akroorka
This is a tuff one for me. I notice the "pocket wear" and the nice flake as well. Nice hard glass here. This one is not finished very well (noit very round) and the "pontils" look to be the folded type. Transitionals are not in my area of expertise. Lets call in @Nantucketdink for an opinion here. @Alan could give us some help as well. @YasudaCollector may have some comments to give also. I think that this one is pre--the Japenese invasion of marbles into the good ole USA. I appreciate all opinions and hope to see some more. Marble--On!!
YasudaCollector
Ooh, I think this could be a very special find. It looks just like some transitionals that I saw in a Robert Block essay (totally out of round with a very crude, twisted pontil). In the article, it said that that hundreds were found in the 1960s in a Shanghai garbage dump, but that they were made much earlier (like 1920s or 1930s). Shiroaiko (a collector in Japan) says that she owns a few, and thinks they were made in Japan in the 1910s to the 1920s. I bet in the future we'll find out more information about these guys, but they're pretty mysterious. I've heard they are also pretty rare, (seeing one of them is almost like seeing a ghost). 3

I'llhavethat1
Based on how out of round it appears in the pics....I'd guess it was originally intended for something other than a marble. Jewelry or lamp finial or something

Mojo
Possible Grenier for sure The 9 And the pontil underneath on the southpole
I'llhavethat1
Hangathered for sure, but unless the pontil is ground/faceted and the marble is a lot more "round" than it looks in the pics I'd say No to Greiner for the OP
YasudaCollector
I feel like the marble in question still looks Japanese/Asian (but pretty old) since its all out of round and just plain gloppy for lack of better words. 🤣 I don't know if this helps, but I have heard the Chinese glass factories have produced beads for hundreds of years. Maybe, Chinese workshops tried to produce marbles, but they only knew how to produce beads well (so the marbles came out as just blobs of glass). Maybe @shiroaiko would have more info about this guy. 1
marblemanvintagemarbles
I emailed Bob block and he got back with me and has told me that the marble in question is not very valuable giving it a value of around $10. I will be putting it on my ebay for anyone interested
YasudaCollector
Darn that sucks 🫤It still looks like a really interesting piece. What's the name of your ebay store? If you want to sell it, I'd totally be interested.

YasudaCollector
Awesome, my dad just purchased it for me (he has the ebay account). Thank you so much for selling this guy, ever since I started collecting marbles, this style has been on my bucket list (even if it's only a ten dollar marble). 🙂 1 1
