Great photos Edna! I am even more sorry that I couldn't make the show. Glad to get to see it. -
I have a very close match to that marble. I got it from Bubba it measures 3/4" exactly. Champion new old fashion.

Should I Have Waited 2 More Months For A Lower Price

I hate it when shops try to take advantage of you. You should post the exact location of that place. That way any of us within 5 or 9 hundred miles or so could stop by and tell them what we think when we are in the area. -
Happy Birthday Lou! I will also add my thanks.

Authentic (I.e. Playing) Marbles Are Still Being Hand Made.
flanco replied to hdesousa's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Great info and photos Edna. I just got a package from a friend in Knoxville. It has two marbles that look kind of like the "Atlanta Marbles" without the stars or crackle finish. He got them in Rugby, Tenn. They came with the usual "found while demolishing an old factory" story. He said he talked to some of the older men where he got them and they said "could be some of them Rolley Hole marbles. After seeing your photos I am sure that isn't even a possibility. I sure would like to make the tourney this September! -
The local paper ran a feature about Ozark's history. If you Google "Mozark Moments: The changing unchanging Ozarks" you will get a link to the story. Not much about marbles in the story, but they ran this photo with the story. Anyone know what game they would be playing? They seem to be shooting at some marbles on a built up square of dirt.

Back to the marbles, I was thinking I gotta get a new mailman! Nice marbles Edna.

WOW! Very nice group of marbles Ron. I also think they are getting better with each run. Some mighty nice drizzle as well.

Thanks for the reply. I am still having a hard time with the painted clay ID. I can be a real dummy sometimes. I have several red painted clays. They just don't look quite the same. This marble was fired after it was painted. It has a glaze that the others lack. It also has touch marks or eyes like the Bennington types. Not trying to argue, I am seriously trying to learn. Did they make painted clays with a fired on glaze? Or, am I not seeing this right? Probably would be easier in hand. Here are a couple of different angles and a group with some red painted clays.

Great thread!!! Thanks Akronmarbles, I have learned something today. When I first started collecting, I didn't think too much about these kinds of marbles. They were either "Benningtons" "Clay" or "Stone" with a "Lined Crockery" thrown in here and there. Haven't bought one in years, but have a bunch of them that I really like. They range in size from 7/16" for the small lined clays to just under 1 1/2" for the brown and green "bennie". The red one is 1". I have had these for 20+ years. Were they making fakes then? Or is the red one real????? Would really like your opinions.

Hi Howie. Welcome to the board. You have a pretty good start on a marble collection. Those are some nice marbles!

If the neighbors start telling you about a "homeless guy" sleeping under your mailbox, don't call the cops. It's me! Nice Mail!!! Now I have to clean the drool out of my keyboard.

Pretty disappointing after all that hype in the promos. Didn't get a very good look at any of the marbles. I have some marbles I would love to sell to those guys. I seriously doubt that they got $500 for those marbles. Only thing shows like that do is drive up the price of junk marbles.

Saw an ad for the History Channel program "American Pickers" last night. They are supposed to find some marbles next week. It airs on Monday night, if you want to see it. Don't know what kind or how many, but it might be interesting.

If you can get out of town with it! Very nice pelt!!!

Rich, isn't it also true that random bubbles may be achieved by adding a very small amount of baking soda to the hot glass.

Happy Birthday Al.

I took me 7 or 8 looks but I did it, I voted. Wish there was an "all of the above" category, would have voted day one. Interesting results and discussions. Nice box of marbles Edna!

Galen, what kind of game were those marbles used in? I have an old marble game that shoots a marble up a ramp and upside down and they drop into buckets. Glass marbles are a little heavy for this game, I always wondered if it came with wooden or some other kind of marble.
