buying or selling...." The fine line is going to move around... So.... What I meant was... In the end, the name doesn't really matter... The marble itself will either "Float the Boat," or it won't... Alan may call that marble a Superboy.... Personally, I don't see it. It sure looks like a Spiderman to me... Too much orange?? OK, a jaundiced Spiderman... It just doesn't look at all like what I'm thinking of when I think of a Superboy... Someone else may say it's just not the right color for a Spiderman... Whose right? Both? or neither? Does it matter? I just can't see the buyer paying more for it based on the name. That marble is what it is... You can call it a Superboy, a Spiderman or "Jaundiced George." That's what doesn't matter... It's not going to get more money because it's called a Superboy... It may get more hits due to the key search word... In that respect, it may get more attention and sell better... But, I don't think a collector who is searching for a really nice Superboy is gonna jump all over that, just because of what it's called.... Does that make sense of what we couldn't make sense of before??
  17. It was wonderful to receive this in an email this morning. Thanks so much for posting it Steve!! I noticed the email said it was copied with permission.... Would it be OK to copy it to Glass Addiction? There will be a "Celebration of Weldon's Life" this evening between 6 & 8 Waller time.... Since I can't be in Waller, I plan on taking that time to do something special... 'Not sure what, yet... Maybe I'll actually take a moment to plant some plants that have been patiently waiting since spring (One group has been waiting 2 years!!!) For those who wish to honor Weldon, but cannot be at the celebration, I'm sure, any simple act of random kindness or nurturing of life, would be a very suitable tribute....
  18. For those who might be able to attend services... Or, who may want to send something, here's the schedule with actual locations... Visitation will be at the Waller United Methodist Church, Waller, Texas, on Wednesday, July 28 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. A memorial celebration of his life will be on Thursday, July 29 at 1:00 p.m. at Canon Funeral Home in Waller. Internment will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Kerens, Texas at 10:00am on Friday, July 30.
  19. Damn, I missed it!!! Hope it was awesome, Bill!!!!
  20. Wow!!! Cool find!!! AWESOME price!!!
  21. You GO, Girl!!!! 'Can't wait for next year!!! Welcome aboard!! There's usually more "Vintage" marble talk here... But, it's always great to see contemporary makers here, too... We've gotta work to rally those vintage collectors into the modern age!!! LOL
  22. Mmmmmm, I think I can see logic here... If your in a tent or camper and you hear noises outside? It may be wiser to remotely click on the light, than to step outside and confront a bear!!! LOL
  23. Oh, I'm SO sorry to hear this!!! I've only had the opportunity to meet Weldon once, and briefly at that... But, having seen his pictures and heard of his travels, I feel as if I know him so much better than that.... I always think of him with a smile... Edna, please get better soon. Though I know the deepest hurt isn't physical. We love you and send all the prayers, hugs and karma possible... I'm so, so sorry......
  24. Damn!! I missed it!! We were off to the beach celebrating for my niece!! 'Hope it was awesome, Boss!!!!
