Jabo Is Now The Big Dog! Cac Is Not
lstmmrbls replied to psia-antique's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
I must add how refreshing it is to have such a nice open discussion with out anyone taking anything too personal and getting upset. I wonder if it was cheap clay or bennington types marbles Martin was trying to compete with, not the more expensive agates. And Bo I am afraid that the cost of the glass they use in the new Jabos runs keeps them from ever being cheap enough to be competitive with your local stores Vacors. I would bet they cost between 10-25Xs as much to make. -

Making a counter point-being as cheap as possible mattered a lot in the old days also. So much so that the major companies actually price fixed their jobber marbles. And most kids played with clay marbles not agates.(before the cheaper glass mibs came about) Agates were much too expensive for most kids. The glass marbles were made to mimic the very sought after Agates and be cheap enough for most kids to afford.(in nother words to replace clays not agates) Agates would remain the favorite choice as their shooters for many many years. There probably were not a lot of kids that could afford to snub other marbles in favor of real agate IMO.. Aren't marbles fun. -

Jabo Is Now The Big Dog! Cac Is Not
lstmmrbls replied to psia-antique's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
And even though many are pretty I will say that none of the new runs have yet to achieve the nice very bright distinct and solid colors of the early vintage marbles(CAC, Akro, Peltier,) they haven't come close with bright yellows reds and still can only only come up with a Milky white. And forget about a nice black. JMO, but I have nice examples from most every run. That is one of the things that can happen when you buy glass not necessarily made for a furnace and use it that way. They photo very well with flash and look great with a bright light but in normal light none achieve the nice bright colors of vintage mibs IMO. There really is no comparison IMO. And shouldn't be IMO. Peace,Galen -
Jabo Is Now The Big Dog! Cac Is Not

I have often wondered that also Steph. I don't think I have broken my promise to never post there. -
I have already seen many salted in groups of vintage marbles in twoe antique stores. And only a real collector would know they were in the bags. But they will make that bag sell to many uneducated folks thinking they are getting a beautiful vintage marble in the bag. I guess no one really cares about these folks.???????? And no Sue they are not reproductions, I think they actually qualify closer to Fakes. The old marbles were made to make kids happy. The new Jabos are made to make adults money. Useing Imported Art glass, never used in vintage machine made marbles.******* Made for adult collectors, Not ever done with vintage machine mades. Made in limited ammounts to make more valuable. Not quite like vintage, they made as many as they could that the kids liked. They are probably more like. Mccormicks, Winlocks or Scott Patricks IMO. I guess the only real similarity is that they were all made to put money in someones pockets!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jabo Is Now The Big Dog! Cac Is Not

I kinda like Black and White originals. If its 30 years old is it Vintage. The artist is kind of a nut case but I don't think that will ever make it be worth anything.. -
Jabo Is Now The Big Dog! Cac Is Not
lstmmrbls replied to psia-antique's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
I would never say what or why a person should collect. I was simply responding to the first post that stated that CACs are much more common than Jabos and comparing the two as being in the same class. To me thats like comparing beenie babies to Steiff, Bradford exchange to Meissen Franklin Mint to Real currency. Yes each have their collectors and I am sure they are proud of them. Thats great but lets not put them in the same class. They are nothing alike. Just as the new collectible jabos are only like the vintage marbles in they are round and glass. Collect what you like for sure. -

And actually Steve I am willing to bet they were a lot more Scientific at CAC than they are during these Jabo runs. -
And just think Steph, no one is signing them (LOL)

Or they just have a bunch of Jabos to sell and promote!!!! Some of them are actually pretty smart.Probably smarter than I am. They have kept it going and made a lot of money. But I do deeply wish none of these new runs had ever been made. But have excepted them for what they are. A modern collectible made with expensive art glass to attract collecters. They belong with vintage marbles as much as the chinese made reproductions belong with vintage antiques. Man if the Chinese had some of the same promoters for their crap as the New runs do they would really be selling. For some reason these collectibles are being pawned off as comparible to Vintage stuff. Only in this hobby would that be allowed to happen. Bring a modern tin toy reproduction to a vintage toy collecters show and see what happens. Or bring the new art glass recasts to a vintage glass show and try and sell them, I bet a lynching would be involved somewhere. But since these new collectibles are made on some old machines at a American plant and have had some over the top promotions many have come to accept them. oh well, I even have some, a few are good looking. But please do not ever compare them to vintage marbles,, That is an insult IMO. And please remember this is all JMO -
Jabo Is Now The Big Dog! Cac Is Not
lstmmrbls replied to psia-antique's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
What Jabo could possibly be rarer than a 3/4 CAC flame or A 3/4 CAC guinea? If your going to break it down to color combos I am sure if anyone bothered there are some extremely rare guines types (red and yellow)maybe 5 known)no white possibly less than 100 3/4+ mint 3 color flames probably 1-200 max. There are more than a million new Run Jabos already made. And most all are still around. Sure there were more CACs made but the ammount of mint examples of every type still available is just a fraction of the ammount of Rainbows made IMO. . And you are talking about a modern collectible made for collecters. Not a marble made for a kid to play with. Sure kids get to play with some of the ugly ones but that was not why the people invested in their production. It was to sell to Collecters!!!!!Two different beasts completely. Oh by the way there were less than 8 mint guines and no 3/4 guineas at the Vegas show. But there were Thousands of Rainbows. And some are pretty, but even putting them in the same area of collecting as CACs is rediculous IMO. And if you asked the right person at the show you could have gotten some rainbows for free. And if you wanted sets they were $30.oo for ten different types. I didn't see anyone giving away CACs -
Crazy price for a ruined partially backfilled Akro gift box IMO. guess someone really wanted it.

Very nice Rainbo!

Marble Heresy For Bill's Enjoyment
lstmmrbls replied to Steph's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
I also believe there are some Moss Agate(Ade) corkscrews. Although most appear to be pseudo corks. As do the marbles in that Ringer box. Like they were made during the refinement of the corkscrew making process.(I have heard it was before a center pin above the cup was added but that is conjecture) It is also a fact that Akro put different marbles in the same packaging. Usually it had to time. As they quit making one type and started another they occasionally recycled names and packaging. aren't marbles fun!!! -
How Much Clear Does It Take To Make It A Popeye
lstmmrbls replied to marblemansion's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Many of these boxes come from non-collectors and are original not backfilled IMO. I have owned several tins and boxes with original contents. They get a little damage from just opening a closing to show them off to the kids and grandkids. Or the original owner showing his special box he would never have played marbles with. Look at the bag. That has never had marbles in it. You think Hansel backfills all those boxes he has. Heck even 19th century solitaire games with all their original marbles are fairly common and in their original boxes. I just don't understand why one would find it so difficult to believe these are original contents It is only a few real collectors that would purchase and backfill and then sell. But back to the original question does it really matter. The marbles really sell themselves. Is there really any way to say what is or isn't. Who is going to say where the line is drawn and then everyone is still going to have their own opinion on a borderline mib. There isn't a whole lot of cut and dried black and white in this hobby, thats for sure. . -

I don't know about this box but it sure looks original to me. Why would they bother leaving a cracked marble in it if it was backfilled. I think that would be the first marble switched. I have seen many original Popeye boxes and the majority had popeye types in them. -
Steph makes a good point. I have seen 1933 ads and toy catalog pictures(drawings) for marble boxes that were not made after 1931. Peace,Galen

I believe its more of a case that they stopped making the swirl types when they went with the patches.

Marble Heresy For Bill's Enjoyment
lstmmrbls replied to Steph's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
I believe these are 3 Ringers like Craigs and the ones in some Ringer boxes. There is no clear and the base is actually slightly opalescent which is easy to see when backlighted. No way are they Aces IMO.
