Reading your description of the Miller machine and its history is so much more interesting than any paragraph about it in a book! I've read it several times here and there, but the info just went in and out of my brain. Thanks!

So, it sounds like it just depended on the viscosity of the glass and whatever else added that was being used and maybe the temperature at the time. (?)
-
It sounds like the results of the marbles made on the Miller machine were single-stream swirls and then the rainbos were made on a different marble machine.

Always learning something new! Thanks everybody! Also thank you BerryB for letting me tack my pic up with your post!

Just wondering if this is the same kind of marble . . . whatever it is called now days. Waiting to find out the answer to your question. I didn't know it was controversial.

Oh, maybe I just needed to tinker around. π₯΄

Ha! Only a marble aficionado would think off seeing the roll-on glass ball for what it really was!!! π

Wow! I was just thinking the same thing about the museum! It is so helpful to see the marbles that are actually in the box since there were so much overlapping in machines and techniques used between companies, it seems. My favorite was the birthday card that seemed to come with marbles. It reminds me of the day when toy surprises that came with snacks (like Cracker Jacks) were really treasures to a kid.

Yes, a nice balance of "catness".

What is different between the Akro moonie and the CAC blue moon? Is it that the CAC has a bluer base? I guess my next search will be for an orange flintie (?). Thanks!

Great to get a confirmation! I think it is one of the most interesting marbles that I have. Lots to talk about. It even got my husband interested in marbles for a couple of minutes! Thanks!

I guess the blue spot comes from the way light shines through. There seems to be a variance in the transparency of the glass. So when you line the marble up to light in at a certain angle, you see a bluish area. I couldn't capture the yellowy orange glow which is not a strong one, but you can see a strong orange reflection on the cloth. The size is .63". I will have to look up that Peltier Acme Realer.

Akro for Sure--Ace, Perhaps Carnelian if I'm Lucky?

It does have a greenish glow! I didn't know that about Carnelians. Hurray! I found something somewhat sought after "in the wild". So exciting! Thanks! -

Hi Everyone, I need some help with a marble that I just got in a bag. I'm pretty sure it is an Akro corkscrew because it has that thready wispy white that the Popeye's have and the swirl of a corkscrew. But, I know it's not a Popeye because it only has one color. I've seen an Ace on "Marble Alan's Encyclopedia" with this wispy white base. The orange is somewhat reddish and rich and as your eyes go to the edges of the swirl the orange is lighter, more like orange, so it also looks kind of like the carnelian in the the encyclopedia. So I'm wondering if I may have gotten lucky, but I'm not one to bet in Vegas, so you know how that goes. Thanks.

Marble Vocabulary From The Past & From Other Countries
Marbleized replied to Steph's topic in Steph's Study Hall
The two that I remember were bombuchas (that word is the pidgin english in Hawaii for the word for "huge") and Peerees (not sure of the spelling--used to say it, not spell it) that many refer to clearies. I can't remember the others. I also remember that we used to have a lot of cat eyes and marble kings. I think our cat eyes came from Japan a lot of times. -

Cool. I love tabbies-- and not just because they have "M's" on their heads. π I'll see if I can find your thread. Thanks!

I wonder if Ronβs cat has a marble related name, too. Both my cats had names when I got them and I didnt have the heart to change them. Otherwise, I might have named my cats Peewee and Bombucha (what we called those large marbles in Hawaii). That would be an interesting post. To find out what marbles were called in different regions.

Oh, got distracted by the cat pic. Great akroware, too. The green, red, and white plate is my favorite--festive looking!
