Scored this today at a market

I think this one is a real antique handmade millifoire

Hope anyone can help me out and can tell me more about it

Bought it for 5 dollar from an old man on the market

Good buy ? I think its worth a lot more

I can't really tell Brother?? They make the new stuff in much the same as the old, a real piece can get really spendy, by that I mean in the thousands $$ for some mint examples. I'm sure someone that knows a lot more about Millefiori will post, "Alan" has some newer pieces he's posted and seems pretty up on the subject so hopefully he'll see this thread ?? "Nice Piece Brother" I understand these are a lot of work and not just anybody can make them ?? You can see the construction, all separate individual different colored canes. I think the record is a piece of Clichy that went for at or over a hundred grand $100,000. Here's a piece for sale I googled real quick !! A pretty good size website to check outw/ new and antique examples, have fun diggin Brother !!

I also am not sure it is old as before 1960's. It is a paper weight not a marble. I see more of the millefiori as paper weights than I do marbles. The last one I bought was 2 inches and I paid $3.00. I thought that was cheap enough. But I tried for five years to sell it at marble shows for $5.00 with no luck. I gave it away to a kid at a marble show last year.

Not going to sell or guve it away , just like to know what i have here , a paper weigjt , thats very clear , millifoire also , but it was really a suprise that it lite up like this...the new modern ones dont do that and tbis one is not round at the top like the new and modern ones are that i saw , so a small chance this is a special one ?

Its a reasonably modern paperweight.  The canes are mass-produced types.  It was made in a bit of a hurry by a person with limited experience doing so.  I'd consider it a low-cost, mass produced weight intended to retail inexpensively in the last 3-4 decades.

I'd recommend reading a few paperweight books.  Look for used books.  There are many styles both vintage and modern.  I takes building a visual memory from thousands of photos with attribution over time.  Even some of the finest modern weights (e.g. Paul Stankard: ) can run $2,500 - $25,000).

Paperweight collecting is generally several steps up the cost ladder from marble collecting.

There are huge number of modern, low-cost weights made for gift shops etc.

Some more Paul Stankard eye candy:  https://www.thisiscolossal.com/2014/06/artistic-glass-paperweights-paul-stankard/

I may also learn something. Where did you find out that only the very old ones glow ?

I assumed it is old because it has a yellow / green glow just like the older type of german handmades , so i figurred they used the same type of glas ??

Here an example of a schrunken unionskinn that has the same yellow ish green glow

Not the very bright toxic green but different

So when i lighted the paper weight up....what i saw made me think it is old

I've never had the notion too collect in this area, but there are quite a few variations I have seen at some of the area antique malls I am a regular at. I'll have to snap some shots for this thread.

It is but doesn’t denote age. Many are Chinese in origin. You have to wonder how much the workers are paid when they ship it to the US and sell it for a few bucks. Slave labor comes to mind.

When in Winona yesterday, I saw a group of weights and among them was one that had a worn sticker on the bottom. Couldn't make anything out on it but it was red with gold trim (the sticker), similar to the stickers you will see on vintage Japanese figures and pieces. My phone was in the car and this was on the 3rd floor so no pics (sorry!), but any guesses on this one? Many colors involved with the floral design and the glass itself was "Hershey kiss" shaped.
