Newblue
This is definitely clay. It’s hard to get a measurement because it is so misshapen but the widest past is 35mm. Any ideas how old it is? Is there any value in this bad of condition?
Steph
I hear your assurance that it is clay. I still can't see that though. The high shine doesn't go with clay in my mind. It looks mineral. Normal clays are worth very little even in mint condition.
I'llhavethat1
The shine is throwing me off. Usually the glaze is on the outside and the innards are chalky/matte white (from what I've seen). Probably not valuable in that condition unless it turns out to be a petrified dinosaur egg or (or world's oldest gobstopper) or something
akroorka
This is a cool old marble and it may be some form of multi layered clay, it could be ancient or it could be mineral. It looks like it was fired/glazed and covered again and then fired/glazed once more—kind of an odd thing. The way that the layers are chipped off does look like it has been wrapped in several layers of clay of some sort. I played around with it on my photo editor and I have two questions. The first set of images shows a fissure and I would like to know what it looks like inside of the dark area that I highlighted The second set of images shows what appears to be some form of marking. I highlighted this as well. Nice images! Marble—On!!

I didn’t mean definitely clay, I should’ve said I believe it is as that is what I was told on another forum, but you guys seem smarter 😃. I know nothing, I am one week new to marble collecting. Also I can’t tell what the marking might be, if it is one. It appears much lighter on the next layer down also (to the right of where you were looking)
akroorka
Check this link out. If there are markings, it may be something else. I was refering to the outer chip that is still attached. It appears that some may be on the inner layer as well. https://southwestexplorers.com/what-is-an-indian-marble/ Marble--On!!!
Newblue
I’m feeling about ready to crack this open. I’m so curious to see if the inside is the same.

Newblue
Here it is…and it is NOT a dinosaur egg 😂. The outside cracked off easily. The inside isn’t cracking. I’ll keep working on it.
akroorka
Un---real--It has to be a mineral marble, or "Indian marble" the way that the layers are so rounded. Great images! Great Call Steph! Marble--On!!!
Newblue
Husband managed to split the inside piece. It was very hard. Even more intriguing. Probably a ball of asbestos ☠️ 😂. I’ll probably never know for sure what this “marble” was.

Marbleized
Whatever it is, it must have taken a lot of time to make it! A keeper for conversations. Someone is bound to know what it is. Marbleized
Maybe a local university with an archeology department might have students with time to look at it. So curious as to what it is . . .

I'llhavethat1
Interesting. With those views I'd go with "concretion". But yeah, someone with archeology background should be able to make the call
