I remeber Ryan at that show. He had assorted cullet in "snack size" bags" When I was looking through them he said not to worry and just pick. I cherry picked about a quart size bag. I did this as I was still only a newbie and didnt have many ways for color match. I tried to get as many of the smaller pieces. He charged by the bag. I wanted more bang for my buck. There were a few different kinds of colors that I wish could find the actual mibs. None of the cullet was of the exotic variety. I have a lot of pics from that time on 3x5 floppys. Unfortunately windows 7 doesnt recognize my reader. Need to find a driver..

The misconception on my post about Danny Turner wasnt that he may have/have not sold those kind of marbles but that he was first to use the phrase "exotic" in cac's.
-
I agree with "have that". These big handmades were works of art made to be displayed in the home. Doesnt matter size. Tenichically they are all orbs and sphere's. But when do they become works of art?
-
You shoulda asked at show Ric. You could have compared. I brought 4 pelt slags for show. Four different colors. Amber, baby blue, green and a true orange.

He lives up to his name. The mib is prob a Wilganowsky.

I just received a call that John Kinsler passed away last night. John was mainly a west coast presence but still went to some east coast shows. He almost slipped in helping me down the stairs at Amana a few years ago. He had been waiting for a liver transplant. After the Seatac show he had a stroke. RIP John.

sorry yes 14k. The hippo pic is the mib i'm referring too.

I was asked by Jeff Hale to post this: It was Danny Turner who first sold marbles called "exotic" these were very unusual striated guineas. he'd a few striped opaques that were fantastic as well.. actually for some of the old timers, who followed danny turners auctions,, Danny had sold some of the most incredible CAC's,, long before the He came up with the "Exotic" name. those examples had the features that are now refered to as 'exotics' .. When Danny's sales sored, , bingo, the name stuck for every strange or unusual Christensen agate out there.. then The first public appearance of them was led by Les Jones, at the Amana show, 1999. Less did not refer to them as 'exotics' in this first opertuinty.. the lesser quality examples went then Jones continued for about 6 months. untill as it seems he'd run his stock down in 2000.. I was in Amana at that time.. which were a big hit. then the better examples appeared at the columnbus show, then e-bay, Thelma's auctions,, then Art's as apparently Thelma's first went cheap but quickls rose, I personaly NAILED a few of the first auctions from thelma. , around 2002, finnaly another hit throughout all collector club meets, and that was the end of the whole supply.. that's to say,, supply from wholesale to retail.

A naked single razor ribbon sold years ago at auction that I beleve was over 40k.

Those are subs Greg. Those didnt emerge until 01. The better striped opaques appeared then too.

Bill had 3 solitaire sets on display. One had the original box for board and original box for the mibs. I think the mibs were 1". Biggest one I ever saw.

I say the year 2000 because that was the last year went to Columbus. Went to Vegas in '01. Wheaton villiage in 02-03. No shows shows in 04-06. Never met the Arts nor Thelma.
-
Time line for mine was that Les Jones aquired them in 2000 then he sold in Amana. At Columbus that same year I picked about 17 of them. Left over from Amana and even a couple cases he didnt even get to bring out. All stripe opaques. Some of mine have fractures and embeded dirt. Prices he had was what he was getting on ebay in brief time between june and august. As picking he just went by color and pattern, 50, 75, 100 etc. Thelma sold on ebay shortly after that. Her prices started small but quickly grew as word got out. I bought one of her last ones in '02.Estepp brought submarine types at the 03 Vegas show. I do not see no where near now being sold as the beginning. I know of a few ebay sellers that bought Les during same time have been selling a few. I believe what are seeing being sold now are from collectors that bought during that time and for some reason need to sell. I havent seen any new types emerge and sold since probably late 03. At Canton I saw very few for sale. I am at the point either put up evidence of fackery or shut up.

Orb boy, that is a gecko.

The room trading was great. There were about 50 or more rooms at peak time. Its always fun trying to find that special something. Many friends that I havent seen in many years I got to see again. Friday night is always slower as people want to pack. The actual show itself was very slow. Not many dealers. Not know why. Most people that usually set up but had open rooms during room trading didnt do the show. It also didnt help that there was another show that Roy Kaskee had going was same time.

On east coast many know it by a purple lanten. On west coast most know it by green goblin. Both names are correct.
-
All wrong. Not green lantern. No purple on green lanterns. Not green hornet. Green hornet has no yellow. gecko's are flaming dragons with black aventurine. Its has two names depending on who you talk to too. Some say its a purple lantern. Others here west coast call it a green goblin.

Not all exotics were mint. Some had fractures and imbedded dirt. They came in striped opaques, striped translucents, striped transparents, submarines, and possibly guineas. The exotic name got stuck on any really colorful cac whether it may have been a true exotic or not. Regardless of when found or even how long in a collection. Even before the find in 2000. Now people dont want to put that name on them. I bet that any collector that collected cac's even semi slightly bought some. Most probably still have some. Some people wont admit they they do. Bill's comment is correct. I bet he has some though. I might have a few. See me at a show? Look me up. I'm not hard to find. The circus marbles were passed off as cac's at beginning. They brought big prices. They ended up being German. A few color combos of German striped opaques can still bring good money. The circus and the blue/black come to mind.

West Virginians Storm California
clydetul62 replied to lstmmrbls's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
They may not like to move to the icey cold in Feb. By that time the Cali weather would spoil them. -
Very funny Burt. Did that make Shelby a crook for stealing them? Seriously, not trying to fan any flames. I dont have any dead horse to beat. I posted because we have been having a lot of newbies on the board lately and these havent been mentioned in a long time. I was hoping to bring to light an old scam that hopefully wont gain any momentum. Whoever won them will get a surprise when they find out they are practically worthless.

New scam on the "civil war" stars. Seems you buy a case, type up fake provenance. Then you get more money. If Shelby Foote had these in his civil war stuff. then he was a fool. http://cgi.ebay.com/VINTAGE-MARBLES-SHELBY-FOOTE-ESTATE-CIVIL-WAR-ERA-/390330431393?pt=Marbles&hash=item5ae181b7a1
