Reproductions And The Damage They Can Do??
machinemades replied to lstmmrbls's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Just because Christensen, Alley, Champion, Cairo, Heaton, Ravenswood, Vitro and Peltier produced at some time Flame type marbles, does that mean no one else can produce marbles with a flame pattern? My question is a bit tongue in cheek, but I am not with the opinion that new flame marbles are any threat to marble collecting hobby. There may be couple blue, red white marbles that might look like a Christensen, but with a little bit of attention I am sure they can be separeted from Christensens. I do not agree the new modern marbles are any threat to collecting. In 80 to 100 years they will be antique and Christensens, Peltiers and Akros etc. will be early machinemades. It will be up to serious collectors, books and expert appraisers to value these items. Today the new marbles serve for newcomers to enter the hobby as an affordable way of introduction, which will serve to move to later serious collecting arena. There will be problems along the way. People will be fooled, waist money, but who in the hobby hasn't? If i make a wrong purchase and quit the hobby because of that, I would have not lasted very long for another reason any way. Collectors come in and go all the time. Some will stick, be a long term collector and become an asset to the hobby one way or another. I am all for discussing these issues and recommend all collectors to serve the hobby at one point rather than be always on the hunt, add better marbles into the collection, and make money along the way. -
The Elements Of A Good Marble Show
machinemades replied to IowaMarble's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Chad, I love going shows for many reasons. first and common favorite is seeing friends of course. Finding good marbles comes second. I specially like Seattle and Vegas shows because Dani, Ernie and Lee have the hospitality rooms open for socializing. I always find top shelf marbles with those guys too. Seeing private collections, selling some marbles, Iowa's banquet, Canton's lively Thursday night room trading, late night partying with marbles all around and the show itself. I always have a table on shows. I enjoy that aspect also. Another important reason I like to go to shows is that it is a total disconnection from the real world. It is a short vacation that you rest your brain real good. The crowd of the shows also bring collectors that you would otherwise never meet because they are not on the internet and somewhat disconnected. New collectors are fun to interact as well as seasoned ones. Sami -
Reproductions And The Damage They Can Do??
machinemades replied to lstmmrbls's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
I look at contemporary marbles as a separate classification in marble collecting. To me there are 1-antique handmade marbles (that could also be sub categorized into large and small), 2- machinemades (1915-1970), 3- modern machinemades (1970- today), 4- handmade contemporary. I do not believe these subcategories pose a threat to each other in terms of value or even the existence of the category. Rare machinemades will always hold their value and the collectors will not switch to jabo just because they are cheaper and resemble the old ones. I can speak only for myself but have a feeling I might have few that will think the same way. Sami -
No Paul, the ride was actually great with the warm sun hitting me on the side. Going to Vegas?

I also agree with Galen that he should be able to express his opinion doesn't matter if it is a repeat. New collectors coming into the hobby on a daly basis and we can't expect them to read posts form previous years. I see topics that were discussed years ago come back, because new posters did not go back and read everything in the archives. Sami

My condolences to his family. Sami

Guess I Need To Recheck My Marbles
machinemades replied to mon's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
I have been calling these red transparent based Peltier NLRs as "Cherry Float", originating from the name "Rootbeer Float". I have called blue examples as "Blueberry Float". I haven't come up a name for the green ones, but thinking of "Kiwi Float" . Sami -

Interesting Ca Marble On The Bay
machinemades replied to skycollect's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
That marble is almost a crossroad between a Striped Transparent and a Guinea. Nice marble. -
I am in for help in any way I can for a book. I also agree the names help in identifying harder to find, special marbles. Rare, early Peltiers are definitely a good candidate for names, specially the sleepers. The name brings in the attention and the value the marble deserves, also a good hunting target for newer collectors with the knowledge of what to look for. Gorgeous examples of hard to find Peltiers there Chuck! Sami

Why not sixties or seventies? Why does it have to go that far back. I had similar marbles when I was growing up. Sami

I'll be there with family this time. Looking forward to see everyone. Sami

Galen is right with a minor detail defference of true Burnt Christmas Tree has green ribbons sit on top of burnt brown ribbons making a whole different marble than this example. Same principal goes to Burnt Rebel where black ribbons sit on top of burnt brown ribbons. Sami

Wet mint probably means no pocketware whatsoever on an old marble. A marble can be mint with a little pocketware or scratching around a jar, loosing a little bit of that as made shiny surface. Sami

Pelt Superman Or Vacor ?? Or Something Else ??
machinemades replied to ter215's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Obviously the buyer was insecure about the purchase and didn't see the difference between an old Pelt and a new Vacor. I would not worry about the return. Satisfaction is very important on expensive marble purchases. Relisting is only couple clicks away. Sami
