If its old and valuable it is probably going to be copied. And I think Forger is the wrong term to use for someone that makes copies with no intent to pass them as the real deal. I happen to own and enjoy many CAC mimics. Blaming the makers helps remove the blame from the real criminals that pass fakes as originals. How many thousands of paintings are copied every year?? how many copies of old furniture are made every Year. They are even making exact copies of tin toys marble toyAre all these craftsmen, artists and companies Forgers? Not IMO. IMO Its nice to have these copies for the folks that can't afford the real deal. As I said earlier if you can't tell the difference buy something else.

I guess my reply would be if you can't tell the difference you probably should buy something else.(its that simple) I also think this is a completely different matter as to what name should be used for what marble.

How do you know anything old is actually old???? Comparing to known examples is usually a good start.

All wrong in these areas IMO.

On that guinea type marble you can see one color on top of another color in several areas. I have never seen that on a verified CAC Guinea.

The German types usually never have looping on the sides Here are some Germans The one on the right is German in similar colors(straight lines on the sides) And I have to say that marble screams contemporary to me. Wrong colors bad seams and terrible try at mimicking CAC S looping on the ends(a big problem with most fakes)It just takes a pair of scissors to make those seams.

Mark uses a titanium pen to sign and it is easily removed, And no Scott. I have never personally seen a 3/4" Striped Opaque although I sure wish I had one.

That size usually goes for 40- on the bay.

Navarres are Leightons and will have melted pontils(occasionally they show up with an extremely tiny pinpoint pontil without melting. The earliest German types(previously known as Leightons) have a ground(faceted pontil) MFCs usually have a nice tail and a long smooth cutoff. The Japanese types usually have an extremely rough(spider web like) cutoff area. I believe the others from the tiny 1/32" indent type to the various crease pinch etc cutoffs are German. I also believe there are a bunch of German handgathered slags(Transionals)that appear just like many American HG slags. The Melted pontils and ground pontils are actually handmades and not really transionals.(handgathered-machine rounded)Edit, now if we could just figure out where the so called Canadian types come from(although I am starting to think Germany) pontils

That was just an answer for post #13. For now I use it and do not find it unfair. Compared to any major auction house ebay still seems like a deal. What did folks do before Ebay? No one has to use them. It would be nice if there was an alternative but I know of none that compare.

Many many if not most antiques will bring a higher value if properly restored if they are damaged.

The crow types have actually been around much longer than 3 years.
