In a drawer . . . I have been hording marbles for so long there are 1000s of them that I haven't seen in ages, which is awesome, because trying to find good marbles anywhere else around here has been impossible lately! My Father was a printer, and he always used to say, "What's the point of having a library full of books you've already read"? I feel pretty much the same way about marbles, and there are lots stashed around here that I haven't seen since the day I acquired them. 🙂

Those mibs really do look nice when you get a bunch of them together like that!

The "Score!" thread. Post your exciting finds here...

Wow, Joep, that's an awful lot of fun for six dollars! -
Thanks for the thoughts, Chad. I tend to believe that it's newer and that there are many more out there. And I am a little surprised I don't recall seeing others. If that is not the case, I would think it is a very valuable marble indeed - a prospect I find highly unlikely, possible sure, but with a likelihood akin to winning the big Powerball prize.

I'd guess that many retailers got marbles in bulk or stock boxes and sold them out of bins for pennies. Gift boxes were most likely reserved for special occasions, especially in the earlier days. There were probably gumball-like dispensers in the later years too. Many were also probably given away as promotional items or incentives too.

Okay, and I think I have it . . . drumroll please . . . It is . . . The super rare, HHTF, one of a kind, Transparent Blended Dragonfly Loaded with AV - the ebay listing is ready to go, $5,000 OBO. . . Nah . . . lol But I would like to figure out when it was made. I miss Duffy!

Is there really any reason to believe the tiny "J.P. Co." on the box (below right of "Marbles") does not stand for Jack Pressman Co.? You may need a good magnifier to see it, but it is there. lol Here's the thing, Ron, and it is entirely obvious to me. You have already forgotten more about marbles than most people will ever know. I know this because you're the one who made the Pressman connection and pointed the J.P. Co. mark out to me many years ago. Apparently, things are working exactly as you intended. 🙂

WoooHooo, Ron, I have never been so excited about a game marble in my life! lol

I hear you, it's a really nice pic but, man, it could have been glorious! You were sooooooo close!

Because of the striping pattern, I am thinking Vacor (Mexico) - not sure when or what though.

Seriously . . . ?

Pretty sure the jobber box was contracted and sold by Pressman, and many (not sure about all) of the boxes had Alley marbles in them. Pressman used quite a bit of Alley glass, Chiquita Kids Dinnerware, Pastry Sets, Tidledy WInks games, etc., all marketed and sold by Pressman.

As shown, these look JABO to me. And it could just be me, but I think your stand covers a little too much of the marble to get a good feel for the overall structure. It might not be as distracting if you shot from the top though.

And I am sure it wouldn't taste as good either!

Hey Chuck, I still haven't been able to find the color combination on a Sistersville but I certainly did find some Sistersville base color that is really close, even closer than some of the Taters, so I am going to go with you and call it a Sistersville from here on out - I like that idea better anyway. Thanks for making me take another look! 🙂

A nice find, especially on Akro Friday.

FWIW and AFAIK, Vitro moved from Vienna to Parkersburg in 1945. Because of glass and material shortages during wartime they produced many of the less expensive veneered marbles during their last years in Vienna. It seems that many of these marbles wound up in Conqueror and Victory mesh bags. I wonder if we are looking at very early Parkersburg Vitro production, from shortly after the war ended, when cardboard and plastic would become more available and the quality of their glass began to improve. Maybe these marbles are the precursors to, or beginnings of, the All Red lines.
-
@Al Oregon Have you seen marbles like the OP in any Vitro packaging?
-
It is a dandy marble and, at 3/4", it's a rare one.
-
I ate a few marbles when I was a kid - they look pretty cool on x-ray film. And I got 'em back a few days later.
-
I apparently have more Akro than I thought I did. I really need to open drawers once in a while. 🙂

I am now confident this is a newer MK, if you have any more information about this type, please let me know.
-
Thanks, I have a few of the AV Masters too - mine are not transparent. The more I look at and think about this marble, the more I think it might be a newer MK - something produced around the time of the Pixie Dusts, perhaps.
-
Thanks for the thought, the MK possibility crossed my mind too. I am pretty confident this is not the only one like it so, hopefully, someone will have seen one before and will know what it is.
