Alley made two different types or style of childrens dishes, one named Chiquita and the other was Orphanie Annie. Some people still list and say these were made by Akro. But is has been well proved that they were made by Alley at Pennsboro and St.Marys sites. Proved by,found digging, Alley paper documents, workers at both locations, etc. The Chiquita dishes or sets are not real difficult to find, the orpah annie dishes or esecially sets are rare to see. The most difficult thing to find is a Chiquita boxed set that contains the plastic silverware that was included with some sets (which i have). The most rare is finding a Chiquita set with the silverware and a tablecloth. I know from the family and past Alley workers that there was a plastic Chiquita tablecloth with some of the sets. I am still looking for that. Now i have give some more away but maybe someone else will find one someday. Both boxed sets of dishes came in different sizes or number of dishes included in the box. Alley also made many of the glass cups that were in the old Tiddley Winks game sets. These were clear, opaqued swirled with marble colors, some translucent or transparent colored glass. As before Alley made glass moon balls, radio antenna insulators, glass animal figures. Etc,Etc. Fenton Glass has never had a marble machine or made any marbles. They have supplied Fenton cullet to companies to make marbles for them to sell,in the past and recently with Marble King. Fenton has always been a major supplier of cullet to Jabo and most of the old WV marble companies.

I haven't sent anything free,if i didn't even have a full name. What is the shipping address ? Is someone stirring the pot ? It was almost down to a simmer,no fear the boil will come back with heat. Another book,GREAT,i will be looking hard for it at the WVMCC show. Put me on the list for one. I do not own a marble book that has not been a useful aid for me. Congratulations to anyone and all who has ever attempted and completed any marble book. -

Just Curious Question For Ya

Once again, there is no guarantee which i know of for, colors, pattern, numbers, etc, colors might be planned but may not happen,or in any certian order or pattern. What you put in is not always what hits the rollers. The only guarantee is that everyone will give it their best effort. This most recent run yesterday, several colors were added to a certian base glass, but they never showed up,except inside the marbles. When the marble was broke in half, there were the colors, all inside. Major efforts was done to change this but it would not coperate. This run had great marbles as you will see,but my point is that runs cannot be predicted from start to finish,so no guarantee has been offered from anyone that i know of who has been involved with any of the special runs. There are to many variables involved, utilities, personel, equipment, supplies, etc. No run that i know of went as planned from start to finish. Go Griff,i hope that i am avialable, can help somehow, push a rod, sweep, move drums, pad marbles, fill crucibles, gofer, just be a part of it,or invest if possible. -

2008 Jabo Classics: The Experimentals

I think Triker said it well. I got mine out of the mail box, started reading while standing up and could not put it down. Then when i found the last page,i sat down. Lots of work, research, time and effort again in another book for the benfit of marble collectors. Just wait and try to find ,buy,or pry one of these away from someone, ten years (or less) from now, good luck. I know the headaches, sleepless nights, deadlines, etc, the list is long. THANK YOU To Steve and Elizabeth. -
Like i said share cost varies. They have been from $500.00 - $3000.00 -$5000.00 up to maybe $9000.00 and in between, per share. Each run is different in lots of ways. No two alike.

West Virginia Marble Collectors Club Show

Thank You Edna and Weldon, but i hope you already know that. This is a example of what it takes to keep these marble shows going from one year to the next. It takes work at home base for the shows but collectors also have to put effort out and sometimes go out of their normal way to support a show. Plus the effort of either or both is not always rewarded. But maybe it will be NEXT YEAR. -
Most investors are invited to invest in or attend a run. The investor knows the cost and most details or plans for the run. But as i said no guarantee of how many marbles or what quality, just a equal share of the end product, same as the other equal share holders. People have and do ask to become a investor in a run. Each run, each group, each human is a little different,so this is general but not exact for each seperate run. If the word is out that someone may be interested, there is a good chance that they will get a chance to decide. If not, find someone to give you a helping hand to the people doing the run. They may or may not have space or shares avialable. Not easy to answer some questions because each run is different and in several ways. People have said these runs are the same, the marbles are the same, but it is not true. If there was no change, all the same, why would there be excitement. If they were the same it would be boring and finished a long time ago. Hopefully each run, group, does, learns or finds something new, different and improves over the run before it. Otherwise it is all the same, boring and done. Why would any marble collector not support (however possible) making marbles in the USA.

Thanks for the suggestions and they are appreciated. No bashing here just good questions, comments and suggestions. We need this to improve and move forward when possible. A few answers,I was not aware that any of the hotels near Rt50-I77 had conference rooms or one large enough for our needs. Officers are currently checking details of other hotels that may fit our need. A lot of these show items HAVE to be done a year in advance. The flyer or ad will be in the bulletin board as always, but we cannot do it weekly at $80.00-$100.00 per week. For some years we did rent a large passenger van and gave tours of several old factory sites(a 10hr day,)also Fenton Glass and Jabo factory. But we didn't receive enough money back to cover the gasoline let alone the rental. Plus two days time of 3-4 members. Plus we only had 2-3 people go on the last offered tours. Most or all of the flyers this year are black and white, but we still paid for paper, printer ink, etc. Several handfuls were handed out at the last meeting,to go to different areas and counties. Speak to city of Vienna,of course,we never turn down help. If you need any answers, flyers, info etc, just contact any of the officers. I am sure Howard would probably even go with you and try again. I am also sure the group can use any volunteer here near the local area. None of us as all the answers but as a group maybe we can look. We did in the past and may at this show hand out questionairs of what you liked or didn't like and things to improve for the show. We stopped this for a couple years because we were not get any amount returned. The bottom line is we,like all, have limited funds to work within. If people do not attend the shows and hotels before the shows, they are not possible. We could use a few new officers and any volunteer, some of us may be getting stale. Some have held office since the begining. Some held two offices at once. Our vice president drives about 1 1/2-2hrs one way to attend meetings and help out. We have some great people but can use more. Good comments and this helps our goal of moving this show ahead and all marble collecting. Call, email or pm and i will answer or point you to someone who can put you or your suggestions to work if possible, after meeting discussions and a vote. Come to a club meeting. Come to the show. The annual club meeting is 5pm friday evening before the show day. Steve (Duffy)thanks for the help and support. His post comes from experience,he walked in those shoes. ATTEND AND SUPPORT A MARBLE SHOW someplace, when possible. Ron S. -
Mibcapper,who done that,in the picture ???????????

The cost to be a investor is different from one run to another. Because the cost of most runs is different. Because of the number of investors, amount and types of base glass, types of addatives, etc. Some people have split one investor share in different runs, but of course they split the marbles for one share. The dollar amounts, the number of shares or people, and amount of glass used and marbles produced are different with most runs. This is why it is difficult for me to understand how people can say, print,or lump a certian dollar figure or cost per marble on these special runs. Many things are different on each run, including expenses, any profit for the work and risk. Equipment breaks, things get mixed or added wrong, experiments fail,on and on. I don't know of any run where there was any guarantee of the outcome, profit or loss. I was and am HAPPY to have been included on some of the special runs. If the opportunity happens it is your decesion, and then its history good or bad. I don't know of any person forced into any run. Things change week to week or maybe day to day at Jabo, like most factories and lots of companies today. Even more now because today is a lot different than a few years ago. But this also brings some things about quicker than normal. At least right now, today, there is still new and more things in the future of Jabo,if it is a month,3 months,a year or more ??????????? More rabbits to come out of the Jabo hat.

West Virginia Marble Collectors Club Show

The club would very much like a sign on Grand Central Ave. But after lots of leg work we found out that was impossible due to Vienna regulations. We tried signs in the shopping center and was ask to remove them. We advertise in the weekly local trader flyer. We did advertise in the local newspaper but at $500.00+ for a single small ad, it was to much. We had people guest on local tv station, but no response. We spent a full day at the WV welcome center on I-77 Williamstown, last year, gave away marbles,no response. Members post flyers in three or four different counties. We have tried several forms af getting the notice out,but it is expensive and very time consuming. We are always open to any new suggestions. It is $2000.00 now or more, plus many hours of work and gasoline to put on this show and it is getting at the limit. People have to support the shows if they are to continue. We can always use volunteers. Pass the word and attend a show, any show. They all take hours of work and effort. 2009 WVMCC yearly dues are due by show time. You may have received a notice with your last newsletter. Thanks for your support. See you at the show !!!!!!!!! -

Griff,i may be able to help. -
This years show is May 9,2009. Show details are listed on this site. My latest info is that the rooms which the club had blocked for the show are all full. We would have liked to block more so marble people could be all together but there was also a large wedding party booked at this same time. We booked these rooms almost a year ahead. If you plan to attend and do not have a room reserved yet, call and check or get on the cancelation list. Last week any rooms blocked for the wedding party were to be released. My last info was that there is another hotel nearby that are taking reservations for these dates. Some people coming on wednesday and thru friday, the show day is saturday. There is a contest for the best Jabo display. With a (90yr old) wild cherry wood, handmade wall plaque to the winner. The contest is for display, information, etc not numbers of marbles. Also the usual childrens marble shooting tournament, and requires early sign up. We will have the 2009 club t shirts for sale along with the limited collector marble bags of marbles. Stop in and visit the club welcome and informatioon room. Hope to see some of you there. Since this is a very busy area for Parkersburg and Vienna, the club is looking at moving the show next year to better fit the clubs and collectors needs.

David click on the link in the first post-ebay Ravenswood Chinese Checker. It was one of the Ravenswood Novelty chinese checker box and marbles. -
Nice thread again. I have several marbles from all these sources, even Marlow ( even recently). The mans name with the Ravenswoods at Columbus and other shows was another Ron S. (not Ron Shaw). I purchased Ravenswoods from him regular for about 3-4 years. This is a great picture set of Ravenswoods, but there are many more and lots that was not in the 1987 find. I agree that Patrys marbles were not Ravenswoods. As you can see by these post that some Ravenswoods and Alley marbles are the same exact identical colors, patterns, etc. Ravenswood did make flames, but not in any large numbers and most are very close or the same as Alleys. Some Ravenswoods glow but more different color combinations of Alleys glow. Again, Alley was the first person to make a marble at Ravenswood Glass. While they were making raw batch glass, they used original Alley recipes. Later they used cullet and the marbles changed some. Some of the main cullet supplies were Ponds cold creme jars,Vitrolite tile,Fenton glass that glowed, hobnail, plus clear Fenton,Vitro marbles and cullet, and others. I still have some reservation or question about one or maybe two kinds of the 1987 find actually being made by Ravenswood. Marbles switched hands among companies and it may impossible to get any single company 100% correct. These companies produced a lot of marbles.

It was condition of the box. As Smitty knows,i would have been all over the box,but the condition is just to bad.
