Nice group of them. What is the size? I suppose 'swirling' could be used to describe the movement. Many I've seen actually shimmer when turned. Basically they are a resin/plastic and I'm sure molded so 'swirling' wouldn't necessarily be a manufacturing mode. David

Well, that's gotta be one helluva rare game! David

Female Marble....
david Chamberlain replied to richsantaclaus's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Dreadlocks.......right? Is she a twirler? I can understand Griff's interest; he kind of goes for the ugly female form as manifested recently at a Jabo run. I'll have it known that I was once cajoled into doing the drag bit myself at a Friday evening 4-H Camp Skit-Fest and actually got the most applause, of course, that could have been because my participation was over yet I'd already herald myself as a make-up artist in previous community theater productions so I had an edge. Rich, whisper 'Jerry' to the marble and see if she goes for a spin. David -
Well, about 25 cents each so the buyer can't complain too much considering they bought them with a zillion distancing excuses by the seller. A 'description' like that should send anyone in their right mind running for the hills. Notice all the hit marks on the Jabos; where are the heavy metals when you need them! Hey, everyone needs an object lesson. David Edit: Oh, I gotta have some of them blue seeds....

I'm pretty sure they're machine made. I really think they were meant to be buttons that never got drilled. Do yours have sort of a Tiger's Eye sheen? What colors did you get? They're kinda neat but I don't think they have ever gone anywhere in terms of marble collector esteem. Definitely a cut above wooden marbles though! I would suppose they're made by some molded process. David

For some reason it didn't give the full info. for the site but it appears to work anyway. If you manage a suspension of disbelief while watching it is even better. David

What A Devil Of A Marble
david Chamberlain replied to richsantaclaus's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Rich, As soon as my daughter told me that my grandson Jacob liked things with Skulls (My daughter is a Deadhead) I gave him that Skull marble you gave me. Thanks again.....David -
Hey Griff! You December B-Day guys should unionize for a more proportionate receipt of gifts what with Christmas having such a weighted effect. That guy Lloyd I swear gets better and better looking as he gets older. You know, he use to be real ugly! I plan on going out strong too. I expect we can count on you to go on a real gender bender today. Go Gal! David

One Can Always Hope!

Whoa! Aggie is currently being valued at almost a quarter million! Of course, this is a seriously delusional take.....David -
Champion can present a collector with numerous problems when it comes to Wire Pull IDing. I know of three Champion types that could confuse: (1) Whirlwinds that were made expressly for the House of Marbles in the 1980s, (2) "Stormy Weather" named by Charlie Stutsman and shown in his advertising and (3) a variety sometimes called Spaghetti (actually I think a Vitro marble garnered the same name). This is a magnificent marble. Rich (Like Peach-Melba) beyond compare. And definitely Alley's Blush Line. See West Virginia Marble Collectors' Club Newsletter Issue #30 Mar. 2010 with great article and pics by R. Shepherd, B. McCaleb, B. Burkhart & R. Anthony. David

One Can Always Hope!
david Chamberlain replied to MARBLEMISER's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Ah, how right you are. If only I knew how to paste & copy my response here and transfer it over to this guy's auction "Ask a Question" without tripping up along the way. Maybe in light of your mutual affection for this poor victim of the economy marble you might accomplish that for me. Don't though feel any obligation even though you evidently were responsible for passing along this poor little marble to someone so unworthy although I think there may still be hope for him if only he seeks counseling from the marble Gods. Anyway, I'm only trying to do the right thing here. David -

I want you to understand that my feelings as deeply felt as they are are truly purely platonic. David -

MarbleMiser, I would like to help you both out and if I might suggest maybe a trial separation would be the best course. Attempting to put a monetary value on your lifelong friend, Aggie, is not the way to his heart. I fear you are compounding problems in your relationship with Aggie. I would be willing to give you and Aggie both a break from the mutual suffering you are experiencing. I could foster the little guy for as long as necessary but would require you to seek counseling. I strongly discourage the idea of you easing Aggie into my home by your presence and if necessary would obtain a Restraining Order if you attempted to force yourself upon us. I am feeling a special kinship with Aggie; very possibly the beginning of a meaningful relationship. I don't really believe that you want money for your friend Aggie; that you truly want what is best for him and I can provide that. Please take this into consideration. And please tell Aggie that I love him. David -

Thought I'd give Baumann another plug here. In his 4th Edition Paul provides '54' pages to Carpet Bowls. It's actually quite amazing! Like a book in itself. David

What Do You Think Of This One?
david Chamberlain replied to MarbleClueless's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Let me tell you just how cool my Mom was about all my childhood stuff. I temporarily cut out of college during my Jr. year and thumbed to California (from New England no less in 1960). A couple years later after I had precipitously `married and begun buying a home in Pasadena what arrives in the mail but a few boxes of my personal things: Big Little Books, Classics Illustrated Comics, Baseball Glove, you name it. And in each box a listing of every item included! Can you ask for anything more? I'll tell you, when my Dad died in 1988 I took it upon myself to spend most of the year each year between then and when my Mom died(1994) caretaking for my mother only going back to CA for some quick R&R or to catch a marble show in Seattle, etc. Did sort of put the kabosh on my second marriage! My mother got the greatest kick out of hearing what I had turned marbles around for. David -
To put a specific label to what you have here it is referred to as a Crosslined Carpet Bowl and pretty standard size. Baumann states that "Crosslined bowls have three sets of equidistant parallel lines, variable in number, set at right angles to each other." Bowls with less than 9 lines per set and more than 13 are rarer. This one appears to have had some action before being honored by being put on a pedestal. David

It would be nice to have a straight on photograph of the pontil you've indicated that something or other has been done to. David

Before I ever came to marbles I was early on(1970s) strong into Depression Glass and collected too many of numerous objects: reamers, violin bottles, DG pattern glass, and so forth. My very first experience of that wonderful fiery glow was when I'd put a piece of milk glass(Sunkist reamer) up to the sun and catch it glinting off the edge or throughout the glass depending I guess on the degree of denseness of the milk in the glass (Don't take me seriously with that comment!). Then I discovered that a comparable glow would be evinced with other glass colors, black glass amethyst for example or blue delphite and so forth. It has been my experience that I've discovered this fiery glow to occur upon occasion in one or another marble from not just four or five marble companies but many marble companies. I'm going a bit far afield from the basic Moonie definition here but it appears that this hasn't inhibited others. Anyway, I fully appreciate the confusion that this matter has generated and I suppose I've contributed my share. Re. my flinties attribution I was and am trusting to Mike Johnson considered opinion on the subject for which I have a great deal of respect, Akro probably more than any other marble company being his baby. Bogard Catseye Marbles
david Chamberlain replied to Poplarhead's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
You are exactly right. The Black with white and the Orange with white are relatively common but the Black & Orange w/white based on a limited statistical tote with ten 50 count bags I did are rather uncommon. I named them Halloween Marbles. See my article on C.E. BOGARD at joemarbles.com. Had fun putting this article together. David
