Jabo 1' Run Article From The Cleveland Plain Dealer
wvrons replied to psia-antique's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
I must have missed some of the dozens,of marble companies in OHIO. -
Yes,he scores again. Nice !
-
I have said it before. WARNING! WARNING! I had someone buy listed Alleys(more than once)for my own peace of mind. I was correct, they matched(exact)marbles in the wall rack at Dave McCulloghs office. Once a mistake,But,But,But.
-
I know she is there, and missed.
-
Ignorant,it must be a part of TX that i missed. Those above could be called pastel parrot's. Some of the smaller pastels have been called easter eggs. It is all just names, trying to pinpoint a certian marble. Over time and only time, will decide which name that collectors will attach permantely to a certian marble.
-
CAC cobra tank wash marble. That must be a first, wait until Dave M. heres that!
-
Agreed,a good thread. Parrots was a Vitro company name. I believe the other names Parakeet and Parrotlet are names used by collectors. This can depend on what part of the country you are in or how long you have been collecting. Like the name how it is pronouced,Vit row or vet row. Like Jay bow or Jaw bow. I think these two collectors names are understood to be a smaller size Parrot. Exact definations or terms are difficult with marbles. As there were so many variables in the process. Blaine Lemon used the word goal. Like the white not showing, but often times it did for different reasons. I also consider the ones with the white base showing as Parrots. But my goal, what i consider the better ones, are four colors and no white showing. For those who are WVMCC members there is a in depth article coming soon in the newsletter on this very topic. Also WVMCC memberships need renewed in May if you have not already done so. Or sign up today for the full year. Membership fees will have to go up sometime. So far they remain at the same rate as years ago when the club was formed. The WVMCC also needs articles submitted if the newsletter is to expand. It is your newsletter!

Where Oh Where Have My Berry Pinks Gone
wvrons replied to Ima_ddicted's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Made, filled, closed and sealed shut in WV. Traveled around for years still sealed and then back home again for the opening. The sealed box provided more than marbles. It provided some new info and different info for different people during the opening. -
I agree totally. I was just putting the correct info out for everyone. It has been posted and discusssed incorrect someplaces. Some people have a problem with anything that is done at Jabo. That is their choice and they are entitled to it. If they are going to put it in print,at least they should have correct information. Or the best they can get. It may not be what they assumed. I cannot understand why some thought this run should be The Jabo/Alox run. The past special runs of over two years were not called Jabo runs or Jabo/Joker,Jabo/Tribute/Jabo/Foxfire,etc. They were simply refered as the Joker run,the Tribute run, etc. This run was not done with a Jabo machine. It was a special run at Jabo but even more different than others. This run was a combination of some special Third Generation marble people, with the help of their friends. It may be hard for some to believe, but it is that simple. Some people have big imaginations, big sticks to stir the pot and lots of time to waste, with post,pm's,emails, phone calls, etc. As the Marble World Turns, tune in tommorow.
-
This is all very simple. No hidden agendas. Nancy and EVERYONE present agreeded with her, that for us,we would refer to this run of marbles as " The Third Generation Alox marbles". No one including Dave McCullogh, the Jabo employees or any of us considered Jabo in the name. If they are your marbles and in your possesion, you may refer to them as whatever you like. The same as any marble. Nancy Frier requested that someway she wanted to make marbles once again after 60+ on this machine. Her father is not in good health and she very much wanted to give him marbles, pictures and videos of this last Alox machine making marbles. About one year ago after several contacts were made,it was agreed that it could be done. Alox had direct contacts with Alley,Ravenswood,Master,Heaton and others. The major contacts that made it possible for Nancy's grandfather to get into the marble making business were Alley and Ravenswood people. The realatives of these people were invited to be part of the event. I was the lucky outsider, that was invited to take part. I did help Nancy with some bits of the past history. After much work and help Nancy was able to purchase the last Alox machine. After much discussion Dave McCullogh agreeded to take on the task to revive this old rusted machine. A little over one year ago Nancy delivered the machine to Jabo. The machine was disassembled, the rolls bead blasted, repairs made, etc. by different people. The rolls had and have holes in them, pits and the tips of the flights are wore bad. But after much work, worry,a lot of faith, the goal was achieved. April 26,2010 the last alox machine ran marbles from a Jabo furnace supplying the glass for a steady six to seven hours without any complaint. The glass did come from a Jabo furnace but EVERY single Third Generation Alox marble came down the Alox machine rolls once again. Most of the run was single color white opaque marbles. The longer the rolls ran the better the surface of the marbles were. We got more than the usual odd shapes of barbells, kisses, etc. Sometimes two or three of the marbles would overflow to the next one on the rolls. Thus causing the odd ones. This is because of the age and wear of the rolls. If the glass stream was to heavy or if the roll speed was slow, the marbles would overflow to the next flight of the rolls. Just one simple reason of many things we all learned from this machine. My shock was, just how slow this type machine actually ran. Being around the newer version machines, the Alox machine looked like it was in slow motion. A few timed counts were made and the Alox machine produced 88 per minute. The other newer machines were producing 168 per minute. The marbles were not produced just for the reason of sales. That was and still is the last concern of this group. We had a goal and we did it. For me,none of the marbles have the value of what i witnessed afterwards in Dave McCullogh's office. The marbles are nothing but a symbol of what was accomplished. Some of the marbles have been distributed and there has been request from others. I hope my good friend Nancy Frier does not object to me posting this information. But maybe it will stop or at least slow down some of the questions, misinformation, jealousness, tall tales or just plain out lies.

Those transparent base ones are difficult and some are impossible to pinpoint. Too many companies made the similar or same thing. But some are unique to only a certian Co. This one is difficult, looks like it maybe even tried to cork some. You need known examples to compare these transparent ones with.

A HAPPY ending to a nice story !!!!!!!!!! Thanks to Gail and Joe! One of many nice happenings during the WVMCC show. You had to be there. Lots of special awards and several days of hugs and SMILES. It was especially nice to see Lawrence Alley's grandson playing marbles on the floor with a youngster just getting into marbles. Someday he may realize who was helping him play marbles. It was a great time seeing old friends again and meeting more new ones. THANKS to all,for the work that made this possible. THANK YOU to everyone who supported it,without that there would be no get together.

David was right on with his first post. These red boxes almost always contain Champions and some have cat eyes. He is also correct about the shorter blue box having Ravenswood marbles most of the time. But as always there are exceptions, these boxes can contain a variety of anything. Because many times people take the Ravenswoods or whatever out of the box and replace them with whatever they have lots of or not fond of. The Buddy boxes were originally filled by Ravenswood. But many empty boxes left the factory after closing. Some of these have and still are being sold flat and empty, unused. Some have been filled with a wide variety, cats,MK's,Jabo's,Champs, etc. Again it is up to the seller and buyer for repersenting and knowing what the item is inside and out. If not positive then,it always has and will be buyer be aware. Different auctions describe things,as is or unknown, not sure, etc. But if a statement of,refund if not satisified,is with the item then that should happen. There can be,always has been greed, crooks,at any auction, anypace,by auctioneers and sellers. Just a fact of life, live and learn.

I am looking more forward to this show each day. For all kinds of reasons,LOL.

So sorry about your Aunt. Saturday may not be good but sunday will be! Have a safe trip. Stay in touch.

That car may be right at home here. How old is it? One of my 4wd pickups is a 1978. But it has mangaged to haul a lot of dirty marbles. Ask Bill M.(mibcapper)or Bruce(triker). I will give you my cell and home number if needed. Check your messages. Don't break the springs, hope you have decent tires,LOL. See you soon.

Ok guys,i am a friend with each of you (i hope). Ease up,take a deep breath, turn the thing off, this is a happy thread. If it doesn't work, fine then take it someplace off the boards. Many words mean different things and many can be taken different ways or misunderstood, and by more than one person.

Thanks Steph and Felica,Hi Bert, good to see you again, thanks for helping with this until i got back. Nancy will have a large book out this winter with all the history and details of the total Alox company from the start until today. She worked for her grandfather doing various jobs including packaging old Alox marbles. He started this company in 1919. Nancy was good enough to save large amounts of paper documentation from all angles. She has been good enough to share most with me over the past year. A lot of news and Alox marble history coming ahead. I will leave that up to Nancy or watch for the book. Alox marbles and toys will also be in a movie by Warner Brothers in the future. She has been very busy the past year or two. Along with the help of Mike Johnson. Some of the 3rd Generation Alox marbles,in time will be bagged sets with original vintage Alox headers. As usual there is a lot going on right now and ahead. Maybe Nancy will show up here later today. She is on her way home since 10pm and will need some sleep first. Another hint, there are only two bags left for sale with the original Alox header and containing the Paul Bunyan marbles. Nancy is the only contact for these. Lots of connections with Alox,Alley,Ravenswood,Heaton, and Master. All ahead in the book .

Special THANKS to devoted friends Felica and Bill for their concern and extra help around this.

A couple weeks ago,i was on my way home from a visit with my daughter, her husband and my grandaughters at Fort Mead Baltimore. When i got the phone call that Sarah had been attacked and mauled by a pit bull dog. They live on base, only a couple blocks from the school. Sarah helps the school crossing guard and while on her way home she was dragged to the ground and mauled by a loose pit bull. She had injury to her arm from the elbow up and into her shoulder. Fortunate that it was not her throat or face. A neighbor lady heard her screams and somehow got the dog away from Sarah. She was rushed to the ER and we were told infection could be a problem. Especially with dog bites. She was back to the doctors and ER a couple times for more treatment. Thursday night they were told that the infection may be worse. She went to John Hopkins friday, but it was not as bad as the doctors had thought. So the prayers, thoughts, well wishes here and everywhere were put to use. Thank You ALL seems small, but that is about all i can say. Sarah is home and trying to heal once again. Hopefully someday she can get past the nightmares, scars and all the trauma. THANK YOU from all the family. Ron S.

It has been a busy week. This is and the name of the run was The Third Generation Alox run. We did it April 26,2010,with the help of Jabo and Dave McCullogh,Richard Mcknight,Ronnie Ewers. Others present were Nancy Frier,Dave Stutsman,Frank(Alley grandson)and Ruby Sellers,Ruby,s brother Jim and myself. We had hopes that Rae Weekley could be there, but not possible. Her father owned and operated Ravenswood. Nancy wanted them present because of her grandfathers ties with those companies. This project has been in different stages for almost a year now. A second run is planned in the furture, with some more work being done on the rolls. More work ahead by Dave,Jim,Myself,Griff and etc. The machine ran for hours without any problem at all. My surprise was at just how much slower this type machine actually did run. I was used to the speed of the updated machines. The shear and rolls on the Alox machine seemed like they were in slow motion. This machine had not run for about 60+ years. It had sat outside in the elements many of those years. But with some help it came alive once again. When Nancy deliverd it to Jabo last may,Dave went to work on the disassemble. I took the rolls for bead blasting, and the reassemble and painting began. A few slight changes had to be made or repaired, bearings etc. Dave mounted a variable speed drive,3 phase electric motor to run it. Which was good, because the tips of the roll flights are wore. If the machine was fed to fast or the roll speed to slow the glass would climb the flights and make the barbell, dog bones, etc. We had several, three long spindels, barbells, kisses etc. but these pieces were also special. With more work on the rolls hopes are to lessen or maybe eliminate the orange peel. But many liked this affect. This will seperate the Third Generation Alox run from any others. Lots of pictures and videos were taken. There should be some on Joes Marbles Web before long. I am sure there will be more details posted ahead. Once the run was finished, there were lots of hugs and tears in the Jabo office. The group could not have been more happy. Nancy's father is not in good health and her goal was to run this machine one more time. Then present her father with some Third Generation Alox marbles. If only,he could have been there. I CANNOT THANK the Most WONDERFUL Nancy Frier enough THANKS for giving me this GREAT opportunity of having a small part in this machine made marble history. Plus the quality time of her company. Nancy and Dave S. spent the week here at my house. I did manage to get her around to visit some people and places. We visited Akro and Roger & Claudia,The West Virginia Glass museum,Fenton, the Oil,Gas museum and state history,Sammy Hogue made marbles for her,Cairo marble Festival, etc plus Jabo. A busy past week and another one ahead. THANK YOU Nanc Ron S.

Ravenswood Bags . . . Did You Guys See 'em?
wvrons replied to Steph's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Of course, it said Ravenswood. Thank You Rick !!! This is the largest find ever of these that i know of. I like the ones that have the Paul Bunyan in them. I have been lucky in the past years to get some of these for $10.00 each,as no one was sure what they were. Wish i could do it again, more people are aware of them, but i did get one at the Canton show for $15.00. Even $30.00 is cheap for a original mesh bag and Ravenswood marbles. Many of the marbles in these bags are the exact same as some Alleys. -
WOW ! This birthday can hang around for a while,it has been good. THANKs to all of you !!!!!!!!!
