I feed the squirrels in my back yard just about every night and about a month ago a very opportunistic owl started showing up around sunset, which is when I feed my squirrels 😏 She's beautiful. disco005 Posted March 3 Report Share Posted March 3 Thank you! I was really excited to see an owl in my backyard, I hear them all the time but rarely see them. She didn't seem bothered by me at all. When I was calling to the squirrels, I couldn't figure out why they didn't come running, then looked up and found this girl looking down at me, not bothered, so I backed up, went inside, got my camera and walked right back up to her. About 35 years ago I was in the kitchen with my youngest son teaching him bird calls. We lived at the time in an ancient Virgin woods. I was doing a a Cardinal call when all of a sudden, just outside the window, a Barred Owl Let loose--Big time--shivers up the spine for both of us, what a memory! Once learned, the trill of a Screetch Owl is very cool to hear. I love it. They will call back and forth until you give a Horned Owl hoot or three, then all is quite. Horned Owls prey on those little fellas. Cool stuff for sure. The Horned owls at least are setting up their breeding grounds and some may be nesting already. I always watch for Crows bunching up--they know what is up with birds of prey and they jump on any oppurtuntity to harrass them. I have seen them bug the heck out of an Eagle in the back fourty. Earlier this winter I watched a Coopers Hawk being harrased by a bunch of crows--He was not intimidated--he just wanted to eat one of them. I just watched a YouTube video of a Screetch Owl, how cute is that? Their whole body is involved in the trilling sound. I love it, I will be listening for them now. Yep, you nailed it, Jacksonville. We live near Beach/Hodges area. If you haven't been back since, I bet you wouldn't even recognize it. I lived on the West Side, Merrietta too be exact, right off the I-10 eastbound ramp. I bet my mom's old prefab home is still on the corner with it's fenced in yard. Had a tanish brick house on one side and an empty lot on the other (back in the day it used to be a Chevron gas station. Went to Joeseph Stillwell Jr high right up the road.
