Alley Agates- I get it now

Recommended Posts

I always was a little ho-hum about about alleys but I was goin' thru a junk jar today and found some. I started lookin' at them a little closer. Then I dug some out of my display and looked closer. Hey these are pretty nice. So I took their photo to show off. Caveat- they may not be all Alleys but that's what I'm callin' them. Anybody else got some to show off? Let's see 'em. Thanks

Ric; I guess we should just bump your thread. Nice Thanks

Bruce

There are all kinds of great threads in the archives . . .

Here are some newer Alleys from St. Mary's:

When you say "newer" how new do you mean? Thanks

Bruce

The last site of Alley production was in St. Mary's WV. I think they operated there for about 10 years prior to closing in the late 1940s. Sistersville was Alleys second site. It operated for about 2 years in the early 1930s.

And then there is the good ol' Alley "Spruce" .  Hard to believe that I almost left it off of my "10 coolest" list because I had just found out it was an Alley. Times, and tastes, change.  Sadly it persists in loading upside down,  as cool as it is, it does not defy gravity. Thanks

No, no,  you need to collect Akro and Peltier marbles. Alleys are just junk WV swirls. None of them can be separated. They are all the same. Alley never used aventurine intentional. Alley flames look nothing like CAC flames. Alley used cheap glass.  All dug Alley marbles are junk. They had to be bad in order to be discarded. I have never had a dug marble in my collection. Alleys first marbles were made at Sistersville WV. Alley made patch style marbles. Alley never made marbles over one inch size. Alley made children's dishes and flower pots for Akro.  Alley made glass gear shift or steering wheel spinner knobs. Alley burned down the factory at St.Marys WV.  Alley made marbles for a while in Europe. Alley made slags. Alley didn't make pee wee marbles. Alley's biggest money maker was his flame marbles. There are several or five or six Alley salesman sample sets. Alley put his name or company name on his marble packages.

That will depend on who you ask.   I know enough to get myself in trouble.

Leave the WV swirls for me  LOL !   More people need to collect Akro and Peltier.   I have been known to get a few Vitro and CAC.

Nice group there! I'm with Ron... nothing to see here... move along... nobody but us chickens, uh, alleys.

The common everyday Alley can be plain and ho-hum but when they wanted to make a marble, they really knew how. Nothing ho-hum about many of them.
