Alley was involved is some manner with almost every WV marble company. He was good friends with Berry Pink and Jack Pressman. Lots of history around L.E. Alley. I love the spruce collection, those big one's are real boglers. I should have held onto the other five I had, not as much aventurine but as you said everyone like's alley now. When I started collecting it was all about Christensen and German's hardly anyone collected Alley. I guess because they where so common then. Now try and find a nice black lutz or a good spruce, calig. or what have you ( not there ) Glad I held onto what I have now and regret selling what I did. Mostly not happy about the mib's I lost during the divorce. What a bummer, oh well no crying over spilt milk, The hunt goes on. Only the second alley red monochrome I've ever seen. nice flame pattern on it, have to wait for my new bulb's to get better pic's, most definitely alley, a classic pattern. A few more pistachio's a calligraphy some what I call lemon meringue's and a few dozen more common alley's next time I load my new pic's, hopefully w/ some new bulb's in the near future, getting tired of lugging my mib's and all my camera junk outside every time I take photo's. Posted August 20, 2020 Author Report Share Posted August 20, 2020 I have a friend with 2 red one's ( only color I've ever seen ) that's what he's always called them and about 6 month's ago I also seen one sold as an alley monochrome on E bay, also red. I'm curious as to what your name for them is ??? they're definitely alley, after looking at thousand's of alley's I know that you also would agree as to their origin. Do you have any in your collection ?? Not easy to spot unless you have a light on them. When I seen it I knew it was an alley just by the structure, had it for a long time before I learned what it was. What's your opinion Ron? I'll take some new better pic's all the way around the marble after I get a proper lighting setup and repost them on this thread. Sorry meant to post this in your quote Ron. wvrons Posted August 21, 2020 Report Share Posted August 21, 2020 The now named monochrome are Alley. They were sold as game marbles. I have went through a few thousand game marbles. You can find lots of swirl pattern in Alley game marbles and some flame patterns. I think they were the early Alley game marbles. They are in different colors, red and blue the most, some green,orange and yellow. But it takes a good light and eye to notice some of them. Game marbles is what put Alley over the top in marble production. At Pennsboro he had trouble making payroll. Employee's worked with no pay for a while. They had faith in him. He put cardboard inside his shoes to cover the holes. Then game marbles for Chinese checkers came on the scene. Alley and Jack Pressman became good friends. Alley had to move to St.Marys for a larger building to triple production fast. In 1937 Alley was producing 750,000 per day with four machines. Most of those were game marbles. In one month he would ship five railroad cars full of marbles, one million marbles. In 1938 Alley produced two million marbles per day, with ten machines. At 165 marbles per minute, then 220 per minute and then faster. Alley paid every dollar of back pay to his employees. So there are several swirled and flame pattern Alley Chinese checker marbles. When I did find the one I have I was using a super bright light, had a sore back and eaten half a bottle of ibuprofen. also out of the same 2 or three gallon's of gamer's I found a couple gumball's about 5 master solid av. and 1 or 2 solid akro ox, the Akro where easier to find , much bigger near 11/16's. No matter what alley you look @ they all seem to have the long swirling pattern distinctive to alley, that's why it was easy to pick them out of 50 marble's the exact same color.
