Steph
This is about 3/4". Not mine. Someone posted a question about it on Facebook. I feel like I should remember more things it could be.
Steph
I found these while browsing old pix, but I don't think this is a match.
Al Oregon
It's dirtier but the pattern looks pretty close to me.
stacyw
The covers in Steph's pic are knitted (using the short row technique). The one in Al's appears to be another construction, most likely crochet.
Steph
Stacy, I posted all the pix, but you're pointing out a difference I noticed. I just didn't know the terminology. I'm also curious about the size of the marbles in the box. .... and I still kinda sorta remember seeing covered marbles in one or more other settings. Tablecloth weights come to mind as a possibility. ... or some kind of weight .... was it drapes?

sissydear
That is funny. I was thinking the twine looked crocheted and the colored ones looked knitted.

hdesousa
I googled Milton Bradley Gift Balls If you add the word "First" in your search, more articles come up, this one with a different twist: http://books.google.com/books?id=kMcOAAAAYAAJ&lpg=PA79&ots=TQB7q42ifq&dq=milton%20bradley%20first%20gift%20balls&pg=PA79#v=onepage&q=milton%20bradley%20first%20gift%20balls&f=false
stacyw
That's what I meant too Edna - first post crochet - colored ones knitted. And the links are fascinating. They really point up the difference between the original "Kindergarten Movement" and the "Pre-school" of today.
