Original Jackson Bag

I recently bought this bag of Jackson marbles but was just reading tonight that Playrite bought Jackson’s leftover bags and may have filled them with Playrite marbles. I hope the bag I got is Jackson’s and not Playrite. Playrite look very similar to Jackson marbles.  
 

The reason I bought it and thought that it’s all Jackson’s is the marble in the first photo. The orange blue marble at the top of the bag looks pretty much identical to one of the Jackson’s I already have. 
 

Although I guess if they’re Playrite than that won’t be too much of a bad thing as that’s the only company I don’t have any examples of that I’m aware of.

They're Jacksons. Pretty sure I know where this bag came from originally. A lady who's husband was Wilson Davis, founder of the Davis Marble company had a box of these in her basement years ago if I recall the story correctly (Ron?). The box was full of these mesh bags, new old stock, and Ron told her that people would love to buy them. He bought one, then took some to some shows and helped her sell some. She insisted that they were Davis marbles in them but they were all Jacksons. She even had an affidavit created and notarized that the contents were Davis marbles and included a copy with each sale because she didn't like people saying they were Jacksons, but they are Jacksons upon close inspection and comparison to known and dug Jackson examples. I bet, by the condition of this bag, that it came from that box. Nice bag! Many bags full like this got covered by concrete under the building standing on the location of the Jackson factory now. If only they knew what they would be worth.

They are 100% Jackson marbles in original Jackson bag.   I sold maybe the fist six of these found from a attic in Harrisville WV. That was over twenty years ago. Then the late Bruce Burkhart in about 2006 got a full case of 36 at a auction in north east WV. He sold those over the next three years. The late Mary Jane Wilson last owner of Playrite, in about 2002 brought out from her celler a box of 24. Which she said that she filled or packaged. She sold these over the next two years. They were filled with Jackson marbles. Only two people have seen or access to 100% for sure Playrite marbles that look different from Jacksons.  I have tried to see and or photograph these marbles for over ten years. But not yet happened. If it never happens we may never know 100% for sure what a Playrite swirl marble really looks like.  Playrite Co. did buy the remaining Jackson mesh bags and headers after Carrol Jackson went out of business. I also am sure that Playrite Co. also bought remaining Jackson marbles after Jackson went out of business. Likely that Mary Jane was not aware of that or remembered that. 

As of today only two people have had access to known for sure Playrite marbles.   Don't confuse these with the jobber Playtime.  

The story Cheese is talking about is Playrite Co., not Davis marble works.  The rest of his story is correct. 

There are two sizes of these Jackson mesh bags. A large one and a more rare smaller one.  The one above is the larger size one.  Put a black lighjt on the marbles.  These are rare and important bags for machine made marble history.

Oh yeah, Playwright not Davis. I came close but got one major detail wrong.

I got the bag today. Took the staples out very carefully to look at the marbles. They sure are pretty. I’ll probably display the bag next to the marbles as I def want to look at them. I’ll always keep the bag with the marbles. Definitely don’t want them to get separated. Thanks everyone for the awesome information.

Wow some nice mibs in there 👍thanks for showing us , can’t wait to see more of them close up . It will help many collectors find out if they got Jackson’s

Over half of them glow like crazy too. Probably the most amount of reactive to UV marbles out of any company if this bag is indicative of mostly what they made which it probably is.

Once you learn the ones which black light, these Jacksons are easy to pick out of swirls. They black light because they all have the same dirty white or dirty ivory Vitrolite glass. But the ones which do not glow can be tough to separate from several other WV swirl companies.

The real tricky part is that some of these exact marbles are attributed to Cairo, Jackson, Davis, AND Playwright. Even with dug examples from some of these locations matching and to compound matter, even dug cullet matching. I have theories on this but I'm still working on it. I saw the photos posted by the Playwright heir on facebook with the letter from playwright but they appear to be Jacksons FWIW.
