Identification is the easy part for me.Handmade swirls are named,or identified, based on the structure in the marble,Its literal, with few exceptions Unlike,MOST of machine made names are based on color,or color combonations.Prime example is the superman, name. The reasons, there is a Peltier,Akro and even alley, supermen,is based soley on color. There are very few, machine made marble "names",based primarily,on structure. Desireability can only be determind by you. Rarety, should probably be put into the form of a poll. There are too many opinions,on what is rare, with NONE of them, based on,black and white facts.Just observations, and experiance. It would be nice if the records,of mintage, were available. There are,"guestamations"on numbers, but Im not aware any documentation. -
WELCOME BACK!!!!!!! Marble shop hotel?---Sound cool.Do you think there will be,guided trout fishing trips, available?Do you want some?I know this guy, that lives, just noth,that,,,,-----LOL Griff

Alrighty then,,,,,,,, -
MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM------Sausage!!!!!!!! Nah,I'd rather have a fish taco.Hold the taco part! I think its Ok to have differant perceptions of whats oxblood. I just dont like the word,True, assigned to,one, recent, definition. Its kind of forcing an opinion or definitoin. If anything should be labeled,True oxblood,I would think it should be based on the earliest "known". Id rather hear, akro oxblood, peltier oxblood, mfc oxblood, alley oxblood, jabo oxblood, ect. Just as long as ebay-oxblood doesnt get into the mix.Oh waite a minite, its already too late for that! For Sale:Akro, single pontil, transitional cloud, with purple aventurine oxblood,in mint condition. It only has 2 small chips, and 1 large one!-----BAH HA HA HA,,,,,,,,,,,

Its taken care of. Thanks,,Griff

We live in a funny world. Maybe I should give it another shot. Listing title:Rare Vintage Akro agate cullet, little johnson shaped. Of course, then someone looking for an outboard engine, would plobably turn me in!----LOL We are living in the era of the "politicaly correct". Dildoes are not accepted, but personal massagers are.You can teach a 4 year old what a penis is,but you cant sell anything that resembles one, reality tv,is not, drivers licenses for non english speaking citizens, big bonus checks for failures, cats loving dogs,,,,OOOOOOOHHHHHHHHH THE HUMANITY!!!!!!!!! -
Are there any more specifications, for it to be,"true oxblood",other than the microcrystilline copper? My next question would be,has there been any other,"oxbloods",contemporary, modern,or vintage, that meet the criteria,(or parts of the criteria, assuming its more than just the microcrystilline copper, and examination with a loop)? Im sticking with,"if it looks like dried blood"(litrarly),but its good to know these things.

Would You Call This Handmade A Tri-Stage?

Hi Sami, I consider, any tri-level marble rare, when relating to what I see in the general population of handmade.(at marble shows/ebay,out in the "wild"). As far as observing just, the tri-levels,this particular one is consider to be a "common" type.(at least thats what I hear and agree with, from other handmade people.) There are many types of tri-levels,with differant structure. Some have solid cores, for the center, some with single or double ribbons for the center, lattacinno center,4 band centers. I do not "know" that this type, with the white solid core center is most common.Just going on observations, over the years. There's no documentation,on the # of each type made,100 years ago. It could be that the ones that were most desireable, dissappeared into collections, makeing this type "appear" to be the most common, made. Either way,I would say,if your looking for tri-levels,more than likley, this is the type you would see, more often. Griff -

SOooooo, its one of the most common of the TRI-LEVELS?(stages) Ill have to just agree with you,I guess. Is there a full moon tonight.Im feeling a little onry,,,,, Gotta watch that "true" word. Its getting used pretty hard in the oxblood discussion,RIGHT NOW,,,,,,, -
Ok,Im not trying to start crap, but Im sure the fan is getting close. Who determined what "true oxblood "is? Why is the term, true oxblood, assigned to the formula, exclusively produce by akro/mfc? Did it get isolated to be,"true oxblood",because of unique chemical composition? Is it like Highlander,"there can be only one"? Just asking,,,, Griff
-
Heres my take on the whole ball of wax.Ill try to keep it short. 1-oxblood was a color, long before it ("oxblood") was assigned to a specific, color, with a specific, chemical composition,in the marble community. 2-The marble community, has given "oxblood",a more specific, definition.Generaly,it has to be some type of microcrystiline copper, based. Its kind of the "standard" that has been established in the marble community. 3-The use of the words,"true oxblood",can be confusing,to those who have used the term,in referance to a color, out side of the marble communty. There are other thing out there, that have differant definitions,in order to qualify as oxblood. To say, that only akro/mfc formulas of microcrystiline based oxblood,is a "true" oxblood,is to say,any other "oxblood" is illegitimite, based on the findings,of limited testing, and perception of what oxblood was in the first place. 4-There is more than one chemical composition, that creates,"oxblood",and there was oxblood,in glass, that predates akro/mfc. Its all in YOUR perception.Either way,its not that burnt red,or just shades of brown, too me. Im gonna stick with a literal interpretation of,"if it looks like dried blood, then its oxblood".Its kind of the whole point of the name. Dang it!---Now Im hungry for steak. I wonder if I got one of those, steroid enhanced, secretly aged, with co2,and the antibiotic kicker,Walmart, steaks in the freezer? Talked myself out of that one,,, "Honey, glab some fish out of the freezer"!!!!

I dont know the relevants of cars,to marbles.Let me have a reach, How about,Just because a polish sausage, looks like a hot dog, doesnt make it one. I see a clear separation between the levels.Makes it a tri level. Thats the whole point of useing a term,tri-stage/tri-level.It has 3 layers.Rarety, and desirability, comes after, the identification.I cant see,NOT calling it a tri-level,just because its not a highly desireable, design. IF ITS NOT A TRI LEVEL,THEN WHAT WOULD YOU CALL IT? You are more than likely to see an "opening",on a faceted hand made,But as Galen says,I cant remember seeing an opening on both ends,of a handmade, without something "done" to the marble. I think the dead give away,is that there is no surface texture. At least,I can not see any,in any of the photo's. -

He Marie,Go over to ebay, and do a search for personal massager. That stuff isnt listed in the adults only catagory. You can put a cornchip with the face of jesus on,but no hunk of glass, that resembles a penis. Its not even a "personal massager",just a piece of glass that resembles something we were taught about,in health class. Maybe they should ban all pictures of orchids, because they resemble a,,,,,,,, BAH HA HA HA HA HA !!!!!! Griff -

I would consider it a TRI-level,caged style. I use the term, level, because it more literal, for me. Caged style, even though some would require it to have a specific, number(or more)outer bands of color. Everyone I know would like to see a "clear" separation, and of course the wider the gap,the better. I think the intention for this marble, when it was made, was to have 2 layers of color, with the white, center core for the background.(It makes the "colors" stand out.) Think of it as when the gather for the marble was made. As far as the color goes, the white was picked up,folowed by the red and blue, and finaly the outer yellow. Of course, the FINAL results may vary, from the stretching of the cane, and shear. I usually use my perceptions of the intended structure, when deciding what to call, handmade swirls. How about a caged tri-level,with the low end of desireable structure? Oh crap, too many big word for me! Weak, caged tri-level,but theres realy nothing weak about it! -

I put a "penis shaped",piece of akro cullet on ebay once, just for the giggles. It was pulled within 10 minutes. -
Joe,you need to go a little deeper, with the investigative reporting. The Louisville Slugger, bat, marble case was a VERY POWERFUL,negotiating tool, when buying. "What do you mean, you wouldnt take $3 and a fish fillet for that,mint,3/4 golden rebel?" Im thinking I could get some "free" ones,if I make a case out of a gun stock! BAH HA HA HA HA!!!!!! Thats a GREAT report on the show,Joe.(as usual) Thanks again!!!!

Didnt do it.The bat case is in my truck. I kind of liked its negotiating power that it carries!!!!--"Just what do you mean, you wouldnt take $5 for that Guinea?"--LOL I think Ill hold onto the prototype. I realy didnt want to make "one",happy, while ticking off 15. All the nice comments about the bat were GREATLY appeciated.----It seems like it should be my next project, out back in the shop. Maybe limit the number made, and sign, date and # them?
