I don't have TV either and have had extended periods in my life without it. It can be liberating. But I am an early morning NPR junkie. I've made up for the no TV by in the past 2 years picking up frugally almost 500 movie DVDs. I know, a bit insane but a good movie is worth seeing over and over again. Later, David

O.K. you've got a good one there. Being semi-translucent(the matrix) is unusual but much more unusual is the size. I'd keep a watch on this one. The big ones in good shape are worth about $90 last I checked. David

I'd chock it up as extremely rare and Beri Pink worthy. Is the white semi-opaque? Usually the 1" examples are either solid opaque or transparent clear. I've always seen them as two types and one size but this definitely throws a curve. I may have seen one previously but I'm not sure. Does the color section have edge ridges; often the larger ones do or creases at the edge of the color almost like the colored section had been pushed into the marble as a later thought? Cool....David

Antique Marbles: Stone, Bennington, China, . . .

Mucho Mocha! David -
It does seem 'touch and go' a lot of the time with more unsaid than said and often that which has been said best left unsaid. I do not necessarily agree with what I just said because I'm inclined to pull out all the stops. It's those times when I fear that being vulnerable will play right into someone's hands who does not have the best of intentions towards me that I hold back. Silly is good and I try to offset some of my more heady comments with a bit of levity. I might not be getting the full import of your Post here but I do sympathize. David

I appreciate your detailed and considered answer to my "Why?" In retrospect I think my 'why' implied quite a bit more than just the mechanical challenge. More of the existential 'Why' as posed by the character played by Julian Sands in the movie "A Room With a View." I probably should have been more specific..... I wonder what Norbert is screaming to the world. David

It's a kick seeing all your frogs. I've had many over the years but never that many at once(maybe a half doz. or so). Yeah, you'd love some of the bowls that the frogs fit in. You could have marbles in water underneath and marbles on top at the same time doing something like complimentary colors or marble companies or whatever. David

Any idea why the Marc Capel Posts were Edited down to a single 's?' The examples that Alan showed on the other page of the chap with 20 years experience all seemed to have what I would have described as exceedingly sloppy execution when it came to finishing them off symmetrically at the pontil area. I've always found wide open pontils unattractive unless they were meant to be as some sort of element of the marble. Re. Norbert Geitner's 1"- sulphides I would like to ask him........"Why?" With that skill it's already obvious that you can climb mountains but why not channel it into something new and novel. Scary! Anyone would want an unusual sulphide that's under and inch. David

History.....It was at a time when about the only thing that seemed to be associated with aventurine was the Peltier white opaque w/green aventurine swirl. Later attributed to Alley Agate. Also not ever coming up with any Champions with aventurine and provenance to back it up. Do we know forsure who made it/these? Also I got some early on from that chap in New Jersey who was wheelchair confined and also had some responsibility for the NJ marble get togethers. He stipulated Peltier. That's about the extent of my take until convinced otherwise and I'm open to suggestion.....David

I dunno, if the DEA hears that I've got a stash of marbles are they going to automatically figure I'm also a pot head. I have this picture of my marbles scattered all over the place while those enforcement agents are wrecking the place looking for baggies. You may have let things out-of-the-bag with that corkscrewing 'twisting one up' photograph. David

I've always considered those Peltier but..... I wonder what Dave Mc would have to say. I have a few of them yet. Cool marble. David

What About Big One In Pic Cloud?????
david Chamberlain replied to venwood's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
My immediate thought was a large Vacor Guinea or from the House of Marbles. David -
On this subject try reading Webb, 2nd Edition Greenberg's Guide to Marbles (1994) Chapter 10 "Glass Machine-Made Marble Production pgs. 72-80. David

And Now For Something Completely Different
david Chamberlain replied to flanco's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Great story although somewhat sad and Bo's avatar has got to be one of the coolest going. It's a Mandelbrot Set, an iteration of an equation. You can literally get lost in them. David -

Ravenswood Double Ingot
david Chamberlain replied to Digswithstick's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Whoa! And as Steph says, "It made it into a bag!" And that is a Ravenswood marble thru-and-thru. Cool! Only at dig sites so this is a rarity. And usually at dig sites they will be kind of a slulged mess. David -
Amazing what Akro managed to get into some of those Popeyes. I don't think I've heard of a Popeye interior quite like the one you've got going there. Good Luck! David

What Happened At The Other Board?
david Chamberlain replied to BIBLEfreak's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Whoa! And I thought I was banned. Was thinking about trying for a trifecta what with Marble Mental, AAM and who's next! Of course with certain things going on there recently it could have been temporarily been shut down in a fit of pique. David -
Hi, I was going for an all time short response! And the "Yes!" was directed towards collectors paying a buck or two for marbles with small dings and touch marks. As for more damage it would have to be one I'd want for ID purposes but for the most part I strictly stay away from ANYTHING with damage and am somewhat embarrassed when any are found in my offerings unless I have clearly pointed it out either with a note affixed or a comment on the spot. I'm still embarrassed about a marble I had for the longest time that Clyde brought to my attention twice as having a significant defect! I have found that a massive pile of halfway decent marbles(meaning of interest) with varying degrees of condition laid out on the bed in your hotel room are regular bread and butter. Brian Estepp did this with some great stuff early on and as I recall his prices across the Board were something like $5 or $10 ea. I forget. Brian would refer to it as "feeding at the trough." I kid you not.... David

I would concur with Akrogather re. his posts in this thread. I do not see where he has dissed Dave Mc or Jabo in any comments and his tongue in cheek statements were immediately followed by a "Not!" which had already been used by another for equal effect. David

My Little Pile Of Pee Wees
david Chamberlain replied to Ally Opp's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
My most unusual Bennington was a pee wee that looked just like a double-ingot. Perfectly round, with a perfect seam all around and brown. David -
