  1. Wasn't talking about marbles as ballast. Round stones as ballast. 1700s into the early 1800s. Don't know about before. Sorry, not making it up or fantasizing about it. I'm sure you wish I was.
  2. Not sure what you were kidding about. Ballast? Ships used stones (this size and up) for ballast for a long, long time. Smallish stones were preferred because it made it easier to secure the casks and crates of cargo and supplies (partially burying them in the ballast).
  3. Naw, was thinking of the first ones . . . "Atlanta-type" mibs. Mike's . . . look like real stone to me too. Ballast might be a good guess.
  4. ^^^I agree. I just can't get the words "Joseph Coat" out of my mouth when I look at any of these. Best I can do is "Joseph Ccccc .... Cccccc ....ccccc" Nope. I totally understand (and more-or-less agree) about the undercoat/no undercoat thing, but for me both onionskins & JCs are equally about the appearance and arrangement of the color streaks/stripes -- enough for me to be able to disregard the "no undercoat" issue on these. If they were mine they'd be onionskins, for sure. PS: I'd also like to see the term "end-of-day" disappear . . .
  5. That's what I'd call them. What's the alternative?
  6. It's in post # 1. I wish I could claim credit for finding it, Zig, but I'd never get away with it.
  7. Is there an actual gap in the dates, as suggested by the above posts? From 1929 to the mid 1930s? I know nothing about the tournaments, but it would make sense if there wern't any (major ones) in the aftermath of the crash.
  8. Uh . . . just checked the auction link and after seeing that it was a group sale, I would not even have been near the race track, much less in the running. I don't feel quite so crushed.
  9. I missed it???? It was on ebay and I missed it????? Oh boy . . .
  10. Oh, man, that black single ribbon has killed me.
  11. And the book text doesn't say why the term "English" is used. Must have something to do with their find spot for that one. Maybe.
  12. That top one sure looks like the one on the right in the book to me, Winnie -- I think some of yours resemble it too, Zig --
  13. That's what I was doing in my first post.
  14. Yes, I have. But I take offense at being grilled about it. Where did you hear that? Name them all? Brief synopsis of what was discussed with each person? Jeeeze louise. First, for reasons that should now be painfully obvious to any stray reader of this thread, I've been asked not to do exactly that. Second, even if I had not been asked to keep my conversations confidential, who I talk to and what I do with any information I may have or receive is my business, and my business only, until I choose otherwise. Same goes for all of you. Thirdly, I feel no obligation to "report" to anyone on this board. And, well, a lot of members here know perfectly well who the people are who are mambers of the dismal school I referred to. I don't care whether you buy the book or not, or read it or not, or learn anything or not. Up to you. It always is.
  15. No. Aw, Migbar, does this mean that you too are in the "If it's not known or owned by me it's worthless" school? I'd be sorry to hear that.
  16. Weird. Agree with Alan.
  17. Me too. The elves. And a couple of birds.
