  1. Supposedly Gino Biffany had some marbles labeled Canaries ... not necessarily in a company box ... maybe just in a compartment. Anyone know what those looked like?
  2. Check out the buy-sell-trade forum. Greenvwbug's sales are underway. These lots end Friday: http://marbleconnection.com/topic/21110-for-active-members-only/ http://marbleconnection.com/topic/21111-auction-for-active-members-only/
  3. My first make-out session was under a meteor shower. We lived just past the far edge of a suburb, so it was good viewing. Didn't know the meteor shower was going to happen. Nice surprise. Now I live next to an overcast lake. Would have to drive a ways to find a cow pasture to trespass on.
  4. While waiting for Canaries .... Opal Agates box -- are they Opal Agates inside? (I think I may have a better, non-Ebay photo of this box, so I might replace these pix when I find it.)
  5. Which marbles were the Canaries? Examples of Canaries or any of the other marbles on the list would be nice. Seen many of them separately in many threads. Could be fun to bring them all together.
  6. Hey everyone! Sparkler auctions/sales have started in the Buy-Sell-Trade forum. Don't miss 'em.
  7. All three are in the same lot? I'll start it out with $50.
  8. I learned the correct pronunciation when I called JABO -- called 'em just to hear how they pronounced their name. "Hello, this is JABO Vitro." Ohhhh ... I've been mispronouncing _both_ names, huh? Ooooops.
  9. Is the brown and white one which you are questioning? I'm pretty sure Alley on that one. That shade of green in the cat's eye makes me think Asian. But what I see of the core shape makes me uncertain.
  10. Sure there is ... at least I'd assume so. I hope someone else with money comes in and confirms ... I would say I want some but I already have some and am saving up to get a couple of your cat's eyes. But surely there are a lot of people who think their collection wouldn't be complete without examples of Mid Atlantics. No?
  11. All these years and I STILL say Vee-trow. Whenever I say it aloud I correct myself, but why do I keep saying Vee-trow instead of Vitt-row to begin with?
  12. How long has "I see what you did there" been around? Just saw 'em say it on Third Rock from the Sun. So it's been around since at least 1998. I thought it was a more recent figure of speech.
  13. In the category of strange concepts: old dishes with microwave-safe markings

    This Akro

Looks quite corky to me. I don't recognize it as an Akro combo but I sure wouldn't rule it out based on the apparent structure. Of course two people with a lot more Akro experience than I have are leaning Vacor so I'm not gonna argue hard. Did you check it underwater yet? That can sometimes help you sort out things like clear and colored areas inside.

    This Akro

Examining and photographing it underwater might reveal important clues about the structure.
  16. Wow. What he said. ^^ Nice pictures too. Save them for posterity. For documenting your find after the marbles have gone their separate ways.
  17. Berry Pink was from New Jersey. He worked for Morris Rosenthal, who was established in New York. (Can't remember if the Rosenthal family had also settled in New Jersey originally but I did know that once. ) Rosenthal was a marble jobber and Pink was deeply involved in that part of Rosenthal's business -- to the point that he joined the Alley company in the early 1930's. He appears to have brought his New York tastes along with him on this visits to West Virginia. (I seem to recall some unkind things were said about his tastes or attitudes.) By the mid-1930's Pink left Rosenthal and set up his own jobbering operation in New York City. Berry Pink Industries may have been selling Peltiers from the get go. I don't know if he was also still working with Alley at that time -- there was a lawsuit between him and Alley around that time -- but he was back to being on better terms with Alley later. In the late 1940's he bought Alley and turned it into Marble King. He hired Roger Howdyshell to be the plant manager (that's Beri Fox's father) to deal with the actual manufacturing over there in West Virginia and he stayed in New York handling sales and promotions. Soooo ... he liked New York and hung around there a lot of the time, but West Virginia (and Illinois) were where the marbles were being made and I don't think he had them shipped from there to New York for packaging. I think that was done in the same towns where they were manufactured. I'm pretty sure the "F.O.B." abbreviation has something to do with that -- letting people know that that's where their purchases would be shipped from.
