Thanks for sharing that article, John. If eBay is considered an auction (maybe not to Kovels), Hansel picked up a painted China a few years back for a little over $10K on eBay so that beats the $7.,700.

The one thing I do know about newbies and the marble chat boards over the years is that they do not want to get involved in the crap that goes on. They then either just lurk and, hopefully, learn a little bit about the identification of marbles, marble history and the joy of collection, OR they just go away. The former is kind of okay but they don't ask questions (for fear of being dumped on) and the latter is a tragedy because there are very few venues where a newbie can learn about marble collecting. It has been this way the 11 years or so since I've been on the boards. It takes a strong individual to get involved and try to learn from the boards.

I am a member of the Texas Marble Club and Edna's show post was the first place I heard of the award. There was not input requested from the geneeral membeership of the Club that I am aware of. I also am curious what the criteria was for the initial recipients. Edna seemed to mention in one post that she would explain why Howard and Danny were chosen but I have not read anything further on the subject. So, why were they chosen? As a club member, I would think that an answer should be given. Also, when will they add to the list? At the next show maybe? I would appreciate reading some answers to the good questions previously asked. I think the award and Texas Hall of Fame is a good idea but why the silence from the officers of the Texas Club?

Rick is generally pretty honest on his dig finds. Can't imagine him putting in something that wasn't dug. You might email him and ask if there is a possibility it was somethign else.

Here's a picture I took of the two different MK cat's when Smitty was at the Tacoma show in summer 2008. The real St. Mary's on the left and the 2000 year run on the right. If you didn't have one of each in hand, it might be tough but seeing them side-by-side makes it pretty easy.

Looks like a neat one to me. The smaller pics have the orangeish cast but the larger ones show the red well.

I'm sorry to hear that. I had heard that he was in ill health. He will be missed, especially by his family.

The pink and peach colors are tough to tell in cat's-eyes (as well as slags) even if you have some side-by-side. Here's a pic of the Vitro (Anacortes) pink (left) and peach cat's-eyes for comparison.

Haven't seen a box like that - especially the shape. Any idea on the maker? No hints on the box itself, I assume.
