Bring Kerosene Heaters To Canton
FISHSLAYERMARRBLEGRIFF replied to greg11's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Im in the middle of it!!!!!!!!! South central Pa. I have a few feet,,,,thats right,,,,FEET!From the last storm, and the current one, together.I have piled up snow,8 feet high, and am running out of space. All surrounding highways closed, governers orders. I will be heading out that way, tommorow,if there are any survivors. How about a show report? Many cancel?many leave? Hate to do the drive,if there isnt going to be anyone there. With the exception of Edna, and Weldon,if you cant handle 18 degrees, you aint gonna go ice fishing with me!!!----LOL---(Id put a nice heated bob house for them) -
THANKS!!!!! I just complete a group of 39 cases, made from cherry, red oak, white ouk,and some black walnut. There were ONLY,1,716,holes,not counting the 12 holes per case, for the hardware. That produced,5,five gallon buckets of mulch, for the flower beds---LOL The bat was a little tough to split down the middle.Come to think of it,the layout was a pain, locating hole was tricky, and drilling, out right sucked! Yes,there is a bowling pin,in process.Inside of the pin, there are 2 cylidrical cavities, about an 1&1/2 dia.Gonna come up with the solution,as I go."already have a plan. Oh yeah, theres a list of "outside the box",marble cases, out in the shop. I have a couple of book end, that were made in Gyuana, that are in the disassembly state.Strange, redish colored wood, alternating with a lighter wood.Almost has a mahogany look to it. Hey Duffy,If you want to split the room cost,I have reservation for thursday, and friday at Canton. I could have picked you up,on the way thru, but this next snow storm changed my TRAVEL plans.

Christense Agate Seam Survey Results
FISHSLAYERMARRBLEGRIFF replied to Kokoken's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
I was a little bored, and beat up from snow shoveling,so Ill put a little something to this. Just off of the top of my head,,,,, With the exception of "hand gathered",All machine made marbles have 2 cut lines.Im not talking about an illusion of being a cut line, but an actual, shear marks. The tricky part is if the shear mark is rolled, inside the marble, where it is no longer visable,in an opaque marble. This is controled by many factors, with the most influence coming from the lower shear plate, and the flow. In the lower shear plate, there are 2 "holes",and this shear plate moves back and forth, cutting off the "marble blanks".To give you a visual, picture a small piece of glass, shaped like a tootsie roll. Between the 2 holes in the bottom shear plate, there is a span of steal, that the glass is dragged across, for less than a second. This dragging action,is one of the controlling facters,of the placement,of the shear marks. The wider the steal is,between the 2 lower shear holes,= more drag, and with more drag, the seams are,"bent",closer together. For a visual, take the tootsie roll, and bend it. Thats just the beginng,of things that can influencs it. There many other things to consider. The temp.of the glass, higher temp= faster flow, gives you a lttle more "stacking" on top of the shear. Distance the glass blank tavels, before landing on the rollers. The diameter of the rollers, The radius of the "threads" on the rollers, The raidius of the holes in the lower shear plate, The diameter of the upper shear plate, The location of the shear, relative to the center of the glass stream, The distance the glass stream travels, before entering the shear, The speed of the shear,, and on and on and on,,,,,,,, Shorten the stream, and put a shear plate, with a gap of an 1/8 inch, instead of 1/4 to 1/2,might yield a 2 seam, striped opaque,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,at jabo,,,,,,,,,, sorry, got side tracked!!!--------LOL Griff -

I hear Griff is in the mood for a winter drive! -
I have to agree with what Bill said. The terms have changed a little over time. I used the cloud term for end of cane type onion skin, that the color, does not go to the pole. Not just missing color, near the pole, but actualy folded over to create what I want to call a "balloon" shape of the color, inside the marble. End of day would refer to a speckled or blotchy type of onion, were the colors are not, stretched, from pontil to pontil. The marble on the left,I would call an end of day,4 panel onionskin. The one on the right,I would call an end of day, unpaneled onionskin. There are many differant types of onion skin,"terms". End of day End of cane Paneled Unpaneled Submarine Cloud Lobed Left hand twist Aventurine Lutz Mica Its just a matter of giving it the name, and or combination of names that describes the marble.Use logic, like a check list. NO NO NO!!!There only 3 kinds of cake in my world.Cheese cake, german chocolate, and chocolate with peanut butter icing. I like my salmon cakes to be "cake less".Thats all fillet, and no fillers. I did the buffet thing.3 plates of sushi,2 crab leg pyramids, and 2 of off the hot bar. Hey Ron,the flash burns went away in 2 days.I thoughT I got a little tan,but it turned out to be dirt!-LOL.

THANKS,EVERYONE!!!!! Its been a good one,so far.My rule is if its in the middle of the week,I get to celebrate all week! Now where did I put that Baileys? Lets see, winter fishing could be a trout stream,2 blocks from my house,or 1 mile. Theres always the optional,5 hours north, salmon river,in NY,for steelhead and browns. Dont want to forget the third option,2and1/2,east to the coast. The stripers are in Atlantic,City. HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Too close to Christmas for me. -
Looks good.I was "on the fence" with that one. How big did the ends open up? Thats the only thing "I" dont care for, when polishing handmades. Some times the structure inside the marble,is just right, and there is only a small "window",where the pontils used to be. If you ever get a monster sized onionskin, thats hammered, you can get a realy unique marble out of it.Many times, there is an inner core, with color, that you can reveal,by taking off,all of the outer color.
