Thanks Ann - that makes sense. I've been reading descriptions of 'ground point', 'melted point', 'crease point' transistionals etc. but I think I was taking too simplistic a view.

Thanks - I thought hand-gathered marbles could be machine rounded? Yes it'd definitely a ground pontil on the top - very neatly done with two facets - one larger one and a slightly smaller one to follow the curve. The base has two very small indents a bit like a pair of closed brackets. Thanks

Not 100% - but it's near perfectly spherical - if it's handmade rather than just hand-gathered it's the neatest handmade I've seen in my limited experience.

Allies box. I think the contents are original to the box, but shout if any of them look out of place!

Struggling to get good photos of this one... 3/4" blue clear glass with a curled stream of bubbles like a tornado running through it. Machine made but with a very neat ground pontil at the top and two tiny indents like () at the bottom. Bought in the UK so possibly European, but obviously we get a lot of Amercan (and Asian) marbles too. Any info/thoughts appreciated.

Lauscha area - Seppenhutte in one form or another (factories burnt down...) mid 19th to mid 20th produced handmade and machine made In Steinach there was Eichomshutte (only know the name) In Haselbach there was Marienhutte (only know the name)

Thanks Ann - I think Alley is a strong contender, but I'm not sure I can get beyond 'possible'.

Lovely marble, but I suspect an identification is unlikely. There were at least five marble producers in Lauscha alone.

Came in a mixed lot of European and American marbles. The swirl structure reminded me of some WV transparents, but I can't rule out European. Probably one for the 'unidentified box'.

Thanks. I guess it could be any one of a number of WV makers with Alley most likely on numbers made, unless someone is seeing something distinctive that I'm missing (it's more than possible I can miss something )

I suppose olive or greenish/yellow/brown is the closest I can come to describing the colour. Any thoughts as to maker? Thanks

Finally found some small (17mm) ones - I keep finding shooters but not the little ones:

Deep purple and almost impossible to photograph! First one I've found in this colour. So dark you need a powerful backlight to follow the wire:

With solitaire sets the 'Made in' generally refers to where the board was made. Box of French Sparklers: This style of marbles frequently show up as part of French auction lots but very rarely in German lots. Winnie, has found the same thing in the wild.

I wish I knew where in France these were made. Some groups I've picked up have orange-peel others don't. I've no idea whether there were multiple factories or just quality control varied. Lovely marbles either way.
