Jabo, The Microsoft Of The Future
Scoop replied to psia-antique's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Man..... All this stuff is getting really OLD!!! It's funny... There was a time when I found the boards to be really boring, because all the talk was about machine made marbles, not handmades... It was such an exciting moment when talk of "real" antique marbles came up.... History repeats itself.... Unfortunately, apparently, good manners don't. Just as a group of seasoned collectors accepting a new collector (Alan Basinet) who may actually have the smarts to learn more than us older collectors, in a shorter period of time, and respecting that.... It seems the "Newer" "Old Timers" have an attitude problem with accepting change, or those who make it.... Build a bridge and get over it, people.... Life moves on, with you, or without you..... If you don't like talk about Jabos... Do what the die-hard handmade collectors have done, with grace... Ignore it. But.... You never know.... Crack that mind open a little and you may just see something new and learn to like it.... -
Poor Richard's Almanac- Jabo:a Classic 1-14-09
Scoop replied to psia-antique's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
I'd like to represent the quiet people.... I've seen some new (and old) Jabos that are fabulous!! I can also agree with... I've often felt the colors were "muddy" or not well combined... Jabos simply (Usually) aren't my favorites. But, I do have some that I've hand picked and I love them... I REALLY love a particular box of the new runs that was sent to me!!! They're marbles and I collect marbles... How do they "Rate" in my collection?? I never thought about it. The ones I like, I like.... Some people really like the ones I don't like..... BFD..... Does it make sense to try and name a "Greatest Machine Made Marble Maker?" ........ Why? OK, I agree that the author kinda exaggerated in a few spots... But, ya know.... Did it hurt anyone?? I'm sure, if she thought it was going to be taken so seriously, she'd probably have given it a lot more thought!!! ............................... But, heck......... Who Knew?? I know there's a lot of people ridiculing those who are investing in these runs... Why?? What's it to ya?? Years ago, I used to walk by rooms at marble shows and snicker at those crazy people wading through piles of machine made marbles!!! ROFLMAO!!! They really thought those damn things were gonna be worth something some day!!!! :icon_lmao: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Well, wasn't that joke on me!! ?? !! So, Folks... You do what you please... Enjoy what you like.... And those who laugh?? Just remember, the laugh may be on you.... If your cool with that, keep laughing. If you know better, you can be like me...... quiet....... As far as the "Investment" of these runs?? I see it as.......... Participation = $$..... Transportation, Room & Board = $$$$..... Profit = $ The experience of watching marbles being made, while enjoying friends, helping to keep a few people employed for just a little while longer and being able to wade through marbles, looking for your VERY favorite, while knowing that you had a part in their making......... = PRICELESS!! -
There was a thread for Champagne.... But, it wasn't really defined as a Color of the Month.... So... Here ya go!!!

It's funny... This brings up a memory of when we traded marbles as kids... I had a big blue Cat's Eye, that was the biggest one any of the kids at school had seen.... I have no idea what it measured. I just remember it was special because no one had a hand big enough to completely close over it.... 'Wish I knew where that was, now.......................

Most likely bubbles... Nope... Just fast... Remember, we're talkin' about a child's toy that was made in huge numbers.... The craftsmen were the "marble machines." End of cane marbles that didn't have color all the way through, slipped through, marbles with "stuff" in them that happened to get into the glass, went through (I know of one with a tack in it!!!....) As much as there are some that show up and display a worker's fabulous creativity and skill, there are thousands that were mass produced by guys who simply wanted to make a weeks pay.... Sometimes, the bubbles look really cool... Was that intended?? Who knows?? I'm thinkin' it's unlikely. They were made to play a game that damaged them. Not to "look cool."

O/t You Ain't Gonna Believe This One...

OMG!!! I've run some funky auctions, just to see if anyone would care.... Sometimes, it's a little curious who does!!! I've sold an unused 1936 plasterer's pocket log book for $26 (?...... Who knew??) I've sold a 2-piece sample box of Chiclets, that I sent to the Czech embassy in Tel Aviv.... I've sold a vintage black nylon slip to a man who likes to wear them.... He returned it, because it wasn't the right "texture." But, I think this one definitely trumps my efforts!!!! LOL :icon_lmao: -
I know it's not related to the above... But, check out this "oddity!!!" Akro Box (Credit Tom Reed for the link)

Mannnn, I agree with Ron... My sister & I were talking the other day about mercury and what fun we had with it, if a thermometer happen to break!! (And, you can clearly see the effect it had on me!!! :boggled: LOL) If that happened today, we'd have to move into a hotel while guys in full ventilated protective gear gutted the house!!! Then, there's the 3 years of welding I took in high school... All of the tables we worked on were asbestos... Now, they're talking about banning ALL cell phone use in a car, even if it's hands-free??? What's next? If a hands-free phone isn't safe, how safe is it to have a passenger that you may actually glance at, from time to time??? Maybe we should all build ourselves little cocoons from memory foam and just STAY there.... WHAT??? Memory foam emits toxic fumes???? WE'RE DOOMED!!!!!

WOW!! He's beautiful, Lou!! As long as we're all lookin' at pups... Don't forget... Alan still needs donations!!! (edit) Here's "Pearly Girl!!" PS. Lou, thanks SO much for giving a rescue a great "forever" home!!! :Cool_049:

In the message I got from ebay, auctions mentioning checks and money orders weren't supposed to be removed until 1/15.... it also said this..... They don't mention how to protect your $$$ from the Paypal idiots who will return it to a foreign buyer whose hit up 6 different sellers in the same freakin' week, though.... I wonder if Richard Branson (Virgin) would ever run up against ebay?? That would be cool!!! :Sad_headshake_tweetz:

Thanks so much for the post, Fisherman... That gave us a lot more insight than we had... There was a previous post about Larry's passing. Sad News It hadn't been moved to the memorial forum, yet. (We start them here to be seen, then move them, to be saved....) I'll let this one run for a while, then merge them before moving them. He will be terribly missed.... When I think of him, I keep coming back to the lyric.... "But, I always thought that I'd see you, one more time again......"

But Griff............ Heck, that's not even round!!! :Sad_headshake_tweetz: LOL -
Hey Big Guy!!!! Have a WONDERFUL day and great new year!!! I hope this is the year for all your dreams to come true!!!

Kevin, I posted about having a conversation with Larry Castle about Sulphides exploding... That would probably be because of the inclusion... But, I don't remember ever hearing about solid glass having that problem... That's not to say they don't. I just wanted to clarify, if your comment was based on my statement... I have seen some funky lookin' stuff that was presumed to be due to cooking... But, that was before contemporary marbles became as popular as they are now... A lot more tools, skill and knowledge are out there, now... Andrea, you say you were satisfied... What more can you tell us? If you were to see your marbles and not know they were cooked, would you suspect anything??

Oh Yeah..... Back in "The Day" that mighta hit a whopping 50 bucks!!!! LOL

Indiana Marble Show,who's Going?
Scoop replied to FISHSLAYERMARRBLEGRIFF's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Hey Griff, just think about how much your saving over last year with gas at $3.59 a gallon!!! It's a no-brainer, man!!! :rol: -
I could probably give you 2 or 3 reasons without even thinking too hard!!! :icon_lmao:

That name sounds very familiar, but I think it may just be a similarity, as I can't place why it's familiar. I did find this website.... Due Vetro Studio WOW!!! It sure looks nice!! I wonder what the success rate is on a job like that? Obviously, this one was a great success, but I've seen and heard of others that didn't turn out so well... I'd love to hold it and see how it looks in-hand... It brings around the old question... At what point of restoring something back into it's original state, does the restoration no longer effect it's value? And.... If the restoration is undetectible, is it relevant? That's a mental speed bump!!! LOL

Those look a lot more like the newer ones, Steph... Mannnn, I had those kickin' around for so long. I hope I can find them, now that I have a reason!!! In one of my recent fits of trying to clean out junk, I may have tossed 'em to Goodwill... I bought a board, cuz it was cheap and I liked it... It's very small and birdseye maple... Great for peewee display... I'll try to find 'em....
