Double check on those dates on any one of a number of the marble boards that have current information usually highlighted in a Thread at the top of the main page. I hope you aren't attempting to accomplish most of your IDing with POPULAR AMERICAN MARBLES because Schiffer sabotaged that book with their state-of-the-art photographic equipment that someone obviously didn't know how to operate. Even the authors of the book have disowned it! David

The pink and plum, of course, make that marble. David

Well, considering that there's nothing whatsoever subtle about a "lingering fart" then you're saying that it's fully in your face aventurine. You may have mixed up metaphors. Yeah Al, I thought I had it down. David

I'm going to have to take a closer look at my green ones. Is it subtle or real obvious? David

Hi Duffy, Not sure. My provenance is Mike and I have fully identified them as well. Mike dug them and they are the ones that appear in the Blue USA box. I think it's smaller that the regular ones as I recall. The ones you have are probably the ones that Alox put in the yellow mesh bags. They look very much like them and all of those were pretty much 5/8"-). Al would have this one zeroed in on but I'm 99.9% sure on them. You're going to love my comments re. the Master Box that Pavcraz has on eBay. I have to have an account to contact eBay I'm pretty sure. Maybe someone else can.....again! David

Wooden Master Marble Box
david Chamberlain replied to manddrakes's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
The bummer of it is that the box and contents are actually kinda neat but this fellows track record is legion so you really can't even trust your own eyes. There's a list somewhere in recent back pages where some trouble eBay monikers are clearly identified. Check it out. If I recall from the picture the marbles look right. That wouldn't necessarily be much of a problem. I could easily put together a dangerous box like this with cool Master marbles. Thinking deviously helps! Oh, and the Shooter is for real. I have them in two different sizes and two different colors....somewhere around ehere. They were made in Elkhart IN BY PRIDWIN INDUSTRIES. I forget the dat. I have it on an old marble list I made up in 1998. If you can imagine it I had an eight page, double column, single space listing(something like 300 items many I had in volume) of Marbles For Sale without any pictures and I actually sold from the list. It helps to have a way with words. If I have a marble in hand I can wax eloquent. Hey, it's nice to have at least one talent in life! I also strongly recommend the red-lining of words that you've fractured, disseminated or killed in one way or another. I live by it. It's not cheating. I still use Webster's. I don't use a Thessauris (See, I don't even know how to spell it!). I had to make that point again because not oo long ago I was upbraided as a suspicious user of a Thesauris (Got it wrong again). Just too lazy to check Webster's right now. It would have been especially brazen if he'd made the box Alley Agate Co. and included Alley Flames. I could do that one too......David -
Buy It Now 300 Thousand Dallors
david Chamberlain replied to manddrakes's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Anyone notice that they've dropped the opening bid from $100,000 to $10,000. If this isn't some colossal April Fools auction then this seller is still a believer in what he/she has. Only one day left to jump on these marbles! David -
Can't wrap my head around 1" marbles but with Dave McCullough's inspiration going into them at this point in his marble production I might have to revise my thoughts on the subject. David

Another possibility could be Ravenswood from the Hasting Pine Grove dig site but I'd lean towards Alox as well. Are they slightly smaller than 5/8"? David

Progressive Marble Color Thread
david Chamberlain replied to Alan's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
I think Alan's marble in Post #7 is a contemporary hand made. If it's a machine made I'll be flabbergasted. David -
I don't think so but I'm willing to revise my thoughts on the subject. David

New Marbles Listed As Vintage

They are rather jaw-dropping listings for anyone with even a smidgen of marble knowledge. David -
Chuck was and always will be remembered as a shining light in So. California marble circles. One of the last of the nice guys. So sorry to hear of your loss. His memory remains in the hearts of many.....David

Mountaineer Shooters Blister Pack
david Chamberlain replied to Columbusrockhound's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Actually Mike Johnson pegs them @ $15 to $25 per pkg. I have seen these pkgs. with the same marbles as are in the Bogard 50 poly pkgs.(See my article on Bogard at joemarbles.com). And it is highly possible that the pkgs. have a mix of two different company marbles in them but the black and orange ones have always been associated with Bogard. The more correctly formed cat's-eyes in the pkg. shown here are just like the ones in the Bogard 50 poly pkgs. but there were very few of them in the 10 bags I opened and did a statistical count on. With all that said, I'm still a little fuzzy about attribution. David -
New Marbles Listed As Vintage

On a separate note 'opinions' are not necessarily immutable truths and if they cannot survive a bit of criticism then they just might be more rickety than one might have supposed. I do not accept opinions on faith; I reserve that for my religious side with a willing suspension of disbelief. But with opinions expressed I do not employ a suspension of reason and critical intelligence - faculties that tell us that something is not necessarily the case because it is written down and repeated over and over again. When opinions take on the mantle of uncritical certitude than I know that literalism and fundamentalism have won the day. The axiom expressed here a few days ago or on another Board(I forget) that Opinions about Marbles are Good and Opinions about Opinions are Trouble is at the very least semantically unsound. David -

Penelope, I want to go along with you. You get to kick the left cheek while I'm kicking the right cheek. This woman's drivel drives me bonkers. David -
Off Topic...ck Out This Pic
david Chamberlain replied to duffy's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Hi Duffy, The 'Stars' are called Spiderwebs I think and the rectangular work is basically freehand. Maybe later I'll take a look in one of my quilt compendiums and get a clearer idea. I think you can get a decent price for the photograph but I've no idea what the quilt people are ringing in at for something like this. Now, if she was smiling.....David -
Is There A Name For This Design?
david Chamberlain replied to Kushtaka's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Hard to figure how the marble could be from 1890-1910 if as Kushtaka says the home was built in the 1850s and the marble(s) were found "in an area where there was no possible access to since the house was built." Of course we know about marbles falling through cracks and maybe even traveling with a mind of their own. Yet, I did read Carskadden and Gartley wrong and they do designate this glazed variety for the Later Period, so my error. I defer to Scott's knowledge. I really do not collect these. David -
Is There A Name For This Design?
david Chamberlain replied to Kushtaka's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
I believe these are intersecting parallel lines rather than a helix line which would be a continuous line. And they date to the 1846-1870 period. For its type it is common(according to Carskadden and Gartley) although that is exceedingly relative. Nice large example nonetheless and as good a jumping off point for collecting marbles as anything else. David -
For a while we were also thinking that these were European sparkler types. David

Mountaineer Shooters Blister Pack
david Chamberlain replied to Columbusrockhound's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
They're C.E. Bogard & Co. Cool packaging. The black one is considered the 'ringer.' Funny thing about these when they first surfaced back in the 1990s someone who was totally non-marbles but into Antiques & Collectibles had them advertised in 2 or 3 national Antique & Collectible publications @ $100 or more per pkg. I don't rightly recall the exact figure but it was absurdly high. Then not too long afterwards, as this often happens, they were being offed at $20+ per pkg. It really is kind of a neat packaging although rather stereotypical. I'd be a little bent about it if a native of West Virginia. I've a cpl. pkgs. kicking around here. I'd peg them at $35 ea. I think Mike Johnson in AMMM(2006) puts a price on them. David -

Another Great Collector Gone.......
david Chamberlain replied to zaboo's topic in Marble Friends Memorial
Dave was straight-up a top notch chap. The pride and joy of his marble collection were his Christensen Flames. There's an 'inset' photo of some of them at the beginning of the Christensen chapter in AMMM(2006). Just can't imagine marbles being the same without Dave around. David -
