what's this one

I watched Stephen Bahr's video with Ron S. on Ravenswood for the 3rd or 4th time and I thought I recognized this one.  It's "wadded up" and has lotsa dips and dives, and coverage on the whole marble, but when I dug it out it doesn't quite work for a Ravenswood. It's right at 5/8ths, so too big. Not sure what to call it. I like it whatever it turns out to be.  Any Ideas? Thanks

Bruce

Beautiful marble! Just a question, are all Ravenswoods less than ⅝ "?

According to the Stephan Bahr/Ron S. video most Ravenswoods are less than 5/8ths. They occur larger but are much less common. I hope one of them will be along to clarify. Thanks

Thanks Ric!

Just to clarify, most (>50%) of Ravenswoods are under 5/8", I suspect the vast majority of marbles they sold in bulk were 9/16". But there are plenty of 5/8" Ravenswoods in boxes and bags. It also seems like many of the earlier batch glass marbles were on the smaller side compared to later production.

Just from what I have seen over 25 years. Ravenswood marbles sizes by percentage, 9/16=40% - 5/8=35% - 11/16= 10% - 3/4= 5 %- under 9/16= 5%  -- 100%.

I never actually sampled them, and I stand corrected. The 5% for error seems entirely reasonable too.

No correction, you have it correct. Quite a few are over 5/8. some are 11/16 and a rare few 3/4.  All just my best guess at what I have seen over 25 years. Ravenswood's were the first marble I went hunting for.

At the Fort Wayne IN show I just went through a plastic shoe box size tub full of WV swirls. There were at least 200-250 near 9/16 size swirls in there. At least 95% of those were Ravenswood. The majority were mixed WV swirl makers near 5/8 with a few 11/16 and maybe two 3/4 inch and two 7/8 inch.  I bought 41 of the 9/16 size Ravenswood's.  The largest number overall in the whole box were Alleys.

Sorry about the mis-statement. I have been after marbles for years, but it has only been recently that I began worrying about who made what so I am a rank beginner there.

So, back to the OP mib; my original assessment may have been correct, It is a Ravenswood, or is it something else and size just is not the reason?  Thanks

So, back to the OP mib . . .

The transparent swirls can be tough, especially the ones that are, essentially, slags. I'd probably stay with Alley. Transparent Ravenswoods are usually a bit more sparse. Regardless, it's nice batch-glass white swirl.
