  1. I've not seen a Cairo like the white-based one with orange and blue, top center. The others look okay to me. I also agree with Mon about the dark ones.
  2. I think it's an extraordinary example of a Classic marble.
  3. I'm thinking no on both counts.
  4. Beautiful marbles. I especialy like the first. The cap reminds me a little of an acorn's cap.
  5. I want to say Vitro and made for an oversized Chinese Checker game - I think I've seen one somewhere before.
  6. Nice find, Don! I'm really liking that first one. Thanks for sharing.
  7. Nice save, RIch! I can't imagine your customer is anything but elated with the outcome. How big was it when you started and how big is it now?
  8. Edna, it was getting to me too. And although I thought about it, I just didn't feel right about being the one to post here and move it from the top of the page. Thanks for doing so.

    Norland Marbles

Hey Mon, I agree the marbles in Al's box look Cairo (see post #9) but I got the impression Don was referring to the ones I posted . . .

    Norland Marbles

Thanks again for the thoughts, Don. One of the marble types does look Cairo pattern-wise, but the glass looks much better than the Cairos I'm familiar with, and I've seen quite a few. I've also seen quite a few Alleys, especially early ones, that I'd put straight in the Cairo box if I didn't know where they came from. On top of that, there's always a chance that Norland bought from multiple manufacturers and just packaged what they had so it could be a mixture. Heck man, the problem with boxes is that the marbles in any or all of them may not be original to the package, so who knows for sure. But at the moment, I'm still thinking Alley on these. Have you ever seen that "lavender" on a Cairo?

There were a couple of new ones for me in there too, Dani. Another tidbit: Further research indicates that Norland manufactured a bagatelle called "Beat-'Em-Out", which was selling for $1.49 in 1945.
  12. Thanks for the comments folks. I have to admit, I was pretty stoked when I saw the color and variety in this particular bag.

Cool, Al. Thanks for showing it. It looks like the marbles are different than those in my box. I'd guess Cairo on a bunch of yours. But is that a brushed patch upper right? If we have original marbles, it would seem they packaged a variety of makers in these boxes.
  14. This one's Buddy's now . . . And this one went to Junior . . . They're both big ones.

    Norland Marbles

Thanks a lot for the input, Don. I figured you might have some thoughts about these boxes and was hoping you'd comment. The bottom flap of the box reads, "NORLAND MFG. CORP., BROOKLYN 21, N.Y." and the top flap reads, "PLAY PACKAGE NO. 1445, Made In U.S.A.", so maybe not a department store? And here are a few closer photos. Dave, the first marbles you refer to are clear based with reddish-brown and VERY light blue/lavendar (nearly white) swirled in and on (They are quite different from the one you noted in the Champion bag I posted elsewhere). The ones in the top row of the first pic are "lady"-colored swirls on a green-blue transparent base, some have more clear (are lighter) than others. The ones in the middle row are clear-based with a little blue mixed in with white striping. The two below are blue and sea-foam green based with that distinctive "lady"-color swirling.
  16. Here's another bag I looked for a long time before finding recently . . .

I think Norland may have been a department store or something . . . I'm pretty sure the marbles are Alley.

Here's a box I hunted for a very long time . . . pretty HTF, based on my experience. I sure would like to see more examples, so please show 'em if you got 'em. Thanks.
  19. The framing came out great, Ron. They're really nice.
  20. WOW! I have seen a lot of Cat's Eyes with aventurine but never anything like that. Very cool, Winnie.
  21. There usually is. I think it will be the 7th (sat) this year. Of course, people usually show up a day or two earlier for room trading, etc.
