well dear friend ...
nope, my whopper is a genyuwine vacor sunset!
-
Roger, regarding your A to my Q ...
If you saw a marble above an inch which looked like it could be a Master, would the size have the power to make you say, "No, not master, gotta be something else"?
A monetary translation of the question would be something along the lines of, if you found a marble for sale tomorrow which looked totally like a sunburst, but it was 1.2" wide, how much would you pay for it?
If the seller was asking a price consistent with "too rare to value", would you think about paying it? Or would you walk away unless he came down to a, "this is interesting, I don't believe it's a Master, but it's still unusual" price?
Jane, sweet pink!

Though I hope I'll find more among the threads I haven't yet read, there aren't a lot of Master threads on the board. When they happen, a wide of assortment of examples might be put in the same thread. So, even though most of the categories below have nothing in them, they are keywords for some of the things you might see in the "Various examples" and "Picture gallery" threads.

Thought that rather than not post a pic I would post this piece of MM ephemera from 1933. Not that it has anything to do with the original question, but what the heck.........
Thanks John ... I've been waiting for you to choose when to show that card.
If I hadn't known you were the new owner it would have been posted weeks ago!

Yup, John had it. That's where I'd seen it before, his postcard of "the Master Marble House on the Enchanted Island", which he has now so nicely added here.
The pre-written note on the back says,
The drawing of the house says "Master Marbles Shop" on it. I guess you'd go into that bubbly glass building and buy your College Collection sets and who knows what all!Just visited the Master Marble House, and gee, it's sure a great sight. Just think, it took millions of marbles to build it! Masters are some marbles. Better get some so we can play when I get back home.
Talk about a hefty advertising budget! My next question is how long did the house of marbles stand?!

Is this the post you had in mind, The Master Marble/glass Show And Info Thread?
Did you happen to notice the shooter in n2marbles' bag? Not a clearie. Maybe a Sunburst, maybe not, but definitely not a clearie. The only non-clearie boulder I recall "seeing" in original packaging.
-
Elizabeth, following another line of thought, I was just wondering if you would have a pic of plain old banana cat's eyes in assorted colors you could add here?
The common cats are soooooooooooo hard to find pix of!
-
Oh...also, as I was looking at the few that I had, I was wondering why some of them the vanes met in the middle and some had a space in between.
I dunno. Maybe we could get a clue from the Mirro cookie press though?
I'd guess it has something to do with the shape of the spigot the colored glass comes out of. For instance, if there's an open x-shape, maybe that'd explain the connected vanes. But four unconnected little lines for the glass to stream out of would give four separate vanes? Could it be as simple as that?
-
Thanks for your numbers, John, and I'll try to find that thread.
What got me thinking about it today was the big 'un in n2marbles' 1933 world's fair bag. I was just looking at it, enjoying the original packaging, when wham all of a sudden I realized I was staring at a shooter.
I never noticed it before!
-
There's been some debate over large-sized Master's. I have no idea what the consensus opinion is on how big they got, or how common big ones were. Or what styles big ones were found in.
I would like to hear more about that.
-
This link has some pix of College Collection boxes from the fair.
This link has a rare bag from the fair. Note that it says, Visit Master's House of Marbles. . . . p.s. the bag has a shooter which looks like it could be of the sunburst variety!
Somewhere I've read a description of Master's House of Marbles. I could barely believe it when I read it. I really need to find that! Anyone here have it?

Just one note modularforms you showed this Marble King blister pack as from the 70's
I am editing my information
Marble King is still selling the same Blister Packs with no choking hazard warning on the front;
http://www.shop.marblekingusa.com/product....mp;categoryId=2
That's an interesting package. It does have the choking hazard warning, but it's not an extra sticker added on.
To the best of my understanding, the 1970's packages said "40 American Made Glass Marbles" in the lower left corner, and the white choking hazard sticker was placed over that.
The package I see at that link is practically identical to the 1970's packages, but it has the choking hazard warning down on the lower left where the 1970's packages said American Made.
So it appears that for awhile Marble King was selling modified 1970's packages, with the white sticker added on after the law changed in 1979. And now they've moved to Retro packages, in the 1970's style, but with the choking hazard warning built in.
And check it out, the retro packages have the "40 American Made Glass Marbles" statement back, but now it's on the belly of the little guy in the top right corner.
That's pretty cool.
Akro Stats, Cork Counts
in Archives
Posted
I'm trying to update my lists of interesting threads. One broken link once went to a thread called "Odd Akro". I had made a note beside the link saying it was about the direction of spin of a corkscrew but I don't remember what direction the Akro in question spun, so I don't know what was odd!
I figure if it was an interesting question then, it might be interesting now, so IS one direction of spin more common than another for corks?
If so, which one? And how much more common is it? What do your own samplings tell you?
60% of the small sample in my house spiral in what I think of as a clockwise fashion.
With a sample size as small as mine, 60% is pretty much the same as 50%, statistically speaking, so I can't draw a conclusion from my bunch.
