Great thread!

The first album that I ever purchased was The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour. The second was The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Are You Experienced.

We used to go as a group back in the day to the “Great Northern Bluegrass Festival”. I am not a big Country music fan but good “Fiddle” and “Banjo” Music always hits me hard.

 Johnny Cash? Who can resist?

I remember my first Led Zeppelin experience quite well. Probably eight grade. A friend of mine had an old stable in the back yard that his folks let him have gatherings together in the loft. Walking up the smoke filled steps, hearing the music cranked, my first question was who is this playing! I have been a huge fan ever since.

I listened to the Who, Steely Dan(the greatest hits album is killer), Steppenwolf, Jethro Tull (saw them three times in concert) Pink Floyd (“Run Like Hell” is a great Track—great lyrics too). The Talking Heads( “Stay up Late” is a great track) The Rolling Stones—nuff said( my wife saw them in concert) AC-DC, The list goes on. Who can forget “Foghat”? The Kaiser Chiefs, David Bowie, Queen, The Doors, Pearl Jam, ZZ Top, Nirvana(the best “unplugged” album ever)

I have Alexa play Beatles music while I cook, I like it all.Rusty Cage

Here are a few that I listen to often. The “Live at Pompeii” Album is a great one. One is a tribute to my Great Grandson, it just fits right in. Read the lyrics as you listen imho. I like live music, few can pull it off. The last one plays in my mind way too often these days. My Wife hates them—my Mini Cooper loves them—so do I and when I am alone I might just take a few more turns than necessary:confused-smileys-327:.

Nice selections Art, some of my favorites, Led Zeppelin was a big influence and part of my teenage years. Way to many singers and songs for me to post, guess I'll just pick on you for a while @akroorka    ... :) ...   I can almost remember the name of the producer who helped Johnny but can't put my finger on his name right now ??  Ah, now I remember "RicK Rubin" same producer that helped him reproduce the original "Nine inch Nails"  song "Hurt"  A masterful job in both instances    :rimshot:  Exact same transfer of lyrics and in the same order in both cases. Funny how the interpretation & acceptance of music changes for people not by the lyrics but in the manner it's sung, I'm a big fan of getting all the lyrics right. Maybe not so much when I was younger  ..   .. understanding the lyrics didn't matter so much as the music sounding good, good to me anyway !!

“After the Gold Rush” was my favorite album! I found the album in a store in Hong Kong in 1977 while in the Navy. Bootlegged, cost $1.50.

I bought an armload of bootleg cassettes in Singapore when I was there, one of the first and only things I remember doing after getting off the ship ....  image.png.2439dcbfd22b61ee99ab9899401bea9c.png

Boot was in Orlando, co-ed.

USS Buchanan DDG-14 76-79

USS Chicago CG-11 79-80

USS Prairie AD-15 1980

i was on the Prairie headed to Portland for the Rose Festival when MT ST Helen’s blew. We got diverted to Seattle, spent 3 days. Fell in love with it, the day I finished college in 85 we loaded up a u-haul and we moved to Seattle without jobs. Rented an apartment out of the paper, not really knowing where it was. It was on 2nd street across from the Seattle Center, didn’t sleep for a week due to the street noise. After 6months we moved into a house on Bainbridge Island near Fay Bainbridge park. Didn’t sleep for a week due to the silence.

I was a Machinist Mate also, man what a small world, you went to the exact same A school I did, cold, cold  & cold, I was more than happy to leave there. Went on 2 weeks leave directly from A school and the day after I got back to Alameda we left on Westpac

Qualified as 600lb and 1,200lb Engineroom Supervisor.

left as an E-5.

captains mast twice, once for telling a chief to KMA, once for getting tattoos in Hong Kong. Never liked having stupid people tell me what to do. Still don’t, became self-employed in 2007 after 20 years as an HVAC design engineer in the Bldg design industry.

In 1977 on Westpac, we did a unrep with the USS Shasta. Our aft boiler fuel pumps tripped and Had to do a breakaway. Shasta cut the cables before we could release, the cables wrapped around our port shaft, which was my engineroom. 85RPM to 0 in a heartbeat, the reduction gears jumped maybe 6”. Hit the main steam stop valve and booked it out of the space, never been so scared. We limped into Guam and spent two weeks there. Crazy times…

After that we monitored 2 ICBM launches from a sub. Was supposed to by 500yds from launch, it broke water about 200yds out, scared the crap out of everyone on deck.

crossed the equator for shellback ceremonies, I have pictures of the event. It was intense, the firehose shelighlies hurt like hell.

Crossed the equator as well and went through the shellback ceremonies, I have the pictures somewhere ?? Guess they don't allow the same old ceremony anymore, too many "rats" onboard !! Biggest hassle we had is when we anchored off Japan, no one was allowed any leave, first nuclear powered vessel since the war to visit Japan, we had Japanese junks throwing bottles at the ship as the incessantly circled it day and night yelling until we left.

Never had any issues in Yokuska Japan, even went to Fukuoka in China. They were happy to take our money.

The shellback ritual went woke, no abuse allowed. They saved a weeks galley garbage on a tarp on the aft deck we had to crawl thru. I had my shower sandals on my knees under my dungarees to keep from scraping them while crawling around the decks.

got soaked with a firehose on the bow while doing 25 knots.

It was the "Nuclear Powered" thing that caused the big hassle, I was really looking forward to seeing Japan ?

We had nuclear ASROCS onboard DDG-14, but nobody talked about them. I remember hearing about the testing, fire one and book at 30 knots in the opposite direction, the ship still took serious structural damage. Destroyers were expendable, all to save the carrier.
