Wow, that's awesome, and complete too.  I imagine that was a prized possession and am thinking that key was likely put to good use over the years.

Need to see if it has a bale or not. Bales were added around 1933 if I remember right. These are early 1900’s. Solid pins.

That is simply amazing and it’s in such incredibly shape. Must have been bought and immediately forgotten about and then hidden in an attic for 100 years.

I guess a couple of my other rare items would be a molten glass feeder I dug at Vitro last year.

And the 2nd photo is what I’m sure is incredibly rare is glass sheets Cairo would have bought to feed into the marble machine that I dug at Cairo Novelty. The original polytetrafluoroethylene separator still intact. 

3rd photo set is also an incredibly rare boulder sized mint Akro marble that Roger Hardy dug at Akro. Akro hardly made any boulder sized mibs.

Nice Chris, the "sheets" are laminations of bulletproof glass made for WWII tanks by Vitrolite.

Wow, I had no idea. Any idea who made them? Corning maybe?

Vitrolite made them. I saved a lot of them from Cairo but when they dried out they came apart. Vitrolite made them for the war effort. After the war, they were sold as scrap cullet and Cairo bought it to make marbles.

Oh I guess I should have seen you said by Vitrolite. What do you mean they came apart? I haven’t had any problems with the vitrolite I dug there.

They were stacked, layers of glass with layers of that celluloid between them and glued. The celluloid is badly discolored and you can see how it deteriorated from the edges towards the middle as it was in the ground, until it finally came apart. Ron had the whole assembled unit. A little different shape but on an angle, as you can see the edges of your glass plates are also angled. In one pic you can see the many layers stacked together to make the viewer.

Hard to see in the pics, but the plates and the brass case are angled at maybe 45 degrees. I suspect to deflect impact somewhat, to make a straight hit into a glancing hit. I showed Ron the ones from Cairo, knowing what they were, and he verified. This pic shows it better:

My pleasure to show some detail of the contents of the Compendium Box. I've shown the reverse side of the game board which is a horse racing game. The other side is hand-tooled leather for chess/draughts and backgammon.

The cards are very ornate and in perfect condition. Im guessing Swiss from the Red Cross motif.

That would fit as Ayres imported the marbles from Germany so why not the cards from Europe too.

The pee wee marbles are very well made for later period swirls so I guess Ayres specified high quality for what must have been a quite up market product in Victorian times.

And the lock still works perfectly!!

thanks, Ric! i got her on ebay just over 20 years ago. i recently ran across the correspondence i exchanged with the seller, which i had printed. i didn't get much background on it, other than that she got the deer from a friend. looks like she's been crafted from an old bed post. that's all i got
