Question On Cross Thru Cats
david Chamberlain replied to cat's eye jack's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Let me give you a little of my history with this category of cat's-eye marble. For starters, of course, these prices are somewhat dated but you can still make relative estimates. I have been selling a set of six different color combination with white x-thru in the 5/8" size for anywhere from $35 to $45+. It's nice having a set rather than just individual ones. I have only been able to get together a set of eight different(color combinations) of this marble type twice. I'm not sure where you found the value for the ones with transparent vanes but I can most definitely state that getting together a set of any of the above with all transparent vanes is well nigh next to impossible. I have one set of six different color combinations that have transparent vanes. So figure from that. I know that Marlow rated the transparent vane variety highly. Your ther obvious knowledgable person on this would be Pinx at Marble Mental. My extensive 87 photograph CAT'S-EYE SERIES at that website goes into some of these matters at length and you might go back through the pages there and take a look. Not sure myself as I'm banned at Marble Mental for having Posted Scott Patrick's Rap Sheet. Surprise, surprise! David P.S. One of my favorite sets and it's not a cross through at all but a straight 6 vane, 3 color, 3V but I have nine different color combinations, each in 1 inch and they are crystal clear with fine vanes. Absolutely killer! -
Well I suppose for someone who had not gained an appreciation and discriminating understanding of the differences amongst the numerous WV marble company swirls they could triple their collection by buying new foreign junk but there are among us many who have read the books, conversed with knowledgeable fellow collectors and handled WV swirls extensively such that we value them highly regardless of any shallow, misinformed and elitist opinions to the contrary. I like those metal tabs at the corner. What gets me is that Alley interloper(top of middle row). David -
Where Do They Come From??
david Chamberlain replied to MARBLEMISER's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Just the way this guy babbles on and on you know you're getting into deep do do no matter what he says. I can only imagine how hilarious it would be to reach an understanding if you were disappointed with what you received. Is there a funny farm somewhere where they grow types like this? David -
What I love about it is the red smearing. There's actually a remote possibility that it's for real but who would care........arrrgh, possibly a newbie! David

When it's round as opposed to having a paperweight bottom it gets kind of subjective as to value for the category chosen to represent it. Like, is it a marble or just a sphere? When you get beyond 3 inches I've always naturally consigned them to a category other than marbles. Beyond size though I think artistic integrity trumps anything else. David

And I want all those "worthless" West Virginia swirls. I thought Bob Block was the final word on that in his 1990s book when he would consign one West Virginia company after another to the dumpster with that deathly phrase "little or no value." David

Yeah, the newer pink had kind of a chrome look to it and it felt different.....heavier. David

I don't know....sounds like a lot of whining to me. The field of marble collecting is strong, a LOT of people are having fun, kids are playing the game again and marbles are beautiful. Get over it! David P.S. It would be so much easier to be understanding and show kindness if the wailing weren't so acerbic.

Don't you just love those RR postcards. I have something like 25 different ones. I think people are going to have difficulty saying anything about this marble. Without your intro. info. re. it I'd have figured it to be a Vacor interloper from the late 1980s. You sure you aren't putting us on and did some trick photography and snuck this one into the postcard? David

Sometimes I think you just have to let go and pass on IDing; just accept the marble for what it is, Often in IDing when we've established provenance we stop and don't go beyond the actual fact of its derivation. Like completely overlooking the marble's beauty and multiple possibilities from continued viewing.....David -
There are miniture croquet sets and then there are wooden nickels. Even if it is for real I just can't give much credence to a wooden marble. Like, huh? David

Just like any antique and collectible area/arena it is necessary to stay on top of it all the time. Disillusionment comes from rip offs but they are often a minor and marginal aspect of the collecting field. If you truly love marbles these distractions shouldn't deter you. I do believe in proactively fighting back and exposing fraud. Unfortunately too many newbies in a whole host of collectibles fields get gored right out of the gate. Life can suck but I sure ain't letting it get in the way of my passion for marbles. David

Antique Marbles: Stone, Bennington, China, . . .
david Chamberlain replied to Steph's topic in Archives
This Thread has got quite a way along but Splattman's initial post with the marble identified as a Jasper(Green and White) I really think is a Lined Crockery and it will often have green with blue on white swirling about. An especially rare one would have some pink. Larry Castle was always on the lookout for these. So, I think we've got clay here not stone unless 'Jasper' has taken on a newer meaning then I haven't heard about. David -
Bubba's got it down! I had and still have that "Ice Blue" one from when I was a kid and have picked up a few more along the way. 3/4 I believe. Peltier. No a particularly demonstrative marble but it has history with me. David

That just goes to show you how much I know about eBay scoring. I was thinking 97.whatever had to be at least A+. Duh! I'm glad in a way that I've managed to struggle along to this point without hardly an overture to eBay. David

I think what you have there is a different animal. David -
Hi Craig, Love that blue. Just mentioned you at Kevin's Board while providing Jenny with a show brief for Kansas City and what not to miss while in the area. John Mc had already given her the specifics about your two show plan and suggested that she also get over to see Larry & Cathy's state-of-the-art set-up at the Toy & Minature Mus. David

Hey Duffy, Assuming you are disappointed and do wind up with a common rubber ball I just couldn't let this thread go down unanswered leaving rubber balls(Super Balls/High Bounce) in such a derogatory light. I have sort of an advanced collection of Super Balls and would be more than willing to send you a couple outstanding examples including one that I got from Brian Estepp that's well nigh onto being a pee wee. A pee wee in a super ball is rare.....believe me. David
